Should Second Life be a network in facebook?

Why the heck not, it's as good a collective entity as any.

The group has 90 members including some of the Linden staff.

I have no interest in it at all, but why not? There should be something for everyone in SL.

Why not?
I have a Facebook page to keep contact with (and an eye on) my niece and nephew, along with friends I went to highschool with. I'm not sure I would join the SL network, though. I don't really see the advantage.

There's already a Facebook app to help you connect with your SL friends. See http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=10242435556 for info.

Now this is a bugbear of mine. Should Second Life be a network in facebook? Yes, but only because Second Life's absurd group limitations are so prohibitive. Second Life should be its own facebook and it's a crying shame that LL don't realise this.

It is kind of ridiculous you should have to leave the world for any type of networking.

It's true, there is an application related to Second Life in facebook, I'm in that, but that's not the same thing as Second Life having Network status.

I'm afraid that I can't see a single thing that would raise this idea beyond the "no! are you stupid?" level.

Not surprising, facebook didn't exist in the aethernet era.

I noticed that you have used your avatar name for your FB account Suezanne; were you thinking of a network in which others do the same? Or for people to use their rl accounts?

edit to add: If everyone uses avatar names, I can't see how FB adds any functionality not already possible within SL and the various forums. It does add another dimension if you are using your rl name, and then that's of course up to individuals to decide if they are willing to make that leap.

I personally feel that using an avatar name to join a networking site in which all your peers are using their real life identities as being a little 'unequal'.

I use FB mainly for online networking with my rl friends (though I have two people I know only via SL as friends, both using their real identity), but I am a member of various groups, including the SL one above.

Remember Facebook is a Adbase site, its whole intention is to collate information to sell for advertising. There was a program were a journalist asked the owner of Facebook if he felt bad about selling EVERY bit of private information of it members on the site and his answer was short and to the point "No, it's a Adbased site"

But the adverts are not overbearing, and you certainly don't get contacted directly, either via FB or otherwise.

The ads you get are targetted to YOU from the information you provide, this method of advertising is very clever and very successful, the reason you probably don't mind is because your actually seeing the ads that are indeed specific to you.

Trust me, I do understand how it works Dekka; my point is that the advertising is kept to a minimum on the site and is in no way overbearing.

There are many folks registered with facebook under avatar names, at least six of them being Linden staff registed with the Linden name.

Of the names that are presented as real names, only naive people believe they are all real names.

I share something in common with these folks that are virtual world enthusiasts and memberr of Second Life, regardless of how they are named, but I can't express that commonality by choosing it as a network in facebook.

I don't much like where I live, I don't remember much about college, my workplace is not a choice and I don't like anyone much at my workplace and i don't need to interact with them on facebook because I see quite enough of them five days a the week. High School is only for folks in a high school.

I've been in Second Life longer than I was in college and longer than I was in high school.

Folks suggesting to me to join Second Life Residents or telling me about the Second Life Link group are perhaps not involved enough in facebook to read the posts in those groups or know how to check group membership.

What harm would befall anyone from adding "Virtual World" to the list of networking categories such that it would be read "Region, College, Workplace, High School, Virtual World" and having Second Life as a choice in the virtual world list? Doing so would allow me to express my social relationships more accurately in facebook, and it would make me happy. It would be a nice promotion for Linden Lab and the Second Life virtual world.

Point taken Suezanne; I just wasn't sure that FB added any more functionality than SL and related sites already provide, but clearly you feel it would, and so I can see it would for others, too. I suppose I have only ever used FB to network online with people I know in real, using real identities. I have only two friends on FB that I have never met (only know them via SL), and I am 100% certain of their identities (as both are very well known longtime residents in SL who have their real identity 'out there'), and so I am comfortable with that. I have no problem joining groups in which members use an avatar identity, but I doubt I would add them as a friend (friends can see all profile details), just because I feel the disclosure would be a little 'unbalanced'.
