This might be a strange topic, and Im sorry if it offends anyone. Last night, my SL ex's cousin got on his av and asked me some questions about him. Asked if he'd acted depressed, or talked about "dark" things. Then told me he'd shot himself. What a shock! I mean, I sure wasn't expecting that! Cried my eyes out for awhile, then started thinking. This could be another one of "his" tricks. He was good at making himself dissapear with some kind of drama. A couple other ppl that know him, think it could be a trick, also. Has anyone ever known someone who did this in SL? Do ppl play dirty tricks like this? Or am i just so paranoid, Im not seeing the truth for what it is? Is there any way you can find out if someone has truly passed on? I mean I dont know much of his rl info, other than the state he lived in.

Wouldn't be the first time someone's gone to bizarre extremes for emotional blackmail.

done it in the past? would do it in the future

annonimity? why believe anyone?

had it once with the drama of an car accident, just said "i hope he sufferd alot", safe to say he went baserk and just told him to stfu and f`off

that people believe all the BS that is said to them is amazingly stupid, no wonder the best payed doctor is a shrink...

Wow! I would hate to think that people would play this type of trick on someone. I vaguely remember a thread not too long ago regarding something like this, where some people have claimed death when in fact they are alive and well. Keep in mind though that some people are just cruel like that regardless, but at the same time, it could have really happened. I don't know how you could find out the truth if you don't know much about his RL, but it looks like talking to friends and such that know him in-world is a good start. I hope things start looking up for you, it's difficult dealing with death of someone you care about.....whether it's real or not, at this point it's real for you. I wish I could help more......

Yummi,
you just have to ask yourself why in the world (and how?) would someone's cousin log into SL to ask these questions. How would his 'cousin' even know about you or your name in SL. And why would he care about your impressions on your ex (being depressed/dark) especially since he was dead by then.

Yes, I did ask him that, he said he'd watched him play before, since he lived in the apartment upstairs, and that he had mentioned me. And I also wondered why in the world, he'd even GET on sl! If my cousin had shot himself in the head, I sure wouldnt care about getting on a game to find out how he had reacted! But I know ppl can get really close here, and who knows.

True. Usually people do the suicide/death thing over the internet for sympathy or because they want to disappear.

I used to play a game called Word Riot with a group of regulars & friends on pogo.com There was a particular member there who I believe said he was around 12-16 years old and said he had some kind of terminal illness. Some days he would talk about this illness in detail and how it affected his gameplay; he also mentioned how he lived with his mom who he loved and she took care of him. We all felt bad for him, gave him words of encouragement, bent the rules of the game for him; some people wrote him poetry...basically he was given special treatment and moral support because we all felt so bad for him.

Well, you can guess where this is going based on the context of the thread. One day he logged into the forums associated with the game and told us all it was a lie; he laughed at us all and told us we were all very gullible and stupid for believing him. Everyone was shocked by this, and of all of my internet experiences, this one taught me to take things at face value on the net until proven otherwise while trying my best not to get emotionally involved.

I'm sorry but I think it's just drama to make you cry. I'd google suicides in the state newspaper, but beyond that, I think it's a trick.

Well, all I can tell you is it's just too many 'incredibles' in one story.

-shot himself
-cousin knew his password
-cousin wants to know if he was depressed so asks YOU when HE lives upstairs from him.
-ex was known to have done this sort of thing in the past (tricks).
-others who knew him also tend to disbelieve story

If it smells like crap, it usually is.

As to your question, "Do ppl play dirty tricks like this?"
Unfortunately yes, fortunately, most do not. You were just unlucky I'm afraid.

Simple answer....

File an AR on TOS violation - accessing another resident's account- with a transcript or chat log, including the fact that the account holder is "deceased".

If the account is still active in a week, you've been had.
I'm betting on a "WTF why did you try to have my account closed" message in 3 days.

Another little bit of ancient SL history:

/140/78/70319/1.html

This was a really big deal at the time and many people never forgave him.

Cliff notes version: Billy created a video tribute to Jeska Linden that was a little....stalkerish. When Billy visited LL headquarters Jeska wouldn't (wisely) let him near her. To get even, Billy planted a fake rumor that he had taken his own life in RL over the whole thing. It was very, very ugly.

the cousin was probably not the cousin, but the guy himself... and he sounds freakishly demented. stay away and don't give a rats ass what he does.... and next time he contacts you, applaud the brave move on the psychos part for sparing the rest of the world his nightmare and taking his life.

yeah, i'm intolerant. deal with it.

His cousin told me that "bob" shot himself, and they'd found a bottle of Jim Beam with him, too.
Names changed to protect the crazy.

Yes, people do things like this. For whatever reason they have, like someone mentioned, to disappear, to hurt you or any number of reasons. It happens.

Fake suicides on the internet are as old as IRC and chat rooms.

I imagine they must come close to outnumbering real suicides of people you know online.

I would think he would have come to you with condolences and shared sense of loss rather than questions about mood, at least in the immediate aftermath. Only you know if the progression seemed plausible or not.

Imagine for a non-SL'r not knowing how things in SL work - he would have

-Logged In

-Told you his RL name (at least first name) and he was cousin to X person, he would have used the RL first name not the SL name.

-Told you where to send your condolences / flowers .. And since he wouldn't know how well you knew him probably even told you when the showing was.

-Not interrogated you, not so soon. Maybe in a later conversation. But not while in shock/grief. He lived in the same house after all, he'd be shaken for sure.

But Its possible it is legitimate. Hard to know if you don't know his name.
