... the staff would only be there (to try) to keep the building open, with varying amounts of success

... customers could come in, cook anything they liked, and even sell it to other customers, but they'd have to supply their own recipes, often expensive utensils, precook most of their meals, and then try to figure out how to use the restaurants' equipment (which was built by one of those Shakespearean monkeys on crack) on their own to serve it. When the food was served, the staff might come by and change ingredients after the fact, ruining the dish.

... other business' would be allowed to provide payroll/credit systems and order delivery/advertising/takeout services, that the restaurant didn't, only to be undercut or bought out at a later dater, with a general decline in the level of service.

customers would be allowed to add on their own rooms, and charge others to use them, and even be freely promoted, based on how many people used the room, encouraging the room owners to fill them with coma patients.

If Philip Rosedale built a restaurant . . .

The menu would automatically appear in your ass when you arrive. Once you pull it out, it will take ten minutes for the words to resolve. At least two weirdly-dressed guys with stiff hair fly in off the street, right to your table, and ask if you want sex.

"Due to kitchen lag, the steak will be later than expected....terribly sorry about this"

"Waitor, there's a fly in my soup!"...."No sir, that's just a lost prim....."

"How was the steak sir?"...."I dunno...it suddenly flew away from my plate!!"

"Waitor, there's a fly in my soup!"...."Please fill in a bug report Sir...."

The restaurant would wildly hyped, and great numbers of customers would show up once or twice. There would be a group of loyal regulards who would do nothing but complain about the menu, the service , the quality of the food, even the pricing. But they would still continue to eat there.

Is this Philip Rosedale's restaurant, or Olive Garden?

I bet that if Philip ran a restaurant it would be a very good restaurant. Compared to creating the 3D internet, running a restaurant is a solved problem.

If Google ran a restaurant, there'd be no food or cooking equipment at all. When you ordered something, they'd give you a list of places that do serve what you ordered.

It would be one of those where the waiter intentionally insults you. :) They would also bring you what they think you need, rather than what you order. Their prices would be rather expensive, a very long waiting line, with only the first 80 people getting in each day. People would complain about the service, the prices, and the food, but would somehow be back in line every day.

All of the people sitting in the VIP area would be the Head Chef's friends, but when asked they would deny that fact. There would be a decent decor, but anyone peeking into the kitchen would see something straight out of "Kitchen Nighmares".

Hmm, I think a restaurant provides a lot of parallel. I could do this all day. :)

True, but the menus would be clean, simple and well laid-out, and the restaurant would become the standard by which all others are judged. In time its name would appear in dictionaries as the synonym for visiting a restaurant.

At Philip's restaurant, at the top right corner of the menu would be a picture of Aimee Weber's avatar.

The restaurant would be overrun with hookers, and occasionally you would find yourself flying through the air in a cage or being shot by giant phalluses and other indignities while attempting to eat your food.

You could rent a booth at which to safely eat your food, and you could rent out your booth to other customers, however, the pricing structure on the booths would change continously.

As mentioned earlier, no management is in sight, although they do place notices on a screen at the front of the restaurant.

Philip might make a gadget filled restaurant, a Chucky Cheese on steroids. Microsoft Surfaces on the tables and walls, doors that open in an iris-like manner, robotic waiters, drinks dispensed via pneumatic tubes, holographic projections of Second Life scenes, stuff like that.
