http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Search_keywords

(Sorry, I accidentally also posted this in technical, but meant resident answers.)

I mean this list of keywords & filtering is dumbfounding. Did Linden Lab take it to far? Why not just block people from going to the places through search? Why not allow people to see the shops window, just not let them into the shop?

Linden Lab should treat search more like Google, using unfiltered results because some non adult results will fall through the cracks. Honestly, this is a bad idea the way Linden Lab uses blanket filtering for adult content on a search level. There could be valid non adult results for some of those keywords.

Question: What would you do differently?

Side Note: I am all for the basic idea and principle for this move, and will not be negatively effected by the new Adult Content Filtering systems, but this is just getting silly.

Of course oral is okay, it has various meanings not dealing with anything remotely sexual. If you need to tag your shop with anal, it's almost guaranteed to have something to do with sex.

As for the filter, it's not like it's a pure filter. You can still include them in search if you want to, and if you're allowed to.

May be true, but penis is sent as adult, yet cocksucker is not filtered. I am not really protesting the keywords, but the underlying use of blanket filtering.

[Edit] This is the overall problem "Certain keywords are only allowed to be used for Adult flagged search entries. If you attempt to search using these words and the adult content checkbox is not active, you will get a popup message telling you "some terms in your search query were excluded due to content restrictions..." " [/Edit]

Weren't we assured that "sexy clothing" and "non-sexualize nudity" would be acceptable? why is "Fetish" on that list?

Or labia, vagina, penis?

Another problem people are quick to forget, is that SL's search is really lame in terms of filtering. Ban "sex" and you've banned "essex" too. Ban "gor" and "gorgeous" is banned. A lot of words are going to get caught up in this problem.

"Analysis" being one.

Wonder how many words contain the letters P-E-E.

/me peeks to see if her peeps are online.

I guess they can't ban "oral" because that would also ban "Moral".

Who the flying f**k came up with filtering BDSM, but NOT filtering B/D/S/M??? And why are "boobs" being filtered but not the various drug references, even torture, when LL said that these will clearly fall into the adult area???

This is bonkers.

Marijuana is legal in some states. Namely Cali where LL Main offices are lol

Maybe the reason?

Only medical marijuana is legal in California. But the Federal Government also has an opinion on the matter, and they don't care if cancer sufferers have a prescription. So it's not as if folks have a pass on that stuff in this state, stereotypes notwithstanding.

But not crack, heroine and cocaine.

Oh, and by the way - why do they censor threesome, but not foursome??? And not filtering out "torture" and "necrophilia" still gets me...

I presume that the North Lincolnshire Council won't be considering an SL presence in the near future then?

Not only in California.

Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington; all allow medical marijuana use.

They missed a lot and I am wondering why they are not filtering some of those listed...... hmmm I see we wont be able to find anything anymore...

Not that I go looking for those things on the list...

This is not going to keep the teens safe and LL is freakin crazy to even think this all in an effort to save money in the long run will cost them big time...

Is assinine searchable?

There are many live music and DJ venues that promote the use of pot and I gotta wonder how that willplay into the search, because when the kiddies search for live music, and tp into a venue with a huge pot leaf and bongs.... No mention of this in their ads, but they are there...

There's even a term for this: the "Scunthorpe Problem" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scunthorpe_Problem

(closely related to the Clitheroe and Penistone problems)

<edit> blink and you'll miss it; Pep got to the joke first.

actually no, (at least according to that page)
"Filtered words which are substrings within longer words are not filtered"

that means only whole words, so they could easily filter Gor and not gorgeous, likewise "Anal-Retentive" wouldn't be filtered but "Anal Retentive" would.

a few things that are filtered though
From: someone

Anal Retentive
Asphyxiation Hazard
Machinery Cannibalism
Cock Fight
Deepthroat (a common misspelled reference to anonymous informants)
Dolcett (ya know this is an actual persons last name)
Dominatrix (*ok annoyance, not all domming is about sex)
Domme (again *)
Castle Dungeon
Security Escort
Femdom (and Again *)
Voodo Fetish
Gor (guilt by association? what about weapons stores? clothing stores?)
Gorean (more assigned guilt)
Ladyboy (asian women that were men are automatically 'adult'?)
Loli (this one pisses me of, since it includes an entire range of goth fashion)
Penis (great now we have valid medical terms in here)
The Needle's Prick (Sleeping beauty anyone?)
Scat (another annoyance, there's a whole musical genre here)
Master - Slave (computing reference)
Snuff (anybody chew tobacco? how about blowing out candles?)
Strapon toolbelt
Prim Stripper (for removing prim settings that may only be set by script)
Tree Swinger (for the simian av)
Vagina (yay, more medical filtering )

ETA and this is why mature is always checked when I search

I have not misspelled anything. As a matter of fact, the addition of one s does not make this a misspelling consulting the urban dictionary...But then again I forget you get off on making others feel small and worthless and I suppose this makes you feel much more important.. Unfortunantly, if all you have is a "asinine" or "assinine" comment about someone spelling then you really should just duct tape your fingers and resist the urge to respond it only makes you look hmm,.. whats the word??

Tarina, much as I hate to a) support Pep, and b) bog a thread down in details on spelling, the comment is relevant to the thread. If you spell something incorrectly, it will affect whether the search function finds it or not, and whether it matches any filters it has.

And I really hope you're not serious when citing the Urban Dictionary as a reference.

Speaking of spelling, what are the odds that people will start using intentional misspellings in order to attract searchers who make typos or misspell stuff? How about using foreign languages in searches? Will those be filtered?

Like the other examples that have been mentioned, Scunthorpe is fine. Only exact words are filtered - not part words. E.g. "sexy" is ok but "sex" isn't.

There is nothing wrong with doing that. It's a normal practise.
