I think all avatars in the list at registration should be modifiable. Being new in SL is confusing enough without having to immediately confront the Appearance sliders seeming to be broken.

There are tons of teaching notecards and tutorials that assume that the skins and clothes that you get when you register are modifiable. I think LL should drop the nonmod parts from their newbie avatars.

I can see at least one reason for making them no mod...Munchflower Zaius of Nomine donated a skin for (I think) the old Nightclub Female avatar and there have now been several reports of stolen skins which show her as the creator because that particular base was used by the thieves.
Yeah, but it's a skin. These days, making it no-mod protects it from only a tiny obscure corner of all the ways the skin textures could be stolen. Of course, the same could be said for prims, although that "corner" is a little less obscure.

But as recent events have shown, absolutely anything of value that can be ripped eventually will be. Heck, that recent batch of thieves had so much fun with their copybots that they even ripped a free full-perm vehicle--missing the free full-perm vehicle scripts inside.

(They've already lost their accounts and all assets, but I do hope they end up in some miserable French prison when this is all over. I have these images in mind--probably pre-Revolutionary Bastille. Those seem about right. Too bad that whatever horrors befall the thieves, LL can never make it public as a deterrence.)

odd was talking with someone in world.

the new items were no mod at first till she logged back in. then there was both a no mod and a full perm copy in her inventory (she had tried dragging another copy onto her avatar)

So it may be the permissions being broken on rezzing the library items

I didn't mean protecting the skin itself, I meant protecting the original creator from suspicion if they showed up as the 'creator' of a stolen skin, due to their modifiable default av skin being used as a base to add the stolen textures to.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.
