And sell more copies of SLut . . .

Pep ( . . . on the back of his crusading/investigative journalism.)

PS Jumpy is the only one I know of who thinks he is a celebrity; did he actually perpetrate the dastardly act, then out himself, as a marketing coup?

Looks like what's-his-name is a wee bit jealous. So pitiful to resort to groveling in public that way....someone please tell the poor man he's out of his league competing with Jumpy for the ladies' attention.

Hey Relektra....I tried that approach already....back off, sister.

It seemed interesting, less like a smut mag and more like a trash gossip paper LOL

either way, will kills the boredom for awhile. :)

so do tell, is it available in an in world easily viewable version?

I thought Emilia Redgrave left SL in 2008, after an entire release of new skins were ripped off by Bonnie Arado? (I will name the name because the account is deleted). Redgraves has been a target of rippers for a long time, sigh.

But, is it possible for someone to stand right beside you and rip off your skin that you are wearing? How long does it take?
It takes moments. In fact, to clone an avatar you don't even have to learn how to use a texture capture program. As of last year, more than one rather inexpensive commercially available bot clients had "clone <avatar name>" as a command. What they will get is a completely baked clone from your video card - they will not get just the skin texture unless you are nude, and then, aren't there quality issues? Someone here more knowledgable than I can probably say. I haven't checked for a long time to see if these clients were still around.

When you are in the view of other avatars, the UUIDs of all the textures making up your outfit are made available. Others can grab those UUIDs instantly and download the textures at their leisure.

The Greenlife Emerald viewer has a little feature that turns off the full líst of textures, with that turned on others can only get your baked avatar. Since we are usually wearing clothes of some sort, this makes it a lot harder to grab an intact skin without going out and buying one, or hanging out somewhere with a lot of naked avatars :p

Starting with viewer 1.24, that will be the standard even in the LL version, those extra textures will no longer be made available to others (the extra textures are there to support a backup baking feature that no longer exists in 1.23). That will break the OpenGL hackery too, only the baked version will be out there most of the time.

That clone trick is a little different, no actual texture copying happens. Instead, the program grabs the UUID list from another avatar and attaches it to your own, in effect telling everyone else in view "oh, um, I'm wearing what she's wearing, that's the ticket!".

There's really no protection from viewers to hide skins with clothes on top, since GLIntercept will grab EVERYTHING or you can place filters for size, type, etc, and it filters it all into a folder. It's actually pretty wild.

I used the OpenGL tools loooong before I had heard of second life when I did work for a game company we used GLtrace, GLdevil, GLintercept for pulling off and sorting zone skin/sculptmaps/textures and sort via folder. No matter how many layers on top of a creation you grabbed all layers and filtered them out with the openGL toolset.

Now the same tools do exist for directx but I believe if they moved from an opengl setup to directx it would help security some, at least for a while hehe. Since those tools are usually a little more propietary. But as we all know if someone wants it they will get it.

Just an annoyance to put up with.

another way is do how lot of legal movies and mp3's are going with DRM encoded onto the file. Use DRM encoded textures, but that would really add more overhead and lag which at the moment would be a bit stupid to try.

Cool.. cutting down on the seperate textures will make inworld UUID texture swiping pretty hard. That's a good thing. This won't affect the functionality of the one's that only need a nude bake though.

What I think Viktoria meant is that the individual skin and clothes textures that make up the baked one wont be stored anymore, so they wont be available for gli to grab.

That is a mistaken notion. That currently works only because most current viewers put the component textures out there on the wire. Emerald, and future LL viewers, won't be putting the unbaked textures out there in the first place, so they won't be on the wire for anyone but the wearer to grab. It's not magic, nothing more than what different versions of viewer software deliberately put out there.

Just for sake of argument I tested both viewerrs and with my own skin I made as an example I did everything to try and protect and was able to download all layers with GLIntercept..

try again

no i get what ya discussing, people that lie and claim their viewer or certain trick to stop copiers are liars. plain and simple. people need to weed through the liars and show people what actually happens so they will know and have knowledge of how things work.

50% of the time people scream COPYBOT, is b.s. when glintercept can copy any skin layers, clothing layers, can copy original sculpty maps, etc.

everyone has this omg copybot attitude, but knowledge is power. Im sick of everyone's urban legends and how they have no clue how something works. The claim that some knock off viewer can protect you is the biggest laugh ever.

The only way to help combat it is Linden to ban all 3rd party viewers, start instituting DRM content. Course as I explained DRM at this stage would cause more lag that needed. So it's just going to be a neccessary evil to put up with.

but yea, stop believing the lies and urban legends, download the program and try it on your own stuff and learn how something works before making claims that aren't true.

...everyone has this omg copybot attitude...

The term "copybot" has morphed from meaning a specific piece of software to meaning anything that can take an in-world asset that you don't have full perms to and give you enough info to recreate it with full perms. With the viewer being open source for some time now, there's no reason to even involve bots any more.

I still use the term 'copybot' though because it's easier to say.

Wasn't Viktoria hinting that the images already being in your inv and/or HD might affect results?

Try it on a willing guinea pig wearing a freebie skin you don't own, maybe.
