I was wondering what everyone's price point is. At what price level do you buy things without much thought? Let's say you are at a new store and spot something you really like. If you see it under a certain price do you buy it right away? What is that price that it should be under for you to impulse buy?

My price point is 300L. Anything over that and I think about it for a while.

I don't have a particular price point, but from my experience the price point for a lot of residents is L$1. :D

Isn't the stipend 300L?

I'd say most people's price point is around there.

If it's less than L$20, I would consider it an impulse buy. Any more than that and I have to justify the spending and the impact on my inventory. (^_^)

Though... When a new Mamesando avatar comes out... I run out to grab it and the AO (Usually L$1200 or more for both) faster than you can say "Yatta!" (^_^)y

With 49 regions, if I put down a price point like that it might be kinda hypocritical...

...on the other hand, when I clear down my Lost and Found and empty Trash and stuff I got maybe 3500 to 4000 items that I keep. About half of that is the "Library" that comes with every avatar and most of the rest of it is estate infrastructure.

If I really need something, though, I just get it. Costs what it costs. Of course I won't be stupid if two identical items are selling for $L 1 and $L 1k.

My price points depend on the item category and expected usefulness to me. Clothing, skins and hair are fairly low. Items to be incorporated into my business products are much higher. My willingness to spend stops at 10k. Unless it is land, there is nothing in SL that I would spend over L10k on.

It depends on the item. I won't spend over $500L or so for a pair of shoes, but a new helicopter, or other toy will have a higher threshold. The money I spend in SL is part of my expendable entertainment budget, so I don't pinch pennies too much. In the end, if I want it and it isn't outrageously overpriced, I buy it without much thought.

I don't really have one it seems. If I really want something,I get it. Unless it is 99,999 lindens for a pair of shoes or something ridiculous like that.

It used to be significantly lower when I asked or answered this question about a year ago...but now it's between 800-1,000L.

Depends entirely on what the item is, how well it appears to be made/textured/scripted or whatever and how much it stands out from other similar items offered elsewhere.

Did you have a particular category in mind, Bree?

I also agree it depends on the item and my "Musthavidness" factor.

there are some shoes that are quite nice, but I wince at the price of L$500 for just a pair of shoes.

Then again I'd not pay a lot for shoes in RL either.

A Helecopter however is worth a lot more that a pair of shoes :)

Most products at L$9999 I'd just look at it and think I'd like that, but I'm not paying that.

L$20 for nice items is like WOW SNATCH :D

At one shop a guy is selling some really nice modern hanging lamps. 1 prim scuplties, and L$ each. I've bought about 8 so far and will get some more. Fantastic.

What I love is to find something that's low cost L$99 and is really good quality, as they person has put a lot of time and care into it, and just want other to enjoy it at a low price point. I know some are in it for the money though.

Pile em high and sell em cheap has always been a RL motto I like :)

But L$99 and If it sound like something I'd like, then I'll grab it I guess.

I spent L$500 for a dress the other night, it was a 'must have' for me. If I ever find some braids or dreads that I love, I will have no upper limit, been looking too long, at too many places. If I love it I'll get it, I can pinch pennies in RL. Usually I spend around L$300 for a clothing or shoes or hair, just because that's what it usually costs, and I like it.

I really don't have one. It just depends on how bad I want the item. I do like some of the fatpacks offered at some designer stores but then I ask do I really need that in every color. It would be nice if some of the designers offer diferent styles of clothing in their fatpack I am be more inclined to buy. My hubby anything that has to do with what I call his "other woman" he'll spend like crazy. Fishing and 7Seas at that. Fishing is both his rl and sl passion. Well...other than me.

I have to agree that the point varies a lot based on the quality and complexity of the item, as well as how well that item fills a niche in my inventory and my needs.

A new dress or new hairstyle has a lower price point, for me than a new avatar, or a scripted purchase like a good bed, or a Rez Foo system, or a MystiTool.

But like Desmond, if it is something I want, and the quality seems good, I'll usually buy it without much regard for the price, unless that price seems WAY off from similar items made by other merchants.

An item under L$50 rarely gets a second thought as to price, if it looks worth having.

Clothes or hair, I'll readily spend L$300 to L$600 without batting an eye, if it looks good - (yet some of my favorite hairstyles lately have been only L$50 per style for thre color versions).

Avatars? L$900 or less is a no-brainer, if the quality is good and I like how it looks.

Most other stuff I don't generally buy as "impulse" items, and would consider a number of factors before buying.

I have no price point. As others have said, it all depends on how badly I want an item. I am limited, though, because I purposely keep my lindens low. Currently I have only L$1400 in my account so I wouldn't go over half that for now.

Depends on what it is. And how good it is. I've bought avatars on seeing them for L$900 and dithered over a L$50 jacket.

If your question is in regard to your own work and how to price it then id say thats for you to decide entirely. Making your prices too low just shows a lack of confidence in your work and that will be communicated to those visiting your store. Also dont judge yourself against your competitors create your own standards.

The more important question to ask is about the qaulity level of your work though. If its high quality well designed original work that people will actually want to wear and or use rather than something that ends up dead in thier invent then you can quite fairly demand a good price for this.
So i guess my point is that simply asking price points of people without any kind of further information or relation to other factors wont really give you any usefull information. One thing i would say though be confident and remember that psychology and communication are very important when selling.

As female skins have been mentioned..........

It seems such a shame, but I've spoke to a few ladies who've paid BIG Bucks for skins that (when they have them) they regard as rubbish, and yet bought other ones for a fair amoung less that are superb in comparison.

I do know that some screenshots of skins are a tiny bit (dare I say it) misleading.

The best places of course, would give demo's or models in store to view.

I'm sure we've all been caught by the trap of paying a hih proce for something that looks excelent (and a partof our brain tells us is much be good for THAT price) and yet when we buy it we feel a bit cheated.

I measure everything in McDonalds happy meals. If I see something that costs less than the equivilant of 2 happy meals and it catches my eye I buy it without really thinking about it. 3 or more happy meals and I stop and think about whether I REALLY need it... and then I probably buy it anyway. :)

My price point is probably 2k-5k.

When it comes to clothes depending on what it is really makes a difference.

Dress from Nicky Ree, my price point is around 1600L

Dress from Ivalde, my price point is around $500

Shorts from anywhere has a price point of about $300

Shoes have a price point of about $500 - I will never buy Stiletto Moody (Shiny Things and J's for the win).

Objects have their own price point. I paid 36k for the largest yacht built in SL. I have paid 18k for a dress in 2004 that now looks like crap since it needs flexi's. I paid 10k for skin in 04' that i can't wear anymore.

I have even paid 6k for a pre-fab.

I guess it depends on the maker, the item and the quality.

This cracked me up, makes me want a cheeseburger!

I see something I fancy for 10L it's a no brainer and bought quickly... clothing I will definitely buy if it's under 200L (I love to shop)... if the outfit is over 400L I will have to think about it... Shoes i will grab if I like them under 150L without a thought. I have a ton of slade & humby heels, I feel the quality is fabulous and the price is quite reasonable... I have a couple pairs of minx shoes, which are beautiful, but 500L for shoes is a bit steep so only own 2 pair of those. I too budget money for sl every week, it's the only entertainment I pay for :)

Everything I buy is generally classed as an investment and consists of either textures, sculpt maps or business tools. So I look at what my expected return would be on that purchase and set a price point accordingly. If ever I need something random that isn't business related I make it or pick up a freebie as I am a tight fisted git.
