But darkness is not scary... not in game, not in RL. Darkness is a wonderful moment of peace and rest.
I often take my dogs out a walk late in the evening... when all is dark and peaceful. Such a good moment to find balance again and to find rest.

What you may be referring to is the process of "night" falling in SL. It will gradually darken over a period of 10 - 15 minutes (this happens roughly every two hours or so.) As Sweet Primrose mentioned, you can force daylight and not ever go into night. You can also control your night brightness settings in Preferences.
