Need help....Re: housing and land questions

I think I might have found a nice piece of beachfront property. I'll have to pay a little more for it but everything else I have seen looks like crap. For a couple of thousand L$ more I think it is worth it, espcially if I plan on sticking around for awhile.

My questions are:

1. This land is really kind of a float. It sits on a water parcel. Am I right in assuming that I can terraform this into real land when I buy it and then build my house on it?

2. As far as housing goes. I am assuming that I can erect a house and if I don't like it then I can just delete it and try another one? I will probably use one of the free houses that are around for now. I'll design my own one later.

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

In response to your first question.......does this parcel come with a covenant? If so, terraforming would be included in the covenant on whether or not you can terraform. If not, than yes, you can.

The second question........yes you can rez a prefab and take it down if you don't like it.

1. It depends. You can only raise and lower land so far and a lot of the 'floats' are out there because the land cannot be raised above the water line.

2. Sure.

But I should be able to raise the land enough to at least build a house on it, right?

There are no covenants on the land.

Not necessarily. I forget what the limit is...like +/-4m from the base level? If the water under the float is fairly deep, I'd say you probably won't be able to raise it above the water line.

But, given that it's SL, you don't actually need land to build on. Lots of people live in the sky and a few even keep house underwater.

Sometimes, but sometimes not. Best to ask the owner to show you how much you can terraform it. Don't take his word for it, have him show you...Yes you can build on it anyway, many do. People build on prims on water...and you can texture them to look like grass, sand, anything you want really. On mainland, you can do whatever you want on your own land.

no. and as a rule of thumb, if you can walk along the bottom and your head is REALLY close to the surface or over it, you might be able to raise it to just surface level.... if you are deep, you won't be able to raise that land above water.

how much are you willing to spend per meter for waterfront? the new continent has several quality spots right now, but some are expensive (imo). i paid WAAAAAAAAAY extra for waterfront because it was a really nice spot, and i have no regrets.

There is a good chance the land won't come up above the waterline. But you can put a prim beach down. and of course, since there's no worries about gravity, you can rez a house and a dock right on the water if you want.

Once the land is yours, you can rez anything you want as long as it's within your prim limit.

I didn't know this was possible. (building on water or in the sky). Is there a idiot proof tutorial that can help me with this?

There are plenty of tutorials and classes you can take. Check the Ivory Tower of Prims.

As far as building goes, gravity is not an issue. You can build anywhere from under water up to about 750 meters in the sky with no problems. Above 750m, stuff gets squirrely and you might have problems. In fact, a lot of people build homes up in the sky to get privacy or to leave their land open for landscaping. Skyboxes often have all sorts of aesthetic devices that explain why they are hanging in space - baloons, rockets, Antigravity units, etc. but those are all for show and don't actually do anything. If I were building a skybox, I'd have the disembodied hand of God suspending the box by silver strands tied to His fingers.

Mine is just a house, floating in space. I've made absolutely no attempt to justify what it's doing up there. :D

well it is an issue if you check the little box that says physics (or whatever)

then the prim will react to gravity and such hehe

(found that out the hard way once) had a ball rolling all over the place

Which reminds me. (sorry to change the subject but it looks like the OP's question was answered)

Have you ever built a sphere, made it semi transparent and hollow....then make a cut into it so that your avatar can step inside.
Then set the sphere to enable physics.

find the nearest hill and GOOO! woo hooo!

Its a lot of fun to watch your avatar inside of the sphere as it rolls down the hill....and even better if there is a body of water at the bottom...LOL
oh...and make a jump to go over also.

hehe

Dartagnan :-
Is the land mainland or private estate?

Its generally best to NEVER "buy" private estate land, just rent it.

(If you insist on "buying" private estate land then only pick a land baron who owns at least 10 sims as their own continent and check their tenants are happy with the financial situation, and also check on rules of how you sell it when you want to move).

It is mainland and under estate owner it says "none", however, there is a person that has to be paid.

the new corsica contintent. just open your map, click the button that shows land for sale, switch it off and on to see what's under the yellow spots, and TP over to the ones that interest you, following the waters' edges. there are TONS!

if you really like it, and the price is within your means, AND you can walk along the bottom and your head is VERY near the surface, then you should go for it. i hope you are certain it's mainland. which continent?

If you click about land, under the Covenant tab, does it say:

Estate Mainland ?

I would not guarantee that you will be able to raise the land, a lot of people sell these plots with a float on for the reason that they cant be raised any higher. But there are ways around it.. you can still make it pretty with a floating island :)

Sonyo. The water is too deep, but if I can build a floating island or build a skyhome, then it would be okay.

Just bear in mind that building an island would take some of your prim allowance. You can, of course, just drop you house directly onto the water, it won't sink :-)
