Yep I had a look at the 'wiki' a little while ago - takes a bit of figuring out and doesn't really include the informal terminology... It's a wiki. Add stuff. |

"grief"- a word with a once valid and specific meaning that has been reduced to a doublespeak word meaning "that which i don't like." Similar to the RL words "terrorism" and "evil."

SLex - one of those naughty things SLengaged Couples who are in SLove do, Or sometimes total strangers for that matter. Not to be confused with: SLEX - short form of SL Exchange. A place to buy L$ and stuff outside of SL and have it delivered in-world. Also known as SLX. |

In the context of "feted inner core" it would be a verb. Ie. These exclusive people are being feted (celebrated/paid honor to) by Linden Lab. thus making them Fetid… fetid 1599, from L. fetidus "stinking," from fetere "have a bad smell, stink." Perhaps connected with fimus "dung," or with fumus "smoke." ... |

A site made just for the glossary of terms/slang would be cool.
However, I think the SL Wiki is the way to go--if I'm not mistaken, isn't Wiki technology designed for the average person to sign-up and have the power to edit and add entries? This is perfect for jargon and slang. Wiki is the way to go. _____________________

AR (n.) - Abuse Report. A formal report to Linden Lab of a violation of community standards or SL terms of service. Also used as a verb. ("I AR'd the guy."
![]() Borked (v. or adj.) Messed up, broken. "The teleport function is borked again." When something is REALLY messed up, it may be referred to as "Lindened". camping. The practice of earning small amounts of $L by sitting on a chair or engaging in menial activities. Merchants use campers to make their store look more popular on the grid map. Experienced SL Residents don't waste their time camping. Lucky Chairs. Find one that displays the first letter of your name, sit in it, and win a prize. See camping. Rez (v.) - To create an object, or bring an object out of your inventory into the world. TP - Teleport. The fast way to get around the grid. skybox (n.) any building located up in the sky, instead of on the ground. Prim (n.) Short for "primitive". A prim is a basic geometrical shape and the basic building block of all objects in Second Life. Prim limit. The number of prims that can be placed on a given parcel of land. poseball. Usually colored blue (for men) and pink (for women), poseballs contain animations that can make your avatar dance, as well as do many other things. Used by clicking on the ball and selecting "Sit Here" or "Animate" from the menu. Posing Stand - standing on this item locks your avatar in position. Used primarily for editing the position of attached items like hair and jewelry while being worn. griefer - A person whose primary purpose is to harass others and destroy their enjoyment of Second Life. Griefers should be AR'd. LL - Linden Lab, the creators of Second Life. Any employee is referred to as a "Linden" because all of them have that last name when in the game. Lindens, $L - the Linden Dollar, the microcurrency used in Second Life. Lindens can be traded for real world currencies on the Lindex and on other third party exchanges. Lag - An error state that results in slow movement or freezing of your avatar. Can be due to many different causes. cyber - Short for cyber-sex. The practice of engaging in sexual roleplay using chat and Second Life avatars and animations. Client, Server - Second Life consists of two software parts. The client, or viewer, resides on the user's computer. The server resides in a remote location. Sim - A "simulator". Also called a Region. A 65,556 square meter "grid square" on the SL map. May be privately owned, or managed by LL. Sim boundary - the border between two sims. Crossing sim boundaries can cause problems, as your avatar and its settings are transferred from one server to another. ad farm, adfarm- clusters of rotating towers of advertisements, considered by many to be an eyesore. PI - Private Island, a sim owned by someone other than LL. prim hair (or eyelashes, or fingernails.) - You can generate a basic hairstyle with the avatar appearance sliders, but a wig made of prims looks much more realistic. skin - A texture image that replaces the default skin of your avatar. Cannot (usually) be adjusted by the appearance sliders, but looks much better than the default skin. scripted item - an object that contains a program that allows it to behave in various ways. Scripts and animations are the "life" of Second Life. BIAB - "Business In A Box". Often sold to newcomers as an easy way to make money, BIAB packages generally contain merchandise that is poor quality, out of date, or available elsewhere for free. Boxhead - The act of wearing an object, usually a storage prim, on your head or other location. Storage prims are meant to be rezzed on the ground, but newcomers often mistake them for the object(s) they contain, and try to wear them instead. Permissions, Perms - A "full perm" object can be copied, modified, or transferred to someone else. Creators who want to preserve their intellectual property rights usually limit one or more of these object attributes. AO - Animation Overrider. A device that contains replacements for the default walking, sitting, flying, and standing animations of your avatar. Some also have other functions. An AO can be customized by loading your own favorite animations. AOs should be turned off before engaging in poseball or other animations, since the animations can conflict with one another. HUD - Head Up Display. A control panel for an AO or other device that appears on screen. |

^^ Fixed. Sorry. But yes it is, and that's a very good idea. I'd like to see a section created for SLang too. Hey, not fair...nor true. ![]() Vandalizing doesn't last long in Wiki--there is a zero-tolerance rule with Wiki editors. Every entry is tracked (and the author is listed), if you are found to purposefully misinform, you will be banned from editing. Look at Wikipedia...that site is fabulous, and I use it all the time. I don't see much vandalizing there...in fact, I haven't seen ONE misinformation on Wiki (to my knowledge or course). _____________________

Every entry is tracked (and the author is listed), if you are found to purposefully misinform, you will be banned from editing. Revoking editing powers on a public Wiki isn't very effective. Users can only be banned by IP address, which is futile considering many home users still have dynamic ones, and even if a Wiki service banned entire subranges belonging to a particular ISPs (something I can't imagine Wikipedia doing for a second), there's nothing stopping a malicious party from using an anonymous proxy. Unfortunately, it's not that easy. I am friends with an author who has had a biographical entry on Wikipedia for a few years. From March 2005, not a month has gone by when one of his...detractors (to use a kind word) didn't vandalise his page at least three times; although it typically happens a lot more than that. Actually, vandalism has been such a HUGE problem for Wikipedia over the years that you won't have much of a problem finding stories about it. (From the mainstream press too.) They do have measures in place to correct vandalism shortly after it occurs (my author friend's page is generally reverted by a bot within a few hours of any changes), but it's all documented in the history section. Off the top of my head, without even looking, I bet the history section of George Bush and Tony Blair's respective entries reveal insane amounts of vandalism. That's aside from the fact that certain entries have been deliberately 'revised' for political gain over the years -- either painting certain public figures in a better light, or quite the opposite. I have to agree. I have found some Wiki's useful and others pure garbage. _____________________

Don't forget
Flexi, Flexible, Flexified: adjective describing an object made up of a prim or collection of prims, e.g. "flexi skirt" that utilize many of the features on the "Features" tab on the object edit screen. These features force the object to move with the SecondLife wind vector pressures and/or movement of the avatar to which the object is attached. Attachment: An object (clothing, weapons, jewelry, shoes, etc) that can be attached to an avatar at a specific location. Usually location is set by the creator of the object. Ruth: The default avatar: usually female, short, with red swept back hair. Upon teleporting into an area, avatars may "Ruth" or become "Ruthed" when the server or client computers are having issues. Slingo: a game resembling bingo but invented for Second Life. Not to be confused with "SLingo." _____________________

This is perfect for jargon and slang. Wiki is the way to go. I think I would agree with that, the purpose of this thread is really to gather the information. Whereas the forum is perfect for gathering that information it's not ideal for presenting it in some accessible format (ie alphabetical), the Wiki however is. |

Yup I have... I contribute regularly to a WIKI at work, and it's LOTS easier... I don't even know WHERE to put an SL Dictionary... Maybe in the Community Development portal?
