I'm not ready to buy land yet but I want a place to set as home, entertain, and work in peace. I'm thinking of renting but I've read some horror stories here. Can any of you point me to good places to rent and landlords to avoid?
Thanks in advance S

I believe there is a forum here where people post land they have for rent.

From: Screwtape Foulsbane And I have read it. I'm just looking for advice on who is a good landlord and who is not. The level of risk is low with weekly rentals. Even if you run into a bad landlord, your potential loss is small, and it's easy to move on and find another place. Monthly rental (or "purchase" on private estates carries a bit more risk, but the vast majority of estate owners are also good landlords. You can search this forum and find the names of many very reputable private estate owners. WHAT to rent is more of a problem. You can rent bare land, which is lots of fun if you want to hone your building skills. Or you can rent a pre-built furnished home, if you want a nice place to live right away. The tradeoff is usually the number of prims that you'll get with your property.

Renting...
02-25-2008 09:13
I've rented homes/apts in 5 separate sims so far. One place I rented then realized the same day that it wasn't going to work for me due to lots of lag and being able to get guests in without ridiculous security issues. The sim owner would not refund me my money but it was only a weeks rent...not too bad. Besides that, haven't had any problems whatsoever and have made some great friends besides. I would suggest starting off by paying only one weeks rent and see how that goes before you advance pay past that. Then you won't be out so much if it doesn't work out.

My landlord is Ellen Spark, I've known her for over a year now. I moved into the first sim she bought (was just me and her ) and now she has 5. Her prices are good, prim quota is awesom and everyone seems happy.

I would recommend Belladonna of Wren estates. I rented land with them for a months last year and it was a great experience. Never any issues about money and always very accommodating.

I've rented everything from a small apartment with a 128 prim allowance to a 2-bedroom home in a condo and a large beach-front home. These were all in "community" type sims. My last two experiences have been renting land on the mainland and placing a home in the sky. In all of the above places I've never had one bit of problems and excellent landlords. /waves to current landlord Alt Aabye

Excellent! Another opportunity to shamelessly promote my own mainland rental business, one of the biggest in SL. Check out my shop at Steamboat (200, 83) for a sample of about 40 available parcels out of the 100 or so we have.

Any of Avion Raymaker's properties if you want mainland, or Sarah Nerd, Wildefire Walcott or Darien Caldwell if you are interested in Estate land.

I would recommend Bird Lilliehook. My partner and I have been renting from her for some time now. She's an awesome landlord, reasonable rents and excellent prim allowance. Also, should you have a problem, all you need do is whistle and she magically appears! (of course that is if she's online which she almost always is).

Shameless Self Promotion
02-25-2008 23:51
Hello. I'll shamelessly add our mainland rental community here. It's not for everyone, but we're furry and new resident friendly -- we respect people's privacy but enjoy when they come out to play. We don't have a lot of rentals but they are themed. Along with a furnished (or not, as you wish) home we have gardens and more. We also have a huge play and building area (3 build areas actually) if you are a builder. At the moment we have a single room in a neko boarding house , and I think a Victorian house is coming up for availability. IM me in world if you'd like a notecard. /shameless self promotion But very seriously... recommendations are important in SL rentals. You've got lots of great leads here in this thread. Finding a place that is compatible with you is what's really important. Some places are super private, others very busy, and so on. What do you want? Then go find it Try a few places out. Good luck!

I've a large plot that I'm more than happy for people to use. It's open to the public but is usually empty if you were wanting some privacy. There's a fully equipped large house, then lots of areas to relax with friends. Anyone's welcome to use it.
I'm unable to log in right now but I think there's a direct tp in my picks. If not, send me an IM in-world and i'll send you a landmark.

I guess it all depends on what you want to rent. For well landscaped sims where you can either rent a parcel, or rent a house, many names were given already, and some good ones too. Usually you pay a bit more, but get a bit more as well. Just make sure wether you want commercial or residential, wherever you going to rent.
If you just want a parcel of land, and want it cheap, I would recommend my own landlord Ecstacy Realty. At a price of 2 linden a square meter a month I think its very reasonable, and you dont pay a dime upfront. Monthly payments, not weekly. Full ownership of your parcel.
@Eazel: Are you sure about that price? thats under cost price per square meter, if I am not wrong.
Greetings Marcel

You can rent a cheap apartment, or something bigger with space to build. If you rent a place with a structure on it, take care to know whether or not the structure is included in your prim limit. e.g., that 1024 lot with the 40 prim house and a 233 prim limit really gives you 193 prims. Some landlords do not do this and provide the extra prims from other land that they hold.

Faith Homes. As been suggested it's all down to what you want. A fully furnished property but not bothered about Prims or empty space with loads of Prims. The main thing good landlords offer is someone to respond to your calls quickly. I've heard of people renting from rent boxes and not being able to get into the property and not being able to get any response from the Landlords etc. Must say (this is my shameless plug) that we manage to be able to offer both but my Bosslady is so good at deccorating homes and landscaping that we find our tenants hardly use their Prim allowance (mind you one dropped necklace can bugger the whole thing up!!). And best of all, people stay!!! We have a main office but sometimes theres not much to show someone because as soon as someone see's one of our homes they seem to rent and then stay for ages. I must find out how long our longest tenant has been with us but it must be several months now!!! Another thing is flexability. Someone may be staying in one of our beach homes but then a skyhome comes free and they want to try it. It can all be sorted. OH and I have to say we offer proper skyhomes not just boxes. We call them our Venetians and they have balconies and pools and Proper Naughty beds LOL We do have a few empties at the moment. Plug over I supose the best way especially if it's going to cost you a lot of money or you want to invest a lot of time in your home ask the other tenants what sort of experience they have had with that particular landlord. Good luck. It's fun renting in SL nice to have somewhere to go hide from both RL and sometimes even SL LOL LOL
