*note my tounge is firmly planted in my cheek*
Reading M.Linden's blog on his 2 month tenure and one statement caught my eye:
1. Second Life users are more mainstream than many assume. It’s not just tech-savvy early adopters or gamers. It’s a much broader cross-section of society with a median age in the early 30’s and nearly half the time spent in world is by women.
Err.. so he's saying women can't be tech savvy early adopters or gamers? I know i'm fairly new to SL, but I've been playing on line games since the mid 90's and build my own computers! Women can be Geeks too!!!!111!

I can assure you, women can definitely be techies and geeks!
But I seriously doubt the LL staff can make a realistic measure of what percentage of Players really are males and which really are females. They can possibly record the trend in gender preferences at sign-up, but that means nothing. And without valid identity verification, what is to prevent a male who is signing up to make a female alt from stating on their sign-up form that they are female in RL, and using a fake female "Real Name"? If they are not signing up for Premium, there is no credit card or other data to validate that name with. And a lot of real names are gender ambiguous. I've met both men and women who shared my given name.
*laughs*
Roughly 1/3 of my alts are males. Does that mean my Player is statistically only 2/3 of a woman?

The tech and gaming sectors are dominated by men. I'm not endorsing that, that's just how it is. Second Life has a much higher percentage of women involved in it than a lot f gaming communities (even if you discount the reported percentages). Look at the FPS gamers, for example. I don't have any studies to back this up, but I'd bet money that a HUGE percentage of the players are male.
He wasn't knocking womens' tech abilities, he was noting that we have a much more representative cross-section of the general public than a lot of platforms do.
lol - Mark Whatshisname said we were marginalized outsiders, now M Linden says we are mainstream. Sheesh, guys! Don't you have staff meetings or something where you can get your danged stories straight?

parc did a survey about avatar's age and gender: here are the results:

As to whether SLers are mainstream, who cares? That is the kind of labeling I despise cause it creates an idea of normal.

Out of the total *potential* users worldwide (hundreds of thousands? millions?), we have 40-50K that log on daily.
I think that's pretty telling as to how mainstream we are. We aren't. I think that's fairly cool.

IMO most of the best content creators and scripters I have met or who's work I happen to come across in SL appear to be women, well at least they have female avs.

I blanked on the name when i did the post. Mitch Kapor gave a keynote address at SL5B where he said that SL was made up of a bunch of marginalized outsiders. He said a lot of other, more interesting things as well, but that remark caught a bunch of flak. They are two different people.
