So I just had a thought...

If you donate tier to a group, the group gets a 10% tier bonus.
LL's official info on starting a group is "first create an Alt to protect your group from closing."
LL is always pushing its "total number of signups" as a marketing tool.

Is the 10% bonus really just a tool to artificially inflate numbers?

Considering that most groups probably aren't groups at all, you could be onto something!

I mean a group of you and your alt, isn't really what the group process was designed for.

You know too much and you talked! Now you're gonna get whacked! No, wait. That would lower their numbers. Never mind. Carry on...

There are many theories we don't know yet. Where do prims come from? Who are those Linden people dressed up as nights templars? Why do they worship that avatar named Philip?

I don't know, but I still go on with my every day Second Life.

no it was originally to inflate the number of paid accounts (back when you had to pay for them all)

Nope. I read somewhere recently there was an SL recreation of Dealey Plaza in SL. I wonder if they are getting Dan Linden to play JFK....

There are many theories we don't know yet.

I always figured most of the bigger business's in SL where owned by Linden alts. Seems to me that they would have the upper hand in everything and be able to use their privileged info and abilities to change the searches, not pay for land, uploads, what have you, to their advantage. Somewhat like legal insider information.

If one had the power, one could start a business with free land and uploads, change the search to one's advantage, even go as far as take other business's off the search and claim technical issues (this happens to me often)

Really, besides strong ethics *rolls eyes*, what would stop them from this?

Is there a Freemason lodge in SL?

Why should they go to all the work? They own the Lindendollar presses.

hmmm.... work for hours making content and set up a shop, or hit the $ button.... decisions, decisions....

I expect that most LL employees would, on the whole, prefer not to be sacked. That, in my opinion, would be a strong motivation for not doing this.

If it is, indeed, against company policy. Or maybe it's one of the company perks...

It used to be against company policy for Lindens to run in-world businesses, but that was changed.

However, I don't believe that many of the big businesses in SL _are_ run by Lindens. The Lindens do have an interest in favouring those big businesses, though, because they pay a lot of tier, and they cause a lot of people to convert US$ to L$, and they're unlikely to leave as long as they are making a profit even if SL crashes five times an hour. :)

The "big-businesses-are-in-league-with-Lindens" argument is almost as old as SL itself. It used to be called the FIC. It doesn't need to come back! :)

However, anyone who has business of the sort to be able to affor the tier would turn a profit for LL - and the more big businesses, the more profit. Ergo, it would stand to benefit LL more to support ALL businesses.

And I think that's what ideally they want to do - but it's difficult to support ALL businesses when they are competing with each other.

No it's not. They only really need to do one thing.

Perhaps, but didn't they also drop the required minimum membership from 3 to 2?

(and I am very happy for that 10% bonus tier, and have relied on it for years. :)

I hear that the Lindens are actually the descendents of the survivors of Atlantis.

and they're lizards.

And so is the Queen.
