Hi, I have been thinking about the old General Discussion part of the forums ever since the last few threads in regards to the undead thread, which is a GD on it's own.
Anywho, this poll is just to see how many folks would want the GD back. I know I would like to see it come back.
(there is no pie option or any of that silliness, I am seriously looking for serious answers, as I am thinking of petitioning them to bring it back, can't hurt to try)

I think this forum is a fait accompli general discussion to the vexation of many. I would very much like to have general discussion somewhere, but one that is at least as polite as these forums usually are -- not a wild west trollfest. [Edit - so I voted yes.]

I voted yes... I think the reason is pretty obvious if you look down at the archived GD.

Ok, I guess I wasn't here when General Discussion was around, but I guess I don't really see the big deal. So what happens if someone starts an "Undying Thread" in general discussion?

From: Travis Steamer Ok, I guess I wasn't here when General Discussion was around, but I guess I don't really see the big deal. So what happens if someone starts an "Undying Thread" in general discussion? It keeps going? Difference is that the Undying Thread would be more welcome in such an environment. General Discussion would be just for that, discussion, while Resident Answers would be for people to actually ask questions. It's my hope there'd be a bit less heckling in RA if there was a GD.

I voted no.
I was never a member when the general discussion forum was still around, and I don't see a need for it. The Resident Answers is helpful, and offers a little bit of off topic in various threads (Old and new), and seems to serve the purpose well, in my opinion.
I feel like a General Discussion forum would distract people from RA, and answers would be slower in coming, or lacking entirely occasionally. As is, because RA acts as a pseudo-GD forum at times, those who are just conversing may also see questions they can answer, which is nice for both the OP and the person with the answers (At least, I for one would like answering them.)

My serious answer is no.
general discussion needs are already being met by the current undying thread(s?)
tempest in a teapot issue, bored now

Yes, yes and yes again - but don't kill the undying thread though - not yet anyway. The problem with the undying thread for general discussion is that you can only really discuss the last one or two subjects mentioned on the thread.

YES.
I would love to see the community expanded in this direction and fully agree with Westons sentiment regarding trolls.

Just move the undying thread to the GD. Don't close it! But, yes, a new GD would have to be moderated, something which LL seems to shy away from. Heck, I have no experience moderating, but I'd gladly join the ranks of resident mods if I could get General Discussions back!

Same here. Also, I am a member of three other non-SL related forums and I never read the General Discussion areas. When I go to a forum it's for a specific answer or topic so I would hate to miss the quips and such that are part of the current RA.

Yes, bring back General Discussion.
The thing that LL refuses to acknowledge about how Forums work is that inevitably, a portion of the users of that forum will consider it a type of "community", and will want to share off-topic conversations among each other. Notices of birthdays, deaths, triumphs, failures, or just humor and odd events in the real world that they think are of interest. If you have a "General Discussion" forum, that is where that sort of community chatter should go.
But if you try to gag and mute such chatter, the users WILL find somewhere to do it anyway. It's Human nature. So, we have a fair porton of that in Resident Answers, and some other bits scattered throughout the rest of the forums.
Bettr to have a single, approved place for it, and only moderate that for trolls and flames, and maybe to prohibit blatant advertising. Libel and "naming names" in a accusatory way falls under moderating flames and trolls.
