I've just wandered through the "Land Expo" Sims. It was really laggy and there were not that many people there. Lots of sculpty's that take FOREVER to rez. Normally I do not have that much lag even in a very crowded Sim. The lag went away after leaving those Sims so, it had to be something in the Land Expo Sims!!!
For the most-part all I found was land sales/rentals. I could not find anything indicating which vendors were where, and I was bombarded with Notecards even though I stayed on the main streets/paths never entering into any of the vendor spaces.
I am really disappointed!! I was hoping to find vendors with tools to assist landowners in improving/managing their land.
Now for the all important "question"...... Did my impatience cause me to miss something important?

The big problem with the Land Expo and lag is that you have a huge number of individual builders packed into a tight area, all using theuir own textures, sculpts, and scripted stuff to try to make their area look and act spiffy. But no one had time to "fine tune" anything to make it low lag. And with that many completely different scripts and textures and sculps, it's going to be a lagfest, no matter how hard you try. The SL Birthday Celebrations have exactly the same problem.
Best bet is to dig into the Library and put on a very basic "Ruth" male or female avatar, with no prim hair and no attachments. Just avatar hair and avatar mesh clothes. Use that "low-lag form" to check out a laggy set of sims.

Now for the all important "question"...... Did my impatience cause me to miss something important? I'm sure this is not what you're looking for, but my group, Virtual Ability is there, not with a build but with information on making accessible builds for those in SL with various disabilities, who choose, or are forced to enter the virtual world using alternative technology, how to make SL accessible for them. (For example they may be typing with a stylus in their teeth or strapped to their heads). I was there last night as my board was completing set up and it was laggy then too, with only set up people there, so I'm sure it's even moreso today, now that it's open. The additional avatars just add to the problem, that all the builds are already causing. Virtual Ability is giving 2 presentations, one at noon today and one at 2pm tomorrow SLT, on accessible builds in SL. Just FYI, I know this information is outside of the the norm that most people are looking for in the land expo.

The Bay City Alliance has a build, mainly focused on how we all work together as a community to better our part of the mainland. But it's definitely different form a lot of the other places there, which seem to be all about "buy our land" and less about anything else.
Anyway, what I find interesting are the "four new prefabs." Specifically, that they're not precisely "new." Yes, perhaps new to being offered to the general public, but at least three of the four can be seen elsewhere.
Conference Room: See the Boardroom Info Hub or PR Island Baronial Castle: See Castle Valeria Info Hub Moonbase: See Mos Ainsley
I'm not sure on Theater, and if it is available elsewhere on the Grid, but each of these have been parked on the map as Raymond-1 through Raymond-4 for some time.

Fox and Ground has a parcel there, though I got it straightened out with only about a day to set it up in. I don't sell land. I develop land that other people buy, and I help them plan their projects sio they get the right types of sims and so their expectations are in line with the limitations of SL's virtual environment.
People who click my info sign also get info on the adult content changes.
I just went over there with one of my lowest lag avatars. An ARC score of 55, all but 1 of which is just some simple prim shoes. That form can get 15 to 30 FPS even on my low-end PC, but in the LandExpo sims I was getting maybe 3 to 5 FPS at best.
I saw the Bay City Alliance site. There's another very interesting one next to mine for Atlantis Rising, with an underwater build.
I was mildly annoyed that the "Moonbase" sim popped up right behind my parcel. I had a very pretty open ocean there before, and now I have an ugly grey cliff 20 M offshore.

Holy text doesn't load well for me to see half of what's going on or whose there.
There are some nice builds there and way too many automated greeters.

The Nautilus City Alliance has a build that has, I think, only one sculpty (a dolphin). Lag wasn't bad for me when I was there, but then I don't wear prim hair (!) The build shows the basic architectural style of the free buildings available (courtesy of the Lindens) at the Nautilus - Shalim Market. The Expo build has a lot of freebies from creators and merchants with bases in the Nautilus sims, too. Edit--I was just back there, and the build does have a couple of sculpty urns and pillars, besides the dolphin. Still, most of the build is just plain old prims (and it all loaded quickly for me). But when I moved away from that build and tried to fly up....crash. (For this sort of presentation, surely the ordinary server-capacity just won't work...was that considered?)

I sat in on a preso for a while. After I realized that the blank prim at center stage had failed to rez a single slide the whole time, I TP'd out. It wasn't viewer-side lag--even physics was dilated to the point that walking was nearly impossible. I'm quite sure no sculpties loaded--blessed few textures of any kind, for that matter. So, no clue what any of the content was there.
Aside: The link in the email invitation went to a "Not Found" page in the blogs.

From: Ciaran Laval There are some nice builds there and way too many automated greeters. Automated greeters relying on scanners cause lag. Scanners are laggy script functions, best avoided if possible, so in large numbers it would be horrible. But its still probably the sculpties causing the majority of the lag (or temp rezzers if they allow them)

I didn't have much trouble with lag, and things pretty much rezzed fine for me. I was really impressed with the resident owned displays that I had time to look at. There are some really great builds there. I am hoping to go back and have a look at more of them. One of the main reasons I went was for info about the "new" prefab sims Mari mentioned. I found them, but no info about them. I went to the blog and got the slurl for the Expo Welcome Area, and there were signs with pictures of them there, but no info about pricing or availability. I assumed the signs would at least give a notecard, or a something. They don't even dispense landmarks to the sims themselves. You just have to open the map and find them. The only feature the signs seemed to provide was an ample amount of light. This is me looking at the signs with sun set to midnight. :/ Is there info about these sims out there somewhere and I am just missing it? *edit to add: I totally agree about there being too many automated greeters. I was bombed with notecards/landmarks even when I was in the middle of the road.

The lag I've experienced there is typical for such an event - except that one of the booths had a live musician performing, which brought that sim to a crawl. Presentation slides did not load for me until I moved closer to the stage. It's no worse than Hair Fair or any other big expo. I think that the Expo is not sure whether it wants to be business-to-business focused or end resident focused. I think separate B2B and regular resident areas and presentation tracks might improve things for next year - but overall, it is a great event and I have made some helpful contacts. There is something there for most everyone and I encourage you to at least stop by. I am giving a talk on Thurs at 11am about how to appeal to and help first time renters. Hope to see you all there!

1. Agreed, the lag is a killer.
2. If you can find the place. Try search and fail. Had to find it through the blog.
3. Who organized the central area? Not a very intuitive space. If I hadn't heard voices I wouldn't have known the lecture area was right there.
4. LL is going into the castle business? Confused.

Apparently the 4 new sim types are "a sim with pre-built structures on it" that LL hopes may be reasonable sellers.
I checked out two of them. Went to the Moonbase (and even wore my space suit), and explored it. The build is interesting, and was sort of fun to explore for a few minutes. But it isn't all that usable except for a very specific scenario. I can't see a lot of space enthusiasts wanting to buy it.
"The Theatre" is likely to be a good one for Corporations looking to do a presentation to employees, or maybe for people who want to put on cinematic performances. It's strictly a movie theatre, however, and not at all suitable to putting on a stage performance. What I would expect to see a lot with this one is a corp setting it up for a one-shot event, and then returning the sim when done. Or maybe adding it to an existing Corp build as a training space.

I haven't even attended the land expo, so some would argue I don't have any thoughts about it, but I do anyway, right or wrong.
The very day the expo started lag in SL shot through the roof. Everywhere. Even at home where I spend the most time and have the entire build already pre-cached, it can take upwards of two minutes to even have the existence of prims recognized by the client, let alone textures loaded.
Going anyplace I've never been before? 15 to 20 minutes just standing around looking at gray objects. This is a brand new thing that just started in coincidence with the opening of the land expo.
I have the exact same issues with SL's birthday, Relay For Life, Burning Life, or literally any other mass-scale planned event LL tries to put on.
If the grid structure as a whole can't handle these things then wouldn't it be better for promoting a "more predictable" experience like they're raving about with their wonderful news regarding adult content, to stop having these huge events?

The only feature the signs seemed to provide was an ample amount of light. You are so right! There was an insane amount of light! The whole area was awash in light glare. I was also surprised that the signs gave no info or landmarks. I had specifically come to see the new sims, but lag and the radioactive levels of light resulted in my leaving before I could take in much more than the landing area.
