Ok, I'm bored at work and was thinking about what interesting thread that will come out Friday and I thought why not start it now.

So here goes...

Last night my bf and I attended Maximillion Keene's concert. If anyone has attended his concerts you know it is packed. While at the concert, some attendees had these Godforsaken annoying gestures. I don't mean the usual Woot and such like gestures but some really ridiculous ones. Max could hardly be heard because of these gestures and some were speaking in voice. In the 2 1/2 years I have been in sl I have never muted so many people at one time.

So mine is, don't you just hate when people talk in "voice" and overuse gestures while you are attending a concert or such like function.

Feel free to express your own don't you just hate...

I turn the volume down on everything except music at live music.

but I started this as playing live music you don't want all that noice re streaming into your mix.

also the typ animation ;)
OFF

Max's shows are great I popped in for a bit to hear him and Mimi.

My rant would be the more than 3 line chat gesters the full page of acis wolfs and such, cant read chat or converse at all, nor can the musician read whats going on

Those bloody typed pictures or whatever they're called. They are evil. In Herzog's Utopian Second Life, anyone daring to unleash one of those things would receive a minor electric shock through their keyboard. Further transgressions would result in shocks of increasing potency, with the fifth such transgression zapping the perpetrator unconscious and exploding their PC.

I hate . . . well I was going to say "overuse" but I hate gestures. Why the heck are you using voice when at a live music concert? I know some use voice, but I have only been to one (it didn't really work), and Maximillion Keene does not use "Voice" but a stream. Simple click of the button to transition from voice to not voice (admittedly something to do before going to a packed Sim). And if you hate when people talk in "voice" then you do not have it on to talk, so again, why the heck are you a t a live music concert with voice activated?

Here's something peculiar. I had started getting to know a DJ. You would think he would be sensitive to this problem, right? Being someone who played music for a living.

He was one of the worst offenders. In fact, he would even do this when we were hanging out at his place or mine, listening to music, for cripes sake. It was one of those things which I realized was going to be a "make or break" issue for me (well, amongst other things) in getting to know him. I could not see telling him to STOP doing it, you know? And yet, I knew I could NOT deal with being around someone who thought this was cute behavior.

It didn't last long, not because of that little thing, it was other things which made it difficult to get us together but, I'm thankful because I think that annoying habit would have been the first big argument between us!

It's really up to venue owners to try to regulate these things.

My guess is that most people who use their ascii spam gestures neither intend to spam, nor are they particularly attached to using those gestures. I think most people who use them saw someone else using one, copied it, and now it's become a habit (particularly as filler when one can't think of something else to say).

I would therefore guess that most people, when asked politely by venue owners, would probably probably refrain from using their ascii spam gestures, and not be upset by the request at all.

(I too keep the gesture sounds turned off. My enjoyment of Second Life increased immensely when I discovered that I could turn off gesture and environmental sounds. I wonder how many people are like me and keep gesture sounds turned off- a lot of people using gestures with text and sound probably don't realize that their gesture text, without the sound, looks like a complete non-sequitor to a resident like me.)

How do you turn off gesture sound?

I never ever again want to hear "yay" or "howlz" or . . . .

of course I meow and purr. I'm a gesture spammer. Nevermind.

You've just given me another idea for a game to play...go to a club and play "Mute the Moron"..a little bit like bash the mole but you get to mute the gesture spammers.

I'm curious how exciting it is to sit behind a keyboard periodically pressing keys to launch gestures. I don't get it? Most of the time there's no chat, just gestures. Why? and they're not bots that I encounter either.

Yeah, Max has a pretty huge following. Most of the gesture spam is his groupies at that. It's like the screaming at a Beatles concert. Some people are there for the experience, not the music. (=_=)

That said... Voice chat!?!?! (O_O) Most of the time, the club or parcel owner is at the concert. Maybe someone should IM the owner or Max and request to have voice chat temporarily shut off for the event. It makes no sense for it to be on, considering how "loud" voice chat is capable of being. (>_<;)

Heh... I've made it a game a few times to get Max to laugh in the middle of a song though... I've succeeded a few times. He's a really cool performer. (^_^)y

Look on your media controls tab in the lower-right corner. The little round button on the far right, with an up-arrow ^ on it. Click that. Now, you see a list of volume control sliders for different types of sounds, as well as little speaker icons down the right hand side.

Now, don't mess with your volume-control sliders, because you don't have to; simply click the speaker icon for each type of sound you DON'T want to hear right now. Click it again to un-mute. You will see a little red "no" icon appear next to it to indicate whether it is muted.

It is better to mute /unmute than have to remember where you had your various volume settings set at.

I was at a concert a while ago and I had to feel sorry for this woman - at the end of a song she tried to do the polite thing of putting a / in front of "thankyou" so the typing sound didn't disturb, but it unfortunately set off a huge long Gorean speech about how she thanked her master for acknowledging her existence, and how she was not worthy or something, and it went on, and on, and on for about 5 minutes.

If avatars could blush ...

From the top of your screen:

Edit -> Preferences -> Audio & Video

At the top of this screen, you'll see some choices under the heading "Volume."

"Sounds" includes gesture sounds. You can turn this slider all the way down.

"Ambient" is environmental sounds (like the omnipresent light wind). I turn this one down.

"UI" is things like the telport sounds, and the ding when someone new IMs or when you buy something. I think it's a good idea to leave this one turned up.

Then "Music," "Media," and "Voice" are probably self-explanatory.

Come to think of it, one of the main offenders was one of his groupies. She told me to turn my volume down, so my polite response was...... no I am just going to mute you. Have a quality day

I've set off embarrasing gestures before (not that one, heh). I was at an event once where I tried to use that / method and launched a five minute song and dance number. Oops. I was so . . . .well I quickly hit the giant X. Once they start, they don't stop unless you leave.

Don't you just hate ...

... walking around bald for 5 minutes after a TP?
... tp requests when you log in without so much as a hello?
... the phrase "give some linden loving"?
... bling?
... raspberry beer?
... people who leave 3 squares of tp on the roll?
... waking up and getting ready for work because you forgot it was Saturday?
... rope burns on the inside of your thigh?
... getting acetone on a hangnail?
... that 5 o'clock shadow looks sexy but feels like a wire brush?
... tier fees?

I have voice routed through my headset, and music through my speakers so i am rarely bothered by people's impolite use of voice. I only wear the headset when I'm using voice myself.

Saves the trouble of changing my preferences to enable/disable voice all the time. I didn't know about the new trick of muting by clicking on the name next to the volume slider.

As a musician I like to keep my eye on Chat and interact with my audience. What they say disappears so quick with all those gestures that fill the chat screen. I don't hammer on the users too much as many are great supporters but it would be a lot easier to keep up if they didn't constantly fill the screen

I was at that show last night. I think I ended up muting close to 15 idiots. Two tiny furries who thought it was funny to shout "dragon penis", along with sound, were the first to meet the mute button.

Not really. All you have to do is turn off voice, turn down (or off) sounds, and all you hear is your UI, the atmosphere, and the music.

I hardly hear the gesture sounds, it's the friggin chat spam that bothers me. Like Charles pointed out, it can make keeping up with chat near impossible. I just don't see the point of it.. Other than being a nuisance.
