http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/12/15/internet.sex.survey/index.html

From: someone

Nearly half of the women questioned by Harris Interactive said they'd be willing to forgo sex for two weeks, rather than give up their Internet access, according to a study released Monday by Intel, which commissioned the survey.

While 46 percent of the women surveyed were willing to engage in abstinence versus losing their Internet, only 30 percent of the men surveyed were willing to do likewise.

So, are women just weird? Or do they figure that, while giving up RL nookie, they can use their internet connection to come to SL and get it on anyway?

I lol'd at the end of the article, btw:

From: someone
Almost half of the men polled said they would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, according to Reuters. That compared with just over a third of women who were willing to make the same sacrifice for the big-screen television.

I guess the question to be considered also is sex with who?

Two weeks wd be a hardship - six-months is ridiculous especially when u consider 300 channels and nothing to watch

Now.. 50"-connected to top of the line super gamer computer... we may need to talk about...

Wait, so women giving up sex for 2 weeks for the interwebs is weirder then men giving up sex for 6 months for a big TV? :p

Yes! Because the big TV costs two and a half grand, while the 2 weeks of internet costs about twenty to thirty bucks!

I idn't even look at the article.....but.....while my fiance was over seas....the internet and my cat were all I had. Two weeks...big friggin deal. I've spent enough time as a single woman to know that two weeks without sex is hardly worth the bat of an eyelash. Would I 'give up' sex in order to not lose my internet ......sure I would. I know dam well I can get sex easily so thee's not much of a contest. The internet provides so many different services (none of which are sexually related for me) that at this point, it's almost integral to my way of life. Case in point......I'm currently studying for my FL state Ins. license which I HAVE to use the web courses to complete.
Even my fiance (who loves sex almost more than he loves good food) would happily abstain in order for me to further my career. I'll go back and read the article when I have time........but right now I'm too full of martini (courtesy of our wonderful neighbors who are in their 70s!) to be able to focus on reading it...... I'll check it though, and try to contribute a more well thought out reply. ;)

LMAO

Ok...I read it....... :p

We (ok, my fiance, not me) just bought a 56" flat screen TV. It's great yeah...but I'm not a big TV person to begin with because I much prefer the interaction of the internet and SL to television. If I've seen it before.....then I'm just bored to tears and would rather be playing solitaire or editing photos in PS. There's not much on TV that I care to watch. But....the web...my computer as a whole....way more interesting because I'm actually DOING something...interacting.....manipulating....socializing.....way more stimulating to the brain (for me) than sitting like a zombie in front of the TV.

Of course...this is something I have yet to convince my fiance of. He cannot stand that I spend any time at all in front of the computer.......yet he can sit in a catatonic state in front of the TV for hours and this is not a problem. what ever. Give up sex.....yeah......please....sex is easy...2 weeks......come on....give us somehting to really chew on, like a year maybe. :p

Men and women are different. It's a hormonal thing. I've also heard a man thinks about sex every three minutes. Women have more sex drive when their ovulation is approaching. Men are also said to be easily stimulated visually, while women aren't so easily. All I have to do is take off my bra because my bra is killing me, and my rl bf goes nutz and suddenly has 40 hands.

Men and women are different. It's been proven by many studies.

Viva la difference. [Edit - woops. Amaranthim already said that.]

Neither the internet nor a plasma TV can topple the ancient mystic pedestal of a lady's presence.

Two weeks without sex is nothing - I'll keep the internet.

I cannot as of yet think of anything that would make me give it up for six months though.

Its all well and good to have sex with a guy but sooner or later you gotta talk to them. With internet I can email my friends.
Two weeks is not long to give up sex, Dakota. Honestly, I dont have sex every day. I do go on teh internet every day for work and emails etc. Not too sure i know any women who have sex every day. I'm sure there are. But when I break up with a guy I can go a while without another relationship. Its not an "imperative" taht I must mate all that often.
Maybe men are the same. They may "think" about sex (that must be a thrill a minute) but they dont necessarily act on it.
So I think internet and TVs are not unreasonable. Can teh person masturbate? If so then a mate is not essential to the equation.

What do they mean by "Give up the Internet"? Do they mean just your home Internet access, not considering work. If so, I can do that for quite awhile. I didn't go online until 2000, and when my 1st computer died a few years back, it was almost six months before I replaced it.

Or do they mean living as if the internet didn't exist? Even that I could probably get used to.

That is true. Maybe its also circumstances? It's easy to give up internet when I am in teh city and in a whirling world but when I go to the High Arctic its essential as a companion. The internet becomes my lover in my seclusion. Maybe for the man teh flickering blue light of teh telly is his dreamgirl: exciting and complicit in all her plasmatic fantasies awaiting his channel selection.
