For me personally Sky Designs, Relic, RW Designs,RH Wood Shed are among the best
...but one particular shop grabs my attention for the amount of detail in her antique furniture and particularly that she is probably not that well known around SL. (no fanfare!)

"Bygone Days" -Home of Classic Antiques and Finely crafted Furniture (Bygone 148,94,27) Creator is Jennie Moonflower.

Her Crystal chandeliers are second to none, undoubtedly the best on SL.....and i have searched far and wide for those. The detail and use of textures in her antique furniture
is simply stunning......it is a bit pricey, but if its quality that you're after you won't mind!.....you should include this shop & LM in your shortlist of furniture suppliers.

The two best, in my humble design-oriented mind are:

* Maximum Minimum
* CULT

Honorable Mention (for sheer volume): Hoffman

Up and coming designer: Glowbox, or course.

Cheers!

The Loft, Contempary Furnishings(run by my daughter and her husband, who both make thier furniture by hand, and is very prim and price concious)Musique, Xylo.

let me add this: its all in what You are lookin for. for kitchens sets? Ramos hands down, for living room sets? The Loft, and or CORN. want maximum style but have little prims? Hoffman or Contempary Furnishings. You dont have to go with one furniture store for all You needs. many compliment each other beautifully.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Like a few others have mentioned, The Loft, Tapioca Tastes, Habitat and Maximum Minimum are some of my favourites. Also mention Technique by Lord Humphrey (I'm biased as it's my rl partner) but he makes great furniture and houses.

This is proving a useful thread for me - so much furniture I've seen while shopping has been a) too expensive
b) *far* too many prims (140+ for a chair!!!)
c) fugly
d) scaled for giants (I'm over 6' SL, surely not that small?)
e) without poses - what good is a chair that says there's nowhere to sit?
f) has poses that fire you across the sim when you stand up
g) some combination of the above.

Not that I'm picky...

Check out the Cocomore Center of Applied Arts which is running a competition for furniture designs.

"On 12th of July 2007 in the Cocomore Center of Applied Arts the first "CO.CAA Design Award" event begins. In Second Life on the Cocomore Beach (Cocomore 125, 98, 22) the CO.CAA will be organising exhibitions of Second Life Design Objects on varying subjects. Each exhibition is in conjunction with a competition.

The theme of the first exhibition is: “Virtual Furniture”. The exhibits will be selected and assessed by a jury consisting of a team of internationally renowned designers: Fritz Frenkler, Jasper Morrison & James Irvine. The three best objects will be rewarded at the end with the CO.CAA Design Award."

ARGH I think my memory is fading... there's this one Victorian store that I love... it's got amazing kitchen stuff... I'm at work right now otherwise I'd post the name... anyone know what I'm talking about? It's got multiple floors, and one of the floors is all artwork and frames and stuff?

Second Tapioca Tastes. Good inbuilt animations (no poseballs! no poseball descriptions hanging in air!). Looks great, too.

multi chair
08-02-2007 10:56
From: Zaphod Kotobide
Just make certain that the Multi Chair by Timeless Prototype is included in this gallery. This would be an exception to the "more about design than scripting" idea, but nonetheless, one of the most innovative pieces of furniture I've seen in SL to date.

FYI ...Daffyd Llewelyn is the creator of the Multi-chair .. and he leased out the rights to Timeless.

Daffyd has new versions on his island and at my sales area in Hiaka .. he is an amazing scriptor.

This may not be the proper forum, but it is frequented by the most aware and astute people in SL, so I thought it was worth a shot. I'll also post in the wanted section.

We're opening a gallery to celebrate and bring together all the great work by SL furniture designers in one spot. I know a few, but have not explored every nook and cranny. If you know of someone you think is exceptional, please holler here or send me an IM, landmark or email me at rocky.rutabaga@yahoo.com

Chosen exhibitors will also have the option of selling their work at the museum.

We're looking for innovative work, furniture that can only happen in SL, and also great reproductions of RL designs. It's more about design than scripting.

No cost/rent to the selected exhibitors. No commissions will be taken by the museum staff or curator.

Thanks and come see us when we open!

I found a place the other night called Trinket with some absolutely awesome furniture pieces and accessories. Some a bit prim high, but beautiful nonetheless. Its the first place I ever saw outdoor furniture with shadows attached to the base.

J33bus Carlos. His furniture looks more like art than furniture. If you like curves, seek out his store.

My favorites:

The Loft 3
Scope Cleaver Designs

There are alot of talented modern furniture makers here as well, the problem is they use WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many prims. No idea where the heck they hide 60 prims in 1 chair. But I refuse to buy a chair that primmy. (Pet peeve!)

Personally, I don't like giving credit to anyone in sl who sells stuff as most of these people have giant sized egos to begin with thinking they're actual real life designers and acting the part.

Comments like these really bother me.

Why? Because regardless of what platform someone chooses to sell things, they are investing their real life time and talent into it. It takes real talent to run a successful shop here.

I myself have a small business in "RL" where I take on clients and interact with them, directly receiving real world cash. But guess what? I find more joy creating for this world we call second life. Rarely do I mention I am a business owner (Design work) in real life because that does NOT make me better then the guy who also has a successful shop in second life.

Just because someone chooses SL as an outlet to design, does not make them any less talented then someone hired by a company outside of second life.

From: someone

You see them tell you in their profiles not to bother them as their time is oh so valuable. Or that if you have a problem with their merchandise, tough luck. Please! Then they get upset when you tell them what you think of them and how they need to act.

Unfortunately some people do have incredibly bad attitudes like you describe above. These people I personally stay away from and tend never to step foot in their shop. If someone has that high of an ego off of what they have done they really do need a reality check and a lesson in customer service. The fact is though, many running businesses here do not exactly know how.

But none the less, remember that many of the people who are "well known" in SL have the talent to easily be scooped up by a real world company. But as I mentioned previously, I myself find more joy and satisfaction in creating here in second life then I do dialing a clients # and getting them a product.

I do understand your anger towards people like you mentioned, and sometimes I do have a little laugh at that attitude because for some if SL closed down tomorrow they would be "nobody". But not every designer in SL is like that, and I respect the real world time and talent people put into creating products for us here.

SL or RL, nobody, imho, should look down on people and walk around with an enormous ego. Whether its SL`s Lost thereian or RL`s Giorgio Armani. It`s never so much what they`ve done, but rather the fans of what they`ve done that make them successfull.

Town&Country

I agree with many of the choices here, but I also really like Town&Country Furniture by Ethan Habsburg. Clean lines and great textures. Very prim conservative too.

All y'all rock! I've been scouting stores and studios and galleries for days now and have found some amazing pieces. I hope to get the museum up and running by next weekend. If you are interested in upcoming events and such and, especially, the grand opening, join the Museum's official group: Furniture Museum of Second Life. See ya next week!

PS. We will always be on the lookout for new stuff, so even if you're a weekend chairman/woman or accidentally came up with one fantabulous ottoman, send me a line.
