Hmmm. This posted on the SL Blogs, by M. Linden:

From: M. Linden
Hello Residents,

I've read and re-read your comments and the many emails, notecards and IMs I received after my 2010 blog post. Thank you for making yourselves heard and for your words of criticism and of support. I appreciate it. You came through loud and clear.

Yes, I'm excited and optimistic about the future. Very optimistic -- unapologetically so. And, I am very focused on ensuring Second Life has a vibrant future.

We're investing more than we ever have in domain experts, technology and infastructure to address major problem areas (Lag, Stability, Content Protection, etc.) to move the platform forward. You've asked for more updates on important projects and I am happy to report that's on its way too:

* To start, I am inviting everyone who posted a comment on my post to 2-3 inworld office hours in February. We will schedule them at times that are comfortable for different parts of the world. It will take a couple of weeks to get scheduled so if you commented on my previous post, expect an invitation by the end of the month.
* FJ posted an update last week on our MySQL upgrade (a major feat which went well, all things considered) and Charity posted a follow-up yesterday.
* Later this week, T is going to do his quarterly post on the Second Life economy and recap 2009.
* In the next several weeks, Howard will blog on the work that has gone into Viewer 2.0.
* FJ will update you on our roadmap for Lag and Stability later this month.
* Cyn and Marty will update you on our Content Protection roadmap, as well.
* We've recently hired a Conversation Manager (Wallace Linden) to help improve communications both on the blogs and forums and directly with the Resident community. He’ll introduce himself later this week.

In closing, I want to thank you for the terrific response to my 2010 post. You’ll be hearing more from me and other Lindens this year, and I am looking forward to more great conversations.

Thank you.

I await your thoughts and comments on the meaning and potential of this announcement with interest.

I suspect he will be like Katt Linden 2.0

I think this is his twitter page http://twitter.com/wallacelinden

It better be a major improvement over Katt "there was no ban. Fullstop" Linden, residents want someone they can talk to not a spindoctor.

Me, too. The 'and' construction is encouraging.

You know, if any reasonably intelligent person is hired to spend their entire day working on the Blog, that person won't be able to keep from noticing how basically unfunctional the Blog is. Of course if it's made clear to the new C.M. that keeping the nice job means "supporting the Blog", then the C.M. won't post anything acknowledging the fact that the Blog isn't a fraction as functional as these old neglected Forums.

The C.M. won't dare post it...but we'll know he knows.

I don't think they mean THESE "forums" when they say "the forums".

They've been calling those awful Jive blorums "the forums" in most cases.

Conversation Manager

I'm not a fan of the title. Perhaps it wasn't intended to convey "all conversations on this site WILL be MANAGED!!!"....but it kinda does convey that.

I'd prefer something more along the lines of "Community Conversation Liaison" or maybe "Resident/Linden Communications Facilitator" or maybe "Talk-Back Coordinator".

"Manager" seems more like someone we will have to report to than like someone who will make it easier for LL to understand what's on the minds of its customers.

Hm.

I get the sense of being an unruly child on the first day of school before the teacher walks in...

...is this a bad thing?

Post a remark about a LL action that's less than glowingly enthusiastic, and you get to sit in the corner wearing a dunce cap.

(And heck, they could enforce that...they can do anything to our avatars that they please...)

Looks liek my days in forum are numbered. No intention of getting banned for comments and ARs in this format. Gonna retreat to Zindra pretty soon.

I am not gonna use forums if there's gonna be a significant presence here. Means they'll follow us all over the place keeping tabs on us. Nope. Definitely not.

I think that's Brenda's job . . .

(RRRRRRRIIIPPPPPPPPP . . .)

The fact that this mentions both blogs AND forums leads me to believe that the remark is also in reference to THESE forums. Also encouraging is the suggestion that the new CM will function as a kind liaison with the residents generally: it implies that one of the jobs of the CM will be to carry our comments and concerns to LL directly. Of course, everything depends upon implementation, but there is some reason to be at least hopeful.

This.
I would be surprised if M even knows these forums exist.

That's what I thought too, although I hope they mean these forums, I doubt if they do. Either way, poor Wallace. What a job. :(

Oh, we are ALL such cynics!!!

Time will tell, but I am hopeful that this DOES represent a real attempt to improve communication with residents. it is certainly within that context M. seems to be making his remarks. And I still think that specifying both blogs AND forums seems to indicate these forums will be part of Wallace's mandate.

But, again, we'll see.

Jiggy: should this forum fall within the new CM's purview, this is not a reason to run away. We WANT LL to pay attention to what we are saying. And I don't think I've ever read anything by you here that would suggest you might be in "danger" from more scrutiny by an actual Linden. Assuming that this is going to be about "communicating" rather than merely "policing," it is a good thing, surely?
