There's good virtual realism and bad virtual realism and we see a lot of both in SL.
What I mean here is that even we're looking at something that doesn't exist in RL, like an green 3-eyed space alien, we still want it to look convincing - like how we'd imagine it would look if it did really exist. Bad virtual realism can be found all over SL - e.g. ugly, unrealistic houses rezzed about 3 metres above the ground and with clashing textures! _____________________

Whoops, wrong subject. If I could be a four foot tall ferret guy in RL, I wouldn't need to be an immersionist. SL without immersion seems pointless to me. A PDA with Wifi or 3G is a much better *augmentation* tool than SL. The article referenced appears to be all about how Narrator Protagonist is so much cooler than the important people he hangs out with. Reminds me of Jerry Pournelle at the height of his namedropping period...
