SL a ATT wannabe.... perhaps LL is just making it easier to have the extreme adult and violent content to just use voice and ignore Ursula

I think that number is as reliable as the "umpity-million residents" number, and could well include everyone who had it on, but does not or can not use it. Many in the WAs, for example, have it on by default and do not even realize it. I keep it on to hear what is being said around me, but opt to only get on mic very rarely.

Following up on myself. Looks like the voice numbers don't apply when it is just me up in the skybox, but voice is on. It does apply when two people have voice enabled and are in the same location. What I don't know is if one of those two have to be talking during that time, or just enabled.

I have enabled voice in the presence of people talking at least four times in the past two years. Does that mean they're counting me as a voice user?

No, they are counting you as four voice users.

Well it works fine, I'm not sure who most of us would give our numbers to, I mean if your partner or someone needs to call you in Second Life it might be a hint you're spending too much time here!

It's just another concession to codgers:

"Text? Bah! Back in the day, we had to use *voice*. Uphill. Both ways. In the snow."

A sorta answer...

From: http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2009/05/listening-tour.html
No, he said, if you're in Second Life with your microphone on, the ambient background noise and your breathing isn't counted as voice usage. (Many have speculated this was the case.) In fact, he continued, if you were standing alone in SL, talking to yourself, that wouldn't count as a minute either. "In order for a voice minute to be counted," as he put it, "there has to be a listener." Minutes are calculated when a Resident is in a local or direct active voice channel, talking or listening.

So it would seem so, Argent.

I'm not a big fan of voice and can count on one hand the number of times I've used it but I did check out the AvaLine service just for fun. A couple of things folks might want to keep in mind:

- seems that once you get your access extension number, write it down. After navigating away from the page and then going back to that avaline management page, i didn't seem to be able to see what my current extension number was, so you'll have get another one.
- i called myself to check it out and you should be aware that the rl caller's number shows up in the IM tab if you are at all concerned about your privacy. Using caller id blocking (*67 in my area) before calling the listed access phone numbers does work from having your rl number showing up in the receiver's IM window.

interesting about the number showing up, thank you for that info (they should probably disclose that as well)

As for the access extension number not showing up, mine does when I go back, I just use the same link to get there as I did to first get it (the manage your avaline link)

hmmm weird, i do have the option to delete my extension number but there is nothing above it under the status, expires stuff. tried with both firefox and ie. oh well, i don't really care as i'll never really use it lol but i did save it on my notes page of my profile.

That's what I think, and that's what I will think even if someone from Linden Lab says no, unless they present evidence to support their claim that would be at least strong enough to use in court. The motive for lying, making the option seem so much more popular than it really is, seems quite powerful to me. I also wouldn't put much stock in a denial because many answers from LL don't seem to quite fit the question.

If there are that many minutes spent talking, and the content is like most of what I've heard, that's kind of disturbing.

They are adding features to the core product. It's just that the core product is changing. This one more little slice of RL being shoehorned in to SL. I'm sure it's useful to some people, but probably not as many that LL thinks. After all they say in the blog that 50% of residents use voice every day, I doubt the accuracy of that number.

LL counts voice minutes by the number of minutes that avatars spend logged into SL with voice enabled, whether or not the avatars actually say or hear anything. The viewer now ships with voice turned on by default, so a lot of residents are racking up voice minutes without even knowing it; some of them probably don't even have microphones plugged into their computers.

WOW.

That is a serious risk to 'disclosure' let alone possibly to personal safety. (Reverse lookup, anyone?)

What is Linden Labs thinking with that little tidbit. Honestly?

"Hey newbie Jane...do me a favor. Help me test out LL's new voice service...it's totally safe. Promise."

Reverse lookup..."Hi! Nice to meet you!"

The odd thing is, they announced it was live about 2 weeks ago, then abruptly pulled the blog post. I guess there was a last minute problem.
