Aha! Try RenderTreeLODFactor set to about 4.0 (instead of the 0.5 default). Takes effect immediately, don't need to relog.

(Sorry, Ann, the RenderNekoLODFactor doesn't seem to work.)
You mean it actually works!?!?!? (O_O)
