is your mother in-world?

i'm 41 and my mother is pretty hip for a person in her age bracket. (70-something)
i want to open her to SL, but fear that she will be ultra-overwhelmed at the whole Sl world.

i'm thinking to set her account up when i visit next time, and so she can just log in and chat.

no, this isn't a way to avoid personal communication via phone talks. it's a way for us to be closer and hang out more.

what's your story?

My mother passed away before I discovered SL, but I think this is a very sweet idea. Mine would not have been able to navigate it, having pretty severe essential tremor. Besides it would creep me out a little if she chose some kind of barbie-doll avatar. I know there are a few 70+ residents, so it's worth a shot.

I am trying to get a close lady friend to try it, thinking this would give us more time to visit also, but she's a bit of a Luddite.

do it! better yet, sit with her and the two of you can set her up together... get her acclimated, show her some cool places. Is there some place in the world she's wanted to visit? Bet there's a version of it here. And for the two of you to be able to hang out here.. you can't pass up the opportunity. Worst that happens is you go back to using the phone :-)

My mom's past being able to do this.. 91 and a brain riddled with Alzheimer's ... but i know she would have LOVED sl

my mom passed away many years ago, before we even had personal computers in our daily lives

I like to think that if she were alive today she would love this stuff

oh man. that's what i'm afraid of. so i'm trying to enjoy the moment now.
she has a 'ruley' husband now, and this could be a small liberating thing for her, in her (what's left of) private life. thank you.

my mom is 71 and even alert and healthy but can't hardly run a remote to the tv, program a vcr, is easily annoyed and frustrated with any electronics's....so I would never introduce her to sl.

However if you think yer mom can go for it. help her get started

LOL! Mine's 61 and cant even figure out how to use Google. To her the internet is full of sick, demented, perverts.... cuz thats what the media tells her.

My dad bought her a nice digital camera for her 60th BDay. She never read the book, has no idea how to use it, and any pictures she's taken still remain on the flash card because she doesnt understand how to take them off, regardless of how many times I've shown her.

Your Mom or Dad being in Second Life and you knowing about it is one thing.

Not knowing about it is another.

Finding out you just accidentally cybered one of your parents .. Crisis.

not that I do anything to be embarassed about, but I dunno if I'd be more terrified to run into my mom in world, or to run into one of my students in world.

I think it would be cool to run into someone I know in RL in SL

my sis in law saw it on csi and wanted to try but did not go beyond the start, she said it just looked boring (CSI islands thing)
I told her there is soooo much more and if she decides to give it another try call me LOL

/me has seen Frogg Marlowe's mother at his shows, it's wonderful she gets to see her son perform, and funny when he modifies his jokes and language because she's around! ;)

Mine can't email, and needs us to place her grocery orders for her... She's also very straight, no worries about cybering with her...OMG

/me giggles, from the other sub/slave/pet thread, wouldn't it be horribly funny if someone found out their dom/me was their parent? Or vice-versa, that they were domming their parent?

My wife and I are on the other end... our daughter was in SL first. It did not surprise her that we were curious, but I think it freaked her out a little when we stayed. :) She is grown, with a family of her own, and away from us. It is cool getting to see her in world and makes up a little for the distance now.

My mum is 68, and she hasn't even figured out how to switch a computer on yet. In any case even if she was computer-literate, I don't think I'd want to introduce her to a world where one of the first things she's likely to encounter on Help Island is some guy with a big newbie dick sticking in her face. Or some guy coming up to her young-looking avatar and saying "Hey doll, wanna f***?"

And my dad's reaction, when I mentioned it to him, was "Why don't you get a First Life instead?" Gee, thanks Dad.

I'm a "Mom" and haven't even considered asking my 37-year old son to try SL. It's much too slow for him! He's still playing WoW, a game I introduced him to, but abandoned a long time ago. :/ I haven't even thought of trying my daughter-in-law until now, maybe she could the slow and easy pace.

Ask your mom - whether or not she can handle it from a technical perspective varies from person to person. But it can't hurt to try.

You too, eh? :)

My Dad still thinks computers are a passing fad and totally unecessary.

Hmm gawnd I can imagine the fun at trying to keep my alts activities secret, without all the "is this your new GF" questions, or setting me up with half the population of SL that look female :)
"wHy can't I just TP in anytime? You need to clean these prims up, what is that halfbuild destructo ray, either finish it or put away in your inventory, better yet just give me edit rights and I will clean up the fortress for you, I'll add some curtains too, why have you hidden the virtual bathroom, is it that bad?
There is a person that keeps using your skybox to engage in naughty stuff with those scantly clad women & catgirls, you should ban him."

That's the natural reaction - but I'll always regret one time when I was to receive an award in RL that was very special to me, I wouldn't let my mother attend because I knew the jokes and the banter were going to be raunchy. She was a little hurt at this and quietly reminded me, "I live in this world too."

I think it's a great idea!

Regarding the worry about a Barbie doll avatar, one of the freebie stores (I think it was Fabulously Free In Second Life, in Talisman) has a female senior citizen avatar for 0L. If your mum doesn't mind looking granny-ish (because hey, she might want to be young and gorgeous again; you never know!) then that might be an idea :)

I think it's a great idea too! ;)

Both my parents passed away in the last 3 years, but neither one of them would have been the least interested in SL. My dad couldn't even tolorate answering machines lol nevermind computers. My mom was an artist.....her passions in life had nothing to do with technology.

But....I do have an aunt (my dad's sister) who is actually the one who turned me on to PC gaming years ago. She is 70 now....and about as hip and sharp as ever. I've told her about SL and she was delighted by the concept but her computer wouldn't support it. If I had more real time with her I'm sure I could easily get her set up in SL......but geographically it's tough because we're not close. She's a busy lady anyway....but I know for a fact she'd absolutely love SL. :D So...I'd say if you think your mom would dig it....get her in.....let her decide if it's worth the fuss of learning all the navigation and stuff. I bet you would really have a blast. I wish some of my other family and friends that live far away would get into SL....*sigh* I guess I'm the only genuine nerd among my loved ones, hehe. :o
