Should LL police resident blogs? Do they?

Human resource departments at major companies are already reading Myspace, blogs, etc and if they don't like what you've written you quite possibly will not get that new job.

Just one good reason I'm glad I don't have a MyFaceSpaceBook Page.

In the event of disclosure of rl info, I would say some action should be taken, but they have better things to do with their time than search the web for it.

3rd Party sites should be off limits.

Firstly LL has no authority there

Secondly they have no way of knowing who is supposedly doing the Blogging is actually doing the Blogging.

I don't think LL should be doing that. Unfortunately, that does leave the sufferer absolutely no recourse, because names, addresses, and phone numbers (amongst other things) are technically public information, so posting them to a weblog is not illegal.

I don't think I've given anyone in SL information that could be used to identify my RL alt.

I think they would take action against websites that make defamatory statements against LL but they wouldn't get involved in resident vs resident disputes. And the fact is that someone who gets banned by LL could easily create an anonymous blog and continue making rude comments. I would imagine this would be the very first thing that would happen for every SL blogger that gets punished by LL and now LL cannot do anything. Problem unresolved and blogger would most likely be very mad at LL. So put out a fire and create a bigger fire that cannot be put out.

And, theres so much out there .... it would take too much in the wway of resources to keep track of it.

If someone went to LL with a complaint of RL info on a third party site, LL should refer them to the owners of the service hosting that site. Or, law enforcement. Or, a lawyer. :) That's where this belongs, not in the hands of LL.

Let's be realistic. Person X posts some RL info about you on a 3rd party site. Your address, or your phone number, or even just where you work. You bitch to LL and, for the sake of argument, LL bans their account.

Have you solved the problem? Noooo ... because the people with your RL info still HAVE your RL info, and may now make things even worse for your retaliation. Going to LL was not the correct step. Going to their web host, a lawyer, or even to law enforcement, is what should have been done.

This is so far outside LL's sphere of influence it's silly. Let's let LL be a virtual environment company - and nothing more. This idea that I should pay LL to police my RL for infractions of their TOS outside of SL is, at best, damn scary.

My faith in mankind is a bit restored, seeing popular sentiment here.

99.9% of the time I think there should be no inworld/outworld/off-grid linkage.

In extreme, extreme, extreme cases (convicted serial killer type stuff) then yeah, I can see linkage making sense.

But ironically, even in an extreme case it would be easier to prosecute and track unlawful behaviour if there wasn't a ban on the avatar.

Gaaa, who thought that one up?

Me.

And as a Mentor, I just banzorred ALL OF YOU!! Bwahahahahaaaaaaa! The forums are mine!!!

Seriously, it wasn't me. I think it's an awful idea and if they wanted to give us police powers, I would quit. I don't want that kind of responsibility.

As for the OP's post, I'm with everyone else. Outside of LL's property - the grids, these forums, etc. LL should not interfere. Yes, truly awful things are said on blogs which would be totally against the TOS here. But they are not said within LL's jurisdiction. It would be like the USA prosecuting people who go to Amsterdam and smoke pot and visit prostitutes. It's not legal here, but it is there.

It would be a dangerous precedent. You would weed out the really horrid people, but you would get to many good ones in the process, and I don't want to be looking over my shoulder all the time, wondering if I'm going to accidentally cross the line.

It seems that some of the more well known blogs related to SL and run by well known SL residents are becoming more inflamatory. Naming names is common fare for these websites, vitriolic attacks are posted daily, and now some of them have fallen to posting personal RL information about residents, blatant racism, and seemingly outright lies.

As much as I don't want LL to police resident websites it eventually becomes clear that these authors of contempt are merely skirting the law of the land and perhaps maybe something should be done to insure resident safety. Abuses that would not be within TOS on one side of the virtual wall reign freely beyond it. It's as if they are going up to the line of the TOS and spitting over it.

I would like to see LL make a change and start policing some of the more insane bloggers of SL. We know who they are and so does LL. Implementing a policy that your SL account could be held responsible for certain speech violations on third party sites would be a positive move in my opinion.

If I get upset with Sally Avatar and I post her RL address on my blog then my SL account should be banned. If I make racist and inflammatory comments about Joe Avatar on my blog then my SL account should be banned.

This just seems clear to me and I'm amazed LL has not been more aggressive in protecting their residents.

What do you think?

Are you freaking serious?

Linden Lab surfing the web looking for posts by Briana Dawson and checking them for SL TOS infringement? Will they also start requiring a RL code of conduct as well?

How does that sound right to you? Are you American? Do you live under the same flag I enlisted and served in the U.S. military to defend? Surely you are not advocating a loss of free speech as the cost of joining a virtual world?

Do yourself a favor and stop reading those 3rd party websites. If other people have problems with those websites and it involves RL information then the involved people can resolve the matter faster than using LL as a go between. And the issue of fraud has also been mentioned.

I don't think SL is really QUITE so desirable that people would be willing to give up their rights to free speech on their own blog and third-party websites just to participate in SL.

No! Leave it up! I like his moustache. I'm working on a big Sam Elliott moustache myself, and it makes me happy to know mine is better than his.

Reminds me. I went to the Red Square build in SL and if you go into Lenin's tomb, his carcass welcomes you to Moscow.

Lenin's Corpse says, "Welcome to Moscow, Comrade Trout Recreant!" or some such nonsense.

GLASNOST!!!!
