This is absolutely ridiculous.

I am trying to modify my appearance. I am able to modify some parts such as my body shape/shirt but with other parts like my skin colour and hair I get this stupid message saying 'you do not have permission to modify this wearable'

How absolutely ridiculous, can anybody tell me how I can sucsessfully modify every part of myself?

I just cannot believe that SecondLife would actually limit me from modifying certain features.

if you are wearing a hair or skin that someone else made, you may not have modify rights. someone spent time and money to make those. if you buy a new shape, you probably won't be able to modiy that. also, clothes, shoes... anything. not everything is modifiable.

if you wear the SL skins and hair and shape and clothes you got while a newbie, you can modify those.

Go to your Library in inventory and look for a different skin. Or click the 'Create New...' button on the appropriate tab in Appearance.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Second Life isn't keeping you from modifying them. The creators of those items have used what is called "Permissions" They decide what can be done with the things they make, whether it can be modified, copied or transferred. Get used to it. Welcome.

You can always modify your appearance, but sometimes you'll have to do it by putting on a different item, rather than by making modifications to the items you already have on.

Linden Lab recently obtained the help of a few talented creators to make new avatars to replace the woefully basic/ugly avatars that they had. Some items that these people have made are not modifiable. Skin is typically not modifiable, though some people make modifiable skins. Shapes are usually modifiable. Clothing items may or may not be modifiable, in order to preserve the way it looks (e.g., low rise of jeans). It depends on the item.

Let me clarify, I have not brought any clothes, hair types ect, everything I am wearing is what I started off in.

I am unable to modify several parts.

Am doing it right? I click on 'Edit'>'Appearence'>'Hair' and it says:

'Hair: cannot modify'
'You do not have permission to modify this wearable'

ZOMG. Are the new avas not mod? And how would a new person realize this before hand? Gee-yikes, that is an oversight. If they aren't mod, they certainly should be.

Yes. It means the creator has made that item non modifiable. There is one other explanation. Sometimes it takes a while for your inventory to download, and you will get that message when trying to modify items. But since you are new, your inventory shouldn't be a problem.

Everything I used from the library so far is moddable. But, when dealing with tattoo layer skins mods are really done outside of SL and uploaded. And modding clothing with the sliders is, at best, really ugly most of the time. (=_=)y

There are many ways.

You can look through your inventory, especially the library, and find another hairstyle to wear. Just right-click on it and select "wear" and it will replace the hair you have on.

You can create a new hairstyle in the edit appearance window. This will create a new system hairstyle that you can alter as much as you please using the sliders; don't forget to save it when you are done.

You can go shopping for a hairstyle at one of the vast numbers of freebie and non-freebie shops around SL, find one you like, and wear that one instead.

Well, you know why you can't modify it now - someone else (not Linden Lab) made it and put those limitations on it, but here's what you can do! First, your shape. If you get a freebie shape, or if you look in your library, you can probably find one, those are usually modifiable. Put one on that's reasonably close to what you want, the modify it until you like it. Don't forget to save it under a new name! (not that I've ever made that mistake...)

Clothes: You can make your own clothes and modify them as much as you want. Making basic clothes is easy, but you can get as intricate and complicated as you want. A lot of freebie clothes can be modified as well.

Hair: Most prim hair that you buy can be modified to some extent and you'll need to do that to make it fit on your head right. It's usually a little to big or small, and it's often not situated right - your head is poking out the top, or it's too far back on your head, etc. You modify prim hair (or prim anything) by using the "build" feature, not "modify appearance". Look into taking a building class just to get the hang of the basics. NCI offers some, and I think The Shelter does as well. Definitely worth it.

Skin: This is the hardest to modify. If you are new, I would suggest shopping around until you find one that you like and buy it. They are expensive, but making your own skins is not easy. Basic linden skins can be tinted, if you want to be blue or green or something. But for a really good looking skin, just buy some lindens and go get one.

I can see at least one reason for making them no mod...Munchflower Zaius of Nomine donated a skin for (I think) the old Nightclub Female avatar and there have now been several reports of stolen skins which show her as the creator because that particular base was used by the thieves.

Oh, and if the new, nicer starting avs were modifiable, that would tend to decrease the impetus for new players to shop, don't you think? Negative impact on the economy.

Oh, yeah, agreed. I haven't had a chance to look at the new avas as yet. *hangs head in shame* ... don't know how nice, or not-so-nice, the new skins are.

I will say it was a huge incentive to get out of my newbs and get some lindens together for new stuff, simply because I *looked* so new.

I don't know about getting new people to shop because what they have is non-mod. That just seems more an annoyance, as we just witnessed here. I think having the items be of somewhat lesser quality, even if better than the stock ava stuff, would provide a better impetus.

re: hair.

there are two types of hair: hair generated by the system, and an object attached to your head to reflect a more sophisticated hairstyle. The hair you attempted to modify was the system hair. Typically, creators will make a "bald cap" of system hair for your head to wear under the attachment hair. This item may or may not be modifiable, but it makes sense if it was not. You could, theoretically, lengthen that hair and defeat the purpose of it being a bald cap. But your eyebrows are also controlled by the adjusting the system hair, and you would be unable to adjust that look.

You can, of course, always make a new one and start from there.

If the permissions system were more inclusive and protected content better - it wouldn't have to be this way.

Its not your rights to change your appearance being curtailed.

Its the creator of the skin's rights being protected to the extent SL will actually provide for.

Hi, I had this annoying problem when i first joined SL, but you will find many skins out there, in fact ( some ofthe nicest skins I have was from a freebie, and many new friends cant believe it free!) AS many posters where saying, hair is freely avaliable that is modify or u can add, say an extension. Clothes are now mostly modify size wise, so u can fit them closer to your skin, for a better look, but i hardly use the change apearance now thing, I just go on a pose stand and bung on whatever im happy with! Just experiment with it, try and make your avater as normal size if u can, as some clothes/ skins look odd on avaters with out of proportion figures lol But always try the change the appearance thing when u bought new clothes, sme creators will allow u to make (say) the skirt shorter, or longer, tighter or looser, and so on, wearing clothes and skins in SL I found the most stimulating of what makes sl attractive to me, better get your purse/wallet out, or visit the many freebie warehouses!

I haven't been able to locate the new avatars.
Some new and old people will never shop because they are only interested in making their own things or freebies.
Then there are others who will want to change identity for long time.
For longest time when I go look at skins I didn't entirely understand why they didn't look like the images even though I played often with shapes.
There is lot to know and its easy to not understand why somethings do certain things and other times doesn't.
Welcome to Second Life.

They are in the clothing section of the library.

Odd I know, most would look in the body parts section..

Has anyone mentioned that some new free avatars have been added to the library and these might include parts that can't be modified? That might be the problem.

OK - I see it was mentioned above but it's still worth mentioning again.

Not the Inventory folder in your inventory, FD...the LIBRARY folder, the one that has your newbie stuff in it and that nobody ever looks in, hardly.
