I think there should be RL ramifications if someone purposely destroys someone else's inventory, avatar etc (permanently). At the very least that is destruction of property. People invest a lot of REAL dollars in their game. I just think it's kinda crazy when someone destroys someone else's stuff because they're angry. At least this woman had a real life beef, though, I'll say that. The people who have an 'in game problem' and hack somebody are more than a bit detached from reality. i agree she should pay any damages and costs for the avatar and inventory and if there was a business generating money from it a certain amount of loss there as well.. but giving someone access to your account and they go in one day and destroy the account is not hacking. they did not have to hack the system to gain entry.. i think what is happening is people have more access to computers than back when a hack was first defined as a hack.. we are seeing the definition change and thats fine as long as they don't go giving the same sentence for someone hacking into the white house with well planned premeditation using their coding experience vs someone given access to a virtual world account going through some drama. the media never tells you the minimum sentence they could get because minimum doesn't draw attention.. this being in Tokyo who knows what is gonna happen.. if it were the U.S. as crazy as our country is she would end up with child support or alimony or some stupid thing like that lol _____________________

Do we know for sure, though, that he *gave* her his password? If he did, then no, she didn't hack...perhaps she used without his permission. Loaning someone a key does not give them an okay to use it any time.
It's also possible she installed a password trap on his computer, got the password, got into his SL and had a field day. It does seem clear she owes at least monetary damages, though. |

LOL Maple Story!!! But seriously: She HACKED his account (didnt sound like he gave her access). That's why she's been arrested - you left out that part. The why is for her therapist to handle lol. Maple Story. That's like saying she hacked him on Habbo... I don't know. Japan's big about virtual stuff. They might not have specific rules governing it, but they'll throw the book at people who do it. They'll even FIND things to charge a person with to nail them. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4165880.stm is a prim example. Shortened version: Guy in Japan created bots that killed other players in an MMORPG called Lineage 2. At the time, a player who was killed had a high chance to drop an item (worn or not) from their inventory for the 'winner.' Sometimes these items were price in the millions of the in game currency or took a lot of work to create. He would then sell the items at an auction site. So, I think NC caught the guy and pressed charges.. but this came out after I had left the game due to the whole "dropping items to griefing PvPers who wouldn't drop a thing if defeated." Basically, they couldn't get him for the 'real' crime of breaking a game developers ToS, so they got him for what amounts to hacking. _____________________

I am all for it, Raud. The amount of *real* time and *real* work and *real* money 'spent' on games and their products should be as respected as if the products or shops or lands were 3D, brick and mortar. It all comes down to real life expenditures. Sweat, time, or money, which all are kind of the same thing anyway.
Online harassment should be taken more seriously too, since it can and does cause real-life misery and harm. Even if 'only' emotionally speaking. Having someone behave psychotically toward you, stalking etc., is frightening no matter what method - internet or 3d reality. The laws on ALL of these things are way behind the times, in my opinion. |

Give it 5 years or so and no one will notice stories like this anymore than they notice a routine mugging now.

Nah. The internet is just a passing fad. It'll never catch on. Next you are going to tell me that people will want little telephones that they can take with them everywhere they go, and annoy others by talking real loud in them about trivial things. |

LOL Brenda.
Ceka I agree if he gave it to her that's not hacking, but it is misuse. Dunno if misuse is illegal or not. The actions she took while misusing it are, I think. Sort of like entering someone's real home and trashing their stuff, even if they did loan a key. |
