Check out this ava I saw at HIP the other night. They said they used alpha textures in the skin - but I've tried it and couldn't get it to work. Any ideas how this was done?

I think these are prim objects with an amount of transparency locked into it.
Not too sure about the face, but it could be a sculpted mask.

Actually most skins do have alpha channels, but SL does not read them the same way. They are largely used for things like eyelashes. So it may be a transparent skin, but I would say that is a prim avatar and the person is wearing an invis script.

I'm inclined to think no, not a prim with an amount of transparency - we'd just see the actual avatar underneath then. Perhaps invisiprims were used, but the face does throw me for a loop - and how to get the blue tint afterwards?

looks liek they copied each prim maybe making them slightly larger than the one copied and added an alpha channel that sits above the prim.
actually it just looks like alpha channel to me now that i look at it..just using slight transparency..
bleh i need to look at it more lol

Hmm perhaps, invisiprims with regular prims above it, showing blue and alpha colors above. Those are some pretty finely fitted prims, especially the face.

Sculptie, maybe?

I think you may have it. I'm starting work immediately. :)

edit: note how we cannot see the invisiprims on body parts in front of other body parts. This is what gives me pause about this. But it's certainly worth a try.

They could also be hiding the avatar with an oversize megaprim.

Not sure, I clicked the ava to see the profile - wouldn't I have noted the outline of the hiding invisiprim when doing this? Makes me think it was smaller invisiprims shaped to the ava instead.

Also, note the ocean behind. Linden water has a habit of making alpha textures vanish completely. Really has me stumped.

No, there's def no horizon there, even tho we can see the prim trees.

edit: Also cant see part of her right arm behind the torso.

Ghosty, if you have the name of the avatar, try to find a way to meet up with her and while you are talking, right click the different prims, and then go to edit, to see what they actually are.

That wouldn't work, hun. I'd just get the regular ava menu (profile, etc) no matter where I clicked. It's not the same as right-clicking myself.

No. It feels like someone else is doing it........

you can right click someone else's wearable prims and inspect them. during that time, the linked prims will highlight.

Inspect only shows who made the prim. There is no "edit" on the menu.

This is a screenshot I just made of my alt right-clicking the experimental head invisiprim I'm wearing:

And this is what the "inspect" menu option provides:

Yes, the prims highlight, but I cannot tell anything about how they are made as far as qualities, textures etc.

No, the oversized megaprim attachment is a NEW hack to hide the avatar, it doesn't involve invisiprims. It's easier to explain in-world.

Ooh, I'd love to see that. Presently I'm inworld with two prims on my head, as those pics show - the inner one an invisiprim, the outer one a regular prim with a partially trans texture. It's close, but not quite what I saw at HIP.

since no one mentioned it, an alpha texture (totally clear one) used as a skin on an avatar, will only show the newb avatar basic skin texture, it will not make the avatar transparent

I have an idea how they did this, much the same way I make the gemstones for my jewelry

will try when in world tomorrow and see if I can get that effect on a part of my avatar
