Of cloudless climes and starry skies,
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meets in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.

I turn it off if I need to see very close, but I love it, the dusk and dawn are amazing on here too.

I dislike manipulating the day/night cycle. I even build at night and rez lights if needed.

SHE walks in beauty, like the night .... Pull me close, try and understand Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe Love is a banquet on which we feed Come on now try and understand The way I feel when I'm in your hands Take my hand come undercover They cant hurt you now, Cant hurt you now, cant hurt you now Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to lust Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to us - Patti Smith & Bruce Springsteen _____________________

From what I am reading it sounds like I need to tackle doing a custom day night cycle and replace the night with a windlight setting I call "Night You Can See In" if that is possible. That probably would solve my dilemma. I'll have to remember to back up everything as I am reluctant to tinker with the default.
Come to think of it, doing this might solve the harsh noon time shadows too. My apologies for leaving out the children of the night among you. That was not within the scope of what I was trying to find out -- which was, should I give myself permission to mess with the defaults. |

I have spent hours tuning and retuning the windlight settings to vaguely approximate the pre-windlight lighting with the "nighttime gamma" setting I prefer. It's really not possible, but it's the best I can do. Windlight is dramatic, but not realistic, unless you're used to an airless body with three suns red sun and have something fundamentally wrong with your vision.

Yes, it IS possible and far easier than I expected. It worked! Now I don't have to fiddle with Windlight settings as soon as I log in. |

I like the night , I like the stars and the moon and the colours of the sky...
However, I do have to switch to midday if Im building - it's just to hard (for me personally) to build in the dark. _____________________

I actually prefer the night. And, I like all of the cycles throughout the SL day. It adds a dynamic to our little world that's very welcome to me. (^_^)
I guess I don't like forcing my surroundings to fit my visual agenda. No forced daylight unless I'm in a building contest. No facelights on me. And, I don't mute. If you think about it, there's a chance that I might ACTUALLY enjoy Second Life. (^_^)y ... Though... It would be a bit more fun if we had moon cycles. =^-^= _____________________

I made far too many mistakes groping prims in the dark. Although I admire Brianna's perseverance, I deleted one too many pieces of flooring in the middle of the night: never mind cyber - the shame if my neighbours caught me floundering in the drink! It's based on the activity I pursue while in SL.
Midday is where I do most of my hunting, such as gold nuggets in the Gridwide hunts or watching someone build. The nighttime settings are great for the other uses, like hanging tight in a club. _____________________

Geeze- the night is fantastic, magical even- my one big complaint is the lindens seam to be afraid of the dark, seriously.
We do alot of helping on the help islands, the place all newbies come and they have turned the night time settings off- i mean really what the hell. Second big complaint- night isn't what it once was- it's not quite dark as it once was- that is a bother and a shame. |

*snort* I have to turn the gamma settings way up on my custom day cycle to get night as bright as it used to be, before Windlight. I agree. I can't see a thing at the default midnight setting, which is what prompted this thread. But now my default cycle has the gamma and ambient light boosted for midnight to 6:00am and it looks fine. Next I will work on finding a noon day setting that doesn't have all those harsh shadows on the cheek bones. It's fairly easy. |

A short night is totally annoying. Either 4 and 4 or 12 and 12. realism better.

depends on the build and the mood... I prefer night overall, but most builds aren't made for it and the gamma is horrible. so I generally wander around with forced daylight settings, unless the build is complimentary to night, or I'm taking pictures.
