you drink this early in the morning?…

actually the maximum step height for a avatar as changed, they can't do big steps now. I had to jump all the way up a 30 meter high staircase yesterday

Welcome to my world. (=_=) I've never been able to climb the stairs at the hangout properly. Now the problem has even extended to the welcome areas. (>_<;)

In time, people will realize this and start converting their stairs to invisible ramps with phantom steps. (^_^)

OMG so alot of store owners need to change the height of their steps then. Dollyrock was one I remember for sure, I thought about sending her an IM but I figured it was some SL fluke.

It is an SL fluke. Just an intentional one. Try using a ladder to get out of a pool now :(

I can only guess at something like 0.5 to 0.75, I could do a test.

90% of builders don't know how to make proper stairs. You have to design around the comfortable (and capable) height an avatar can move over.

Test your work...that's all I have to say.

I've been shopping at Dollyrock since almost day 1 so I know I've had no problems in the past.

Q: Why can I not climb up stairs that I could climb up before?

A: The new simulator uses a more realistic avatar climbing model. It uses a location at about the standard height knee point as the height of barrier that is considered to be a “wall” for avatar stair climbing behavior. If stairs are too tall, the avatar will not be able to climb them.

So know all we need to do is find the document that defines the standard knee height :p

Seems like a ramp would be more universally accessible and less prone to AV height problems. Much easier on prims as well. They just don't look near as nice as a set of stairs.

Sculpty stairs maybe? I could make a flight of steps that would be a single prim. When you walked up it it would be like a ramp, only you would most likely be walking in the air just above the steps. Texturing it might be a pain but like anything, the later textures would be based on the first and go pretty quickly.

Anyway. Just another idea to add to my collection of things I'll never get done. :o

It changes depending on AV height. "Standard knee height" to me means where the knee is if you don't have an animation twisting you into some wierd contortion.

Child avatars have been jumping up stairs for ages, I'm asuming that the kneehight is still relative to total hight.
I'm not sure what the max slope for ladders is but I regulary walk up 45 degree slopes that are 10 meter high so slopes don't use the kneehight rule.

just tested it 0.625 works, 0.65 doesn't.

Build your stairs how you see fit--then use an invisible ramp in the same place as the stairs...

This works wonders.

What Imnotgoing said. People shouldn't need to rebuild their steps or replace them with ramps, just lay an invisible ramp over the top of them. I've been doing that forever even though my steps are short enough, just because I hate the stupid "bump, bump, bump" sound.

edit: Michael had his coffee before me this morning, apparently.

I only use ramps, stairs are too many prims :)

Just a lil bit kinda sorta off topic but...

Um....how do you jump? I've seen avs jumping around but never quite figured out how to do it myself.

or you can tap "e" once. If you want to fly, you hold 'e' and it takes you up, up and away!

If you use w,a,s,d to walk around, 'e' is very convenient.

Or much of anything else. And you're being kind at 90%.

I'm of two minds on the new climbing behavior. On the one hand, railings now work to keep avatars from falling off balconies, which is good. On the other hand, steep staircases don't work, nor do steep ramps, or ladders, which is pretty annoying.

It used to be that if there were even the slightest degree of slope to a surface, an avatar would be able to climb it, which, among other things, allowed for the creation of convincing ladders. For vertical ladders, all you had to do was put an invisible ramp slightly in front, and the avatar would appear to climb the ladder as it walked up the ramp.

You can't do that sort of thing anymore. That bothers me. But I'm not sure it's worth giving up working railings to go back to it. It's hard to decide which is more important.

Perhaps a better solution would be to make "climbability", or whatever you want to call it, a property of objects. Turn it on, and the avatar is able to ascend the vertical slope of the object, no matter how steep, just like before. Turn it off, and the newer, more realistic, knee height rule applies.

Thoughts?
