I believe it was Aristotle who argued that "wisdom comes alone through suffering".

It is often wrong translated or interpreted. He meant cognition, sense - not literally wisdom and not only through suffering - basicly he meant experience in general. To shrink his extraordinaire large and multicontextural work to an essential: it was the link between knowledge and joy which gave him the ability to be this athlet of thinking in his time and also the knowledge, that he is only a link between former and later generations of thinkers.

Could be seen as wisdom that he knew that he will be not the first, nor the last thinker on globe, but one in the middle - so to speak.

And suffering is not in any case the key to wisdom - it can lead into agression and madness also, or into self-abandonment, permanent depression, etc.

As ever in life: depends...

Yeah, it really is. Now if I can shrink the "extraordinaire large and multicontextural POST to an essential" I might grasp what Whynochee is on about.
All I can say is, in best Eartha Kitt voice, Ohhhhh those Turks!" Errr Greeks, I mean.
Just teasing Wyn. I learnt a lot then. I put it down to all that Hemlock they used to swig back. And all that marathon running.
Jig goes off with goggly eyes and kinda stunned expression.

PolyKontexturalist, Wyn?

Which goes to show: You should never rely on translations to provide you with the sense that the original author wanted to communicate; learn the language and read the source.

Pep (This is why you should not trust the Bible and why sermons are usually extremely boring. ;) )

Yeah. Bunch a'Hippies.
"Get outta my way!" she says sweeping aside a bearded cove and a kinda tubby rascally type. As she hightails it to her Lexus.
"No, I don' wanna be saved, thank you very much!"
Peep peeep from her automatic door lock.
"Okay, okay gimme the pamphlet... what's this??? New testament? Wasn't the old one perfectly good? And why are you smiling at me, old man?? No I dont want a "prayer wheel" - I've already got some at home."
Then in rearview mirror she sees JC bending down and nips out and runs to back of car.
"Hey YOU!" as he disappears round corner, "What's this sticker mean? 'JESUS SAVES'"

LOL hate most of what you post here, but hell that's funny

Yeah; you can waste a lot of time looking for the super-highway to wisdom. But according to my definition of the word, the closer one gets to wisdom the less suffering one should experience.

Or at least keep in mind what qualifications your translators might and might not have.

Kai (There is so much interesting information that I'm just going to have to settle for the condensed version of most of it.)
