90% of builders don't know how to make proper stairs. You have to design around the comfortable (and capable) height an avatar can move over. Test your work...that's all I have to say. we DO know how to build...and our home that once we could navigate easily...now we cant. The stair height has changed..its nothing to do with a lack of building skills _____________________

I'm so glad to know this is not me... My AV has been stumbling on stairs all over the place lately! It's the update!
I just thought she was getting into the Jameson's behind my back.. _____________________

I'm of two minds on the new climbing behavior. On the one hand, railings now work to keep avatars from falling off balconies, which is good. On the other hand, steep staircases don't work, nor do steep ramps, or ladders, which is pretty annoying. Chosen, do you mean really low banisters, at knee height? And, I didn't notice anything in the Havok postings about not being able to climb really steep ramps, just stairs. Did I miss something? . |

For people who want working ladders, note that my friend Gypsy Paz sells ladders that work by a poseball that is moved in script
![]() I use ramps in my store; I don't like stairs in SL, the bump-bump movement over them feels weird. _____________________

/me looks at the railings she put on her porch ( one small cylindrical prim at hip height, which always worked), and the unbelievably steep mountain behind her house (which she can still climb), and is puzzled. Chosen, do you mean really low banisters, at knee height? Sorry, I'll clarify. What I meant was a railing made out of a single cube, extending from floor level to waste height. It used to be that if you were to walk into one of those, you could pretty easily end up climbing over it. But now, any vertical, or near-vertical, obstacle that is taller than knee height is unclimbable. An object not located substantially above the floor, such as your cylindrical banister, would always have been an unclimbable obstacle. Building railings out of single cubes is common, since it saves on prims. Just slap an alpha texture on it, and you've got pickets, or ironwork, chain link, or whatever you want. And, I didn't notice anything in the Havok postings about not being able to climb really steep ramps, just stairs. Did I miss something? . There's nothing directly in the notes about ramps, no. But when I read the note about stairs, I put two and two together, and figured that if a ramp were made steep enough, it too would become unclimbable. When I logged in to test, I found I was right. Try it yourself; you'll see. By my experiments, the cutoff seems to be about 15 degrees. At that angle, the av will slowly ascend. Any steeper, and it kind of just hops up to about knee height, and then falls back down. For people who want working ladders, note that my friend Gypsy Paz sells ladders that work by a poseball that is moved in script ![]() Thanks, Johan. That's one solution. I'm not really sure I like the idea of the user having to click on the ladder deliberately in order to use it. I'd rather he or she just be able to walk right up it. I think that's a lot more intuitive. But I guess if someone is used to SL, poseballs are so commonplace, it's not much of a stretch. Still, I'd rather just be able to walk, I think. _____________________

Thanks, Chosen, most educational as always
![]() I hadn't thot about H4 making it possible to use decorative walls now as bannisters instead of the simple rails ... that's actually nice. And yes, I will try the steep walk; finally use that protractor that's been sitting around in inventory since my first visit to Yadni's! . |

Of course, if you've got a tiny av, you're still screwed on most stairs.

Or much of anything else. And you're being kind at 90%. What does this even mean? I'm only 10% kind? I'm 90% kind? _____________________

What does this even mean? I'm only 10% kind? I'm 90% kind? That means that even estimating 90% is being generous. _____________________

we DO know how to build...and our home that once we could navigate easily...now we cant. The stair height has changed..its nothing to do with a lack of building skills Firstly, who is this 'we'? If you all of you know how to build stairs properly, then how come I bump bump bump bump...I made it up one step...bump bump bump bump....there's the second step. If like you said you all know how to build...then that wouldn't happen. And to clarify, I said 90% of builders don't know how to make 'stairs.' Stairs. I didn't say you didn't know how to build. It does have something to do with a lack of building skill if you can't create a working set of stairs. I'm not being an ass, I'm just being honest. I'm not saying [you] don't know how to build at all, I mean [you] lack the skill to make operational stairs. (collective [you]). Don't take this personally. I'm not talking about any one in particular. If you have smooth, working stairs...then you are in the minority. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people put tight, steep, spirallying staircases in their home...man oh man. ![]() _____________________

That means that even estimating 90% is being generous. Ah, the wording was strange. It sounded like an insult. I get it. Thanks. _____________________
