Users getting other Users IP adresses

hi all

i have a good freind that is being stalked in SL and she thinks that this stalker
can tell what her IP adress is with them both only in SL .

i am pretty sure this cant be done but i would like to be able to
tell my freind it cant for sure for her peace of mind, so can this be done in anyway at all
if you dont have any contact outside of SL ?

can scripted huds do this or maybe external addon programs or modified viewers ?

Media connecting to a private, hacked video server, yes

It IS possible to get the IP address from whatever media servers are being used on a particular parcel/sim IF he has access to them, and your friend plays the media stream while on the parcel. Both music and video streams are a direct connection from the residents computer to whatever web server is named in the about land dialog as the host for that type of media. Her IP would show as connected in the server logs.

FYI - An IP address is almost totally useless for tracking purposes, especially in SL where the LL servers mask her IP and act as a proxy between residents. If she is truly being stalked/harrassed then have her file an abuse report ASAP. Then have her check for scripted items she may be wearing that he might have been able to edit or he gave to her. THAT WOULD let someone follow her around SL. Might also check for scripted follower spies, or stationary spies that might be rezzed nearby. The way to lose a follower is to TP twice as quick as you can, preferrably to an isolated island, or logoff and login to a different region.

Whoo people who claim to have your IP. So.....they might even have your IP adress. relax!

Your IP can be related to the region you live in. And which provider you have.
That's all, and all that is pretty much a public domain. Everybody's WAN IP is technically visible.

If they want to have your adress, they need to hack the provider you have, and relate your IP to your account, which holds your billing and delivery adress.

So the really smart hacker might get your adress.

I could easily get your IP address if i was so inclined but there is not allot I could do with it other than determine the general area where you live. Not like the good old days on IRC where you could capture someones IP and then nuke them off of the server if they annoyed you.

furthermore, ofcourse you can file a complaint at LL.

But Linden Labs is not really responsible for people blackmailing you using your private data.
This is a federal crime, and simply file such complaints at your local police office, with the SL username of the one doing this, and the logs to proof it.

LL will be contacted by the police, and they will have to deliver the personal data of this user.

Get things serious and you will visit your blackmailer in court, watch him/her cry. Then laugh last as you should.

Been there done that, offending someone online is just as much as a crime as offline. I'm glad this law exists.

Huh, my IP is a LAAARRRGE and very rural area, including two smallish towns. Good luck getting more specific.

I perform East Russian methods to do that. They aren't pretty, neither are stalkers.

To be back on topic, Trolls and people with a SL only, like "String" is, annoy me the most, and enjoy terrorizing communities.

Don't be afraid to show your IP. It's useless to stalk with.

My IP number will lead you to my ISP who is located in Amsterdam... while I live on the other side of the country on the country side...

Audio and Video streams in sl are not passed through LL's servers, if they were it would create even more network issues than already exist. If you play an audio or video stream in sl then the person owning the server they are playing from will have logs indicating what ip addresses connected to their streams, the same thing happens if you use programs like iTunes or Winamp to play streaming media. If you don't want your ip address obtained for some reason you have the option within sl to disable audio and video streaming.

It's the same with HTML content so for instance, if you loaded the html in a web profile that would log your ip address as well, which again is no different than what happens if you use Internet Explorer or Safari to browse web pages. This possibility is the reason profile web pages do not load automatically by default.

Declaring that this somehow makes SL insecure is just not correct in my opinion, if it were you would have to say the same for every web browser or program capable of playing streaming audio or video as well. Do you believe that people who own the servers that provide content should not have the ability to log the ip addresses of people that connect to them?

Bottom line, nothing can beat social engineering. It's all too easy to make an alt, befriend the target, get gobs of info or whatever. But at the end of the day, it's a colossal waste of time. Sort of like arguing with a crazy person. You 'win' but so what? In the end, they won more than you did. They got all sorts of personal attention (negative though it may be), your time, your attention, and felt important! Better to just ignore and keep moving forward.

This may sound really boring to those with an itch to scratch, but the true 'win' is eject/ban/mute. The less minutes of your life spent dealing with stupidity is the true victory. If there were any #1 secret to success I'd share - first or second life - it's this. Don't waste time fighting idiots. Just choose your best options and act on them. Pretty soon the idiots will be a small dot in your rear view mirror as you are on to bigger and better things.

That's why I don't vote or have anything at all to do with politicians . . .
