I was just curious how many people find the nightime settings as annoying as I do and what you do about it. Do you just put up with it for an hour, quickly set your environment to a default day setting, or use a custom WindLight setting? Are you concerned that others will not see the world as you do when you stray from the default settings?

This is my first attempt at a poll, and frankly it's not very intuitive. If it doesn't work, no matter. I'm still curious about your opinions.

[In an eerie stroke of synchronicity another forum regular just asked a similar question in world as I was typing this.]

You forgot about "it depends".

If I am shopping or building, I will almost always force the setting to midday. However, if I am exploring or cuddling with someone or dancing in some spots, I will use sunrise, sunset, or midnight depending on which produces the best atmosphere.

Interesting question. In fact, I was logged in and was up on the roof of my skybox cottage at 4AM SLT today. I throught it was pretty cool to look around and see the other skyboxes all lit up, I saw lots of things that I've never noticed during daylight. I usually just switch over to midday if I need to do anything, though. Jackie

Honestly? The only thing that bothers me about the day/night cycle in SL is that it's uneven! It should be 4 hours daylight and 4 of night, not 3 of daylight and only 1 of night!

If It happens to be night, and I need to see better to build, it is trivial to set daylight to mid-day, for myself only.

But when I am socializing or roleplaying, I love the changing light levels, the sunsets, and the sunrises! I love sitting around a campfire with friends, lit by the glow of the fire.

It was only recently that someone reminded me of what I miss by not letting the day cycle. I have often set to Sunset if I am near water facing west, but this person mentioned how nice it is to actually let it cycle and watch the sun sink slowly.

I have been trying to remember this, but old habits do die hard.

if I'm trying to do something like building or shopping, I'll push to midday. otherwise, I'll leave it.

my little house is on the southeast corner of the sim. I choose it because I love the sunrises. turns everything pink. sunset is pretty, too, turning everything golden.

it really depends on what I'm doing.

I use my windlight day/night cycle settings all the time.....since a saved day cycle will become default....I never even see the the default viewer settings any more. But.....I also change my WL settings constantly since I take a lot of pics.
I don't worry about what others are seeing since SL is designed to be first person viewer modifiable......it's just not an issue for me.

I selected the "I am more interested in baked goods" option, because I am most interested in baked goods, especially when left lying about where I can reach them.

With my keen canine eyesight, nighttime generally doesn't trouble me. However, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I appreciate night more than others and wish to howl at the moon, other times I worry about vampires and other scary creatures of the night getting me.

You don't have one for "I love the night" :(

I've voted for the first one, but it doesn't come close - midday is boring unless I'm doing some fiddly building thing, whereas sunrise and sunset are beautiful, and the night-time experience can be awesome.

I have a day/night cycle set up, but I have it changed from the "default". My default are presets I set up in Windlight that take away the pesky sun and it's evil shadow casting. I think I also have lighting set up to "sun and moon only" as well. I just can't stand the shadows cast in Windlight.

Seconded. I love the night, and 'always-night' regions, and I wish the night was longer.

I generally switch to a windlight setting a few minutes after logging in regardless of the time of day. When I need it dark I switch to a night preset. Night is great when you have moody atmospheric light sources but if there aren't any it's just like lookin' at a black screen.

I always use the default day night cycle and agree with Ceera that night really should be longer. I'll force midday sometimes if I really need to see something to edit it right but return to the default immediately. I have my lights scripted to come on when the sun dips below the horizon and switch off at sunrise. I wonder if the always-midday people wonder why there's a bat or two flying around my place sometimes and sometimes not?

I actually don't mind it, and have often developed things specific to it. My Bay City store "changes" a bit at night, with the glow of the neon and lighting, an the cricket chirring. I also tend to time my fireworks shows to start at the darkest part of the SL night, and to go just before sunrise.

Unless I'm in sims made to be best viewed with the night time settings, i'll hit midday and leave it at that. if I take pics i'll mess about with the settings a bit anyways.

I use custom Windlight settings and I drag the night out a little longer than I should. I wish I could really stretch it more but I don't like to be too far out of synch with visitors. Also, like CarlCorey, my lighting is set to follow estate time so I don't like to bump around in the dark too much - I hate that zannnggg of pain that shoots up through my privates to bounce off my diaphragm when I stub my little toe on heavy objects.

I do a little bit of everything. I really like to let the day cycle just run, but I also like different Windlight skies I have saved. I have yet to make a custom day cycle, so if I switch to a Windlight sky, I lose the change, which I miss.

If I am out exploring I like to pick a Windlight sky setting that, I feel, enhances the mood of the build once I find someplace interesting. Default noon would be my least favorite. Once I start taking pictures I may click through a half dozen preset/saved skies, looking for the best picture, and then tweak it a little more.

I love the night! And I'm not even a vampire.

If I am building, I will sometimes force day. But the night is quiet. There's usually water about. Water in the moonlight is one of my most favorite things.

Night is for dancing. Night is for romance. Night is for quiet contemplation.

I love the night.

I would've select "it depends" if it was offered.

It depends where I'm shopping, I switch to midday if its too dark to see anything.
It depends when I am having a romantic evening, I switch to night.
When we go to bed and our sim is still in daylight, I switch to night.
It depends if I am attending a special event and it calls for me to switch to night.
