Both My Parents were computer litertate as necessitated by their jobs, but neither would care to spend much time behind one away from work.

*Shame on you to those ragging on their parents for notbeing as tech savvy as you are. Show a little respect, will ya?*

My mom would love SL if she gave it a chance, my dad's business would really benifit if he had a presence in world. BUUUUUT my dad is a total luddite, and my mom is still wierded out by the idea of 3D environments. Nevermind that she'd make a killing by making really incredible prefabs, she really does incredible work with houses in RL. As it is, it's just me and the hub that are online, and we really don't interact much in world.

I am at the other end of the age bracket too, "old as sin". I look at it the other way around, there is no way in hell I would bring my daughter in here. For all of the laughs and giggles in this thread, take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask the question "how did I get here". We invented sex and dirty jokes way before most of you were born. Yes your parents did it and probably still do more often than you.

I am not being critical here just trying to shed some light. Just because we get older our brains dont die, I still act like a teenager. Well some don't anyway, my Mother is in a world of her own now. She can't remember what was said 30-seconds ago but still knows what sex is and yes she does...... Look what you have to look forward to. Believe me, I have an evil, wicked mind. chuckles.... Not really, but I must admit it is fun to do the things in sl that would have put us in jail IRL when we were younger. I am a sweet, innocent submissive in sl and I can still rock your socks and make your heart stand still with one soft gentle kiss. ;)

Your Mom or Dad being in Second Life and you knowing about it is one thing.

Not knowing about it is another.

Finding out you just accidentally cybered one of your parents .. Crisis.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

When my mother came to visit a couple of months ago, I showed her SL. She retired at the end of last year and is looking for various things to do with her time - especially whent the weather is bad and she cannot be out in the garden. She was totally thrilled with SL, though her husband sees it the same as mine - they both think we are basically playing dress up in some strange world.

In any case, we got her set up with an account while she was here. I helped her with some basic setup so that she did not scream 'noob' look. Her interests are a lot different from mine, so she does not hang with me inworld, but will IM me with questions when she has them. We sometimes get together so that I can show her a bit more here - I take it slow because her previous computer experience really just consisted of AOL chat rooms and email. She is a bit slow on learning some stuff, but overall she is picking things up and having a blast.

And I know that she loves it because she tells me a lot. I think it is a great experience for her and I am really glad I got her involved.

My mom is 57 and pretty much computer illiterate (although she can programme the VCR and DVD recorder just fine!)-but I set up an account for her about a year ago, and she sometimes comes for a short peek on line on one of my computers while I take the laptop, so I can guide her around. Other than that, I have hijacked her avatar as my male alt and just do a quick revert to HER female avatar when she needs it-so there's this goth guy that sometimes turns into a short fat (sorry, mom!*) woman! :D
I think she finds all the options too overwhelming, and she would never venture into SL on her own. But she likes the idea of it in general.

My dad tinkers with motorbikes. He still thinks the monitor is the computer. He wouldn't go near one.

*No really, she wanted her avatar to look just like her and she is short and "fat", and I'm just quoting her on that!

I love playing with family

I play SL with not only my sister, brother and my husband and my sisters's partner. We have the best times laughing at stuff and exploring. I am so glad we can play together. I think it has brought all of us a lot closer and it makes for a great sex life in RL. LOL By the way we are between 30-55 yrs old.

I tried to give my mother a computer and she didn't want to have anything to do with it, even after I told how the family could send her email and photos. :(

In a frightening twist, in a few short years I'll *be* the parent on the grid - I sorta am now, but there's that main grid / teen grid separation currently.

I don't supervise more than I need to - but from that small amount I can pretty much say that the teens do alright, it's a good environment; though sometimes I do hear lots of explosions in the background. :)

Relatively speaking, I probably am a Luddite - I fall on the 'non-texting' side of the mobile device divide. Why text when you can talk? Though it's not like I'm in classroom or supervised situations any more.

Nup. My mother's likely convinced that computers are satanic outlets that will unleash evil into her home. This is a good thing, since I feel the same way about her, actually.

Just 'cause they spawned you doesn't mean you gotta be friends with 'em. ^^

Trying to explain why *they* cybered *you* is what I'd love to hear ;)
