Half the time its too dark to see anything and you have to use a hot-key fix (crtl+shift+y) to put the gamma setting back to normal.
Does anybody know if the is permanent setting to fix the gamma problem will SL?
And why have they not fixed it after all this time - random gamma settings every few minutes - its stupid!?

In SL there is a day/night cycle. You can "force" a particular setting anywhere. Go up to "World" at the top and near the bottom of the menu is a setting to do this. "Sunset" generally looks nice.

What you may be referring to is the process of "night" falling in SL. It will gradually darken over a period of 10 - 15 minutes (this happens roughly every two hours or so.) As Sweet Primrose mentioned, you can force daylight and not ever go into night. You can also control your night brightness settings in Preferences.

In SL, the darkness is not random, it changes gradually over a 4 hour cycle to simulate day and night.
Dawn and dusk are particularly nice to watch.
As Sweet Primrose says, you can always over ride this 'natural' order of things with the menu.

You can change the gamma settings for nighttime yourself, in preferences.
Like you, I often force the sun to noon, even though I've adjusted preferences to make nighttime fairly bright. But there are often times when it's nice to have the dusk or nightime lighting, especially for romantic sunsets. So this is a feature, not a bug.

The SL day: light for 4 hours and dark for 2 hours.

From: Kidd Krasner You can change the gamma settings for nighttime yourself, in preferences. Just noting that there are TWO settings (names might be slightly different)... GAMMA - controls the brightness of the entire client, including user interface elements like the menu and windows. NIGHTTIME BRIGHTNESS - makes nighttime look like there is a really bright moon out. ----- Adjusting nighttime brightness sounds like what you want, because you already feel daytime is bright enough (that's what you've been forcing with ctrl-shift-y). Be VERY careful adjusting the GAMMA settings. It is ridiculously easy to accidently set it so bright that the entire client is just a mess of white... including the preferences window, making it impossible to change back (unless you can click on exactly the right places purely from memory).

Idiotic nonsense - day and night = can see and can't see.
It's not virtual reality or even a game .......... everybody hates everybody else's guts in SL and are just in it to make money by thieving and selling rubbish.
Day and night - what a load of cow clap.

if i had the ability i'd make every parcel on sl nightime 23 hours a day (for everybody!). local lighting makes nightime so much sexier than the garish daytime.

I just wish we had in inworld clock that showed the time relative to the sun settings. I know that it would be running about 6 time faster than real time, but if it only showed the time by the hour I think it would be great orient ones self to the local setting when you log on. Anyone see this as scripting opportunity for a new product? (The ideas free if anyone wants it)

Day and night - what a load of cow clap. I must be a nobody then because SL keeps filling me with a sense of wonder, and I've been losing money in my business for almost a year now... and the only thing I've ever stolen in SL is a kiss or a hug.

From: YallY Jun Idiotic nonsense - day and night = can see and can't see. [...] Day and night - what a load of cow clap. Having day and night is idiotic nonsense? What exactly were you expecting from a virtual reality? From: someone It's not virtual reality or even a game .......... everybody hates everybody else's guts in SL and are just in it to make money by thieving and selling rubbish. What an utterly bizarre thing to say after we, a bunch of total strangers, just helped you. You had the option to be thankful and appreciative, in the process making friends here with some very nice, knowledgeable, funny, and generous people. Instead, you just spewed hate and nonsense. If this is how you normally react to kindness, it isn't surprising that you are having trouble getting people to like you.

Day and night - what a load of cow clap. What Ava said. Why did you even bother to post??? Just to p*** off other people? Maybe SL isn't the right place for you- or don't you have dark nights at home?

I can scarcely believe this guy's response, or credit that such people actually exist. Last night, I had an utterly delightful time playing a treasure hunt game with a bunch of little kids, and young-at-heart adults. It gave me a sense of childlike excitement and joy I had almost forgotten. And then this...ah, utter sourpuss...comes along to try and drag me back to the Dark Side. Away to the Outer Darkness with you, I say. Begone!

From: Lindal Kidd Away to the Outer Darkness with you, I say. Begone! But darkness is not scary... not in game, not in RL. Darkness is a wonderful moment of peace and rest. I often take my dogs out a walk late in the evening... when all is dark and peaceful. Such a good moment to find balance again and to find rest. Morwen.
