GIMP for me. Can't see paying a 100 USD (or much much more) when GIMP will do it all for SL. Paint.net does work too but I invested a year learning GIMP so I use it most of the time. One feature in Paint.net that I've never seen in another program is the portrait soften filter........makes for a very nice "portrait" effect. So I guess I use both.

I 'use' PS2/3 as a user and a developer (adobe plugin development + the odd scripting necessities) on both mac & pc.
I'm using the complete adobe creative suite, but mostly for development/testing of stuff only. _____________________

I've been using Photoshop since version 2.5, so I can't see using anything else! I use Illustrator for vector-y things.

Photoshop CS is very expensive though. Does Photoshop Elements have enough stuff for clothes, etc?? I've got quite an old copy of Paint Shop Pro - would that do the trick?

Corel PhotoPaint will work for SL purposes.
The Serif paint program PhotoPlus works for SL. It's cheap, though not as cheap as GIMP. Photoshop is exceedingly powerful but the interface leaves me cold. _____________________

I use Photoshop for most graphics, use PSP for creating alpha textures, seems to work better for me.

for sl work, i use photoshop almost exclusively. textures, box artwork, signs, photography, etc. and even though i've been using it for well over ten years and i'm quite comfortable with it, i probably don't even touch 1/4 of the features.

I've got CS2 and I open it, look at it, curse that the family artistic gene skipped a generation with me (my excuse anyway) and close it again. For some reason I can use Ulead with success but of course no layers.

QFT! I get all excited when I find something new in Photoshop, although I'm sure there's plenty. You tend to do the same thing all the time, and don't know about all of the wonderful things the program can do! |

I use Graphic Converter. Probably not too many can say that.
![]() Granted, it's not ideal for working with clothes, and I'll probably end up getting something else if I ever want to do more clothing work, but for my tiny needs now, it's just fine. It can save tgas, and it can do alpha transparencies, and that's all I need. In fact, from what I've seen, it looks like it does alpha channels a lot easier than Photoshop. I'd originally assumed I couldn't do alphas without any complicated software -- all the tutorials I'd seen were certainly complicated enough and went on about layers that GC doesn't seem to have. So I asked a graphic artist friend to do one for me; turns out he hadn't done them before, and asked someone else over to walk him through it. While they were chatting, I got curious and opened up my five-zillion-year-old version of GC, looked around a bit, and lo and behold, there under the menu was "Make Alpha Channel From Selection". I had my first successful alpha texture uploaded while the other two were still fussing with Photoshop layers. *g* All hail shareware! |

No one ever mentions Corel PhotoPaint, which I like, and which works just fine for Second Life. Photopaint is not the Painter program referred to above, Painter is the one with the cool natural brushes, while Photopaint is the boring normal bitmap paint program, that used to be serious competition for Photoshop but apparently Corel gave up on that and decided to be a good hobbyist and light professional program and leave the big league graphics suite market to Adobe.
No one ever mentions the Serif program PhotoPlus, which also has layers and make TGA files with transparency. Version 6 is free, version 8 is ten bucks. The free version will make a PNG with transparency and the transparency works when you import into SL. I just verified this, but not extensively. Version 6 is pretty simple, so if the extreme complexity of Photoshop makes your head hurt, and GIMP is baffling, you might want to try this one. Note when I say the transparency works, it may have a white fringe, and the way it does transparency is unlikely to satisfy a professional. But it's free and you can uninstall it if you don't like it. The newest version, X2 , is a lot fancier and only 80 bucks. The site http://www.freeserifsoftware.com has all the free Serif stuff. It's all pretty neat stuff for free. It has the paint program, a desktop publisher, a web page editor, a vector drawing program, and a 3D effects program, all for free. They are all introductory programs designed to get you to like the Serif way of doing things so you'll buy the fancier programs. _____________________
