Gigaom has a post saying there's new voice services coming from LL. http://gigaom.com/2009/05/19/second-life-takes-aim-at-skype/"the company will also announce a battery of voice services usable outside SL, including “AvaLine,” which enables mobile phone-to-avatar calling."

weird, the news release is dated april 30'th and says at the end....
AvaLine marks the first time a Resident can communicate with a non-Second Life user within Second Life. Linden Lab is launching a beta-testing program today with the full service launching later in Q3.

Geeze...I already have more IMs and chat than I can handle. Why would I want to take calls from RL TOO?

From: Brenda Connolly Blech. Here come the telemarketers. Can I interest you in a demonstration of our fine vinyl windows and doors? I can schedule a sales associate to visit your home next Tuesday.

OMG. You guys are right. I bet the Do Not Call Registry doesn't apply to internet voice calls.
Crap.

I'd heard some rumors of this a day or two ago. On one hand, it sounds like some great enhancements. On the other... hey, how about adding new features and services to the *core product* - this whole 3D virtual world thing, ya know?

It's just that the core product is changing. This one more little slice of RL being shoehorned in to SL. I'm sure it's useful to some people, but probably not as many that LL thinks. After all they say in the blog that 50% of residents use voice every day, I doubt the accuracy of that number.

Glad I don't use voice.
HOW ABOUT AN IM-XMPP GATEWAY?
What's wrong with it? It would be easy, efficient, portable, compatible with everything, cheap to implement, and provide a much better solution than the "SLIM" abomination.

From: Brenda Connolly After all they say in the blog that 50% of residents use voice every day, I doubt the accuracy of that number. I think that number is as reliable as the "umpity-million residents" number, and could well include everyone who had it on, but does not or can not use it. Many in the WAs, for example, have it on by default and do not even realize it. I keep it on to hear what is being said around me, but opt to only get on mic very rarely.

I don't want more voice. Now if LL could work out how to do RL TP requests...*that* is a project I could get behind.

you guys make it sound like they are forcing you to use this new voice feature... (I remember all the same comments when they came out with voice, and windlight.. and all the other newness heh)
I just finished reading through the info, and first we have to activatly request a number, then we must give that number to people to be able to call us, along with the RL number they have to call to be able to route to our number.
So no telemarketers no unwanted calls, nothing.. just do not get a number, and if you do... don't give it to anyone heh

AvaLine is free of charge for this limited public beta of 1,000 phone numbers and access codes. We plan to charge a small amount for this feature in the future." https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=6316

From: Melita Magic Great, now my avatar is going to run up a huge phone bill. Well a few localities are going to get a good deal, I get free national calls on the weekend and they have a London number so it shouldn't be bad at all. If you're in the UK remember that this: # is also a pound sign, so if you're looking to leave a voicemail when the recorded voice tells you to press the pound sign don't go looking for this: £

But it is a case of LL waving some big shiny in front of people saying "Oohh look what we are giving you guys", which may be useful, but is hardly something most users can't live without, while other more pressing issues get ignored. It's a distraction, sort of like when the President tells us we are getting $6 more a week in our paycheck while your Governor takes $10 a week more from you. And it also shows LL's refocusing on business oriented uses for SL, the Corporate crowd who have earpieces permanently attached to their heads, and panic when no bars come up on the cell phone screens
