If i look out of my window i can see the LL base/office where it all happens
(http://www.developmag.com/news/26197/Linden-Lab-preps-studio-in-Brighton-UK)

I know they hold alot of the US servers (sims) there (including Midian City, Some of the new continent, City Of Dark Angels, and loads more) I'm assuming that they have to stick to local by-laws and UK laws??

I know there was a problem a few months ago with some silly little by-law, but i was thinking of the more serious laws (such as how we handle homophobia, racism and harrasment is very different from the US)

Like for example here in the UK, a buisness or online server that is based in the UK, that is allowing any form of discrimination can immediatly be shut down, and has to pay a huge fine + court fines)

How do they get around this or whats the deal?

It is a shame that the Rights of Englishmen have fallen so far that you would have a court case. Thank God for Free Speech in the United States.

Drop it. The leader of the Catwalkers made an attempt to talk to you in your last thread. Did you respond?

I have spoken to her, and this is nothing 2 do with that case. i was just wondering

We have free speach here, its just harrasment, discrimination etc etc has a hefty penalty now a days. and it varies from state to state, like up north the penalty isnt so hefty as here in brighton (south east)

Yeah, just as long as you exercise that right somewhere other than a John Kerry debate, you should be OK. :p

As for the rest of Chaos's post:

1) "a buisness or online server that is based in the UK, that is allowing any form of discrimination can immediatly be shut down, and has to pay a huge fine + court fines)"

That is nonsence and you won't find a single precedent to back it up. Our discrimination laws aren't much different to your own.

and

2) Do they really have a server farm at Brighton? I find that hard to believe. As far as I'm aware, all simulators are still hosted at two locations: California and Texas.

Discrimination laws in Brighton are identical to those in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Aberystwyth, Great Yarmouth and Stoke-on-Trent. What on earth are you talking about?

Cite me a by-law that deals with discrimination please.

Just what I was thinking Walker, we mayhave some differences in laws between the member countries of the UK, e.g Scottish Law often differs from English or Welsh Law, but not within countries. In addition I wasn't aware we had any states in the UK.. countries, counties and boroughs maybe.. but states?

I'm not defending homophobic discrimination if this has happened to you OP, but you don't do your case much good when you talk nonsense.

Not going to happen. I can't believe a humming noise was just cited as evidence of a server farm. It wouldn't be located at LL's Brighton offices anyway. Just like those in California and Texas aren't at LL's offices.

Europe's standard on the whole is draconian compared to the US. You can be jailed in many parts of Europe for denying the Holocaust. I don't' see how you can pretend that they have similar standards of speech to the US, where you can get a permit to march with a Nazi flag. I know England is far more lax than many there, but I was under the impression that the EU standards were slowly beginning to take hold in the UK.

Indeed. The mind boggles. I bet Scottish law doesn't vary from the law of England & Wales in this regard either.

For some reason, these "our laws are better than your laws" are quite prevalent in these forums, and we usually end up looking like a tin-pot state that stifles its citizens for no good reason. ;)

their branch in the UK is as much responsible as their US bases
going to the US just to take ll to court is undoable, taking their UK bgranch is alot easier, this has nothing to do with their server location

That really depends which newspapers you read. Murdoch's generally create that impression. For twenty years, the EU has been trying to make us drink litres instead of pints and buy groceries in kilos instead of pounds. We finally kicked their arses all the way back to Belgium a couple of weeks ago.

It ebs and flows. :)

Those could be servers, but not necessarily the Sims on those servers. Since the LL Bank is now in the UK, they could be financial and other administartive servers. Of course the humming sound could be the sound of Lindens trying to think.

I was responding to your comment about it being easier if they have a server farm in the UK. But they don't so it's not. :)

More likely the sound of hairdryers as all the cute guys simultaneously get ready for a night out down at Revenge. Brighton has an awful lot in common with San Francisco. I just wish architecture was one of those things. ;)

No, they don't. It's customer service operations and perhaps you are seeing NCSoft's operation there as well.

I wouldn't recommend it. My Dad's Ass is very temperamental. I put it down to all those carrots we feed it. :D
