To heck with the neighbors?

Alright my questoin.....How much of an a-hole am I if I put a build on my ground level in a pricey sim that would be ugly to the neighbours? Kepp in mind I'm not doing it becuase it's ugly or becuase I don't like the neighbours or something. Inside the build will look wonderfull with the linden water inside of it but the outside not so much especially along with everyone elses nautical theme going on around me....but heck it's my adult land and I can do as I please with it yes?

If you are building it because it is what you want to build, and you have some purpose for it, then I would say yes. You paid for the land, you can build what you like on it. If it isn't encroaching or spewing particles or anything like that, I see no issue.

Yeppers It's only becuase it's what I want my build to be and I have plans...big plans...ok maybe not so big plans for it...I guess I can always stick a giant megacube over it

fourtunately one of the long sides as well as one of the short sides is linden land but in the adjoining sims that's another matter but I think you're in the clear

You pay for the privilege of doing whatever you want on the Mainland. But if you yourself know it's going to be ugly, why not try to come up with a better solution?

I must say it's refreshing that you even asked. I've seen my share of Mainland eyesores in my day and just assumed the builders were tasteless or aesthetically challenged.

The instead looks great I just don't know what to do about the outside it's sorta creamshop meets the breeding room type of thing so it's not like a simple box and I wuoldn't even know what kind of textures to throw onthe outside to make it less ugly from that veiwpoint but then again I wouldn't mind helping depriciate adult land down to the value of the rest of mainland

It's your land, you have the right to do as you wish. But, I'm glad that you are showing some consideration, as you seem to have a nagging "if" inside and are beginning to think about better design solutions.

So, to answer you directly, I'd say that you are a normal average a-hole like most of us, but with a strong chance of redemption if you continue to think. (Except if you lived near me, then I'd say major, being a typical nimby, heehee.)

A talented builder should be alble to make even a pure cube look interesting from the outside.

What you should be asking for is suggestions as to how to do this.

Good point...how do I cover a 80x50x50 blight......keep in mind side to side I only have say 55m

Perhaps the ugliness on the outside is intentional..........contrast with the beauty inside.

Just a thought...........I know someone who deliberately made the outside look amateurish. But, wow, when you stepped inside. Quite an awesome build actually.

I would consider you an [expletive deleted] if you did it near me, but I wouldn't have any power to do anything about it.

So look at it this way: do you want the people living you to have you on their ban and mute list, or their friend list, or their 'who is that guy' list?

To get on their friend list, follow the theme of the hood at ground, and build away in the sky.

To get on their 'who is that guy?' list - just build something pleasant but not of interest to anyone else, or leave ground blank.

To get on the mute and ban list - you've listed the plan in your post. If one of your neighbors is an even worse jerk, you may find yourself stuck in a griefing war. Ask yourself now if you want to spend the energy dealing with someone who is even worse than you and knows the tricks to being really mean in SL.
- I recommend not going down that road if you know now already how to avoid doing so. Sure in the end, your AR against them will probably win out over their AR against you, but how long will that take and how un-fun will SL get during the time it takes for the Lindens to step in and resolve things?

Paint the cube with the Zindra road texture. Everyone absolutely adores teal. Its the real reason everyone rushed off to Zindra, even when they pretend it was something else.

Just build what you want to build. It can't be worse than my neighbor (in a different sim that backs up to me) and his +4 terraforming to create something similar to an air craft carrier flight deck. I doubt you will be griefed, or even looked askew at..........most people don't pay attention to their neighbor's builds. They enjoy their builds........everyone else's are just background noise that they filter out.

There are just so many possible examples both in SL and in RL that you could follow or find inspiration from. Have a look at Showcase in search - there's plenty of interesting-looking builds to look at there. And keep your eyes open as you wander around, again both in SL and RL.

And in SL you have the advantage that changing things is a lot easier and cheaper than in RL.

If your on the water, why not use some water scene...just on the outside texture of course? I know its your land and you of course may do as you wish..but why would you want to be known for something ugly if it gives a bad impression of the beauty you speak of inside...be proud of your build, inside and out. Speaks volumes for you and your skills.

I personally think you'll be happier if you step back, puzzle it out and have something you are proud of from both the inside and the outside.

At very least, you could make it look like a rocky isle or something. Four to six megaprim sculpties... seriously.

The next answer - just build something nice that won't offend people. Obviously you plan isnt goign to work coz you say its ugly. Would you build it in real? If not, then don't build it here. Ugly is ugly wherever it is.
