Just in case it doesn't get highlighted:

The woman is actually being held on "suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data," even though it's clear what the actual implications are.

I was amused when I read this, though. :D

Online divorcee jailed after killing virtual Husband.

By MARI YAMAGUCHI, Associated Press Writer Mari Yamaguchi, Associated Press Writer – Thu Oct 23, 3:48 pm ET

TOKYO – A 43-year-old Japanese woman whose sudden divorce in a virtual game world made her so angry that she killed her online husband's digital persona has been arrested on suspicion of hacking, police said Thursday.

The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The woman had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.

She has not yet been formally charged, but if convicted could face a prison term of up to five years or a fine up to $5,000.

Players in "Maple Story" raise and manipulate digital images called "avatars" that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting against monsters and other obstacles.

The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead.

The woman was arrested Wednesday and was taken across the country, traveling 620 miles from her home in southern Miyazaki to be detained in Sappporo, where the man lives, the official said.

The police official said he did not know if she was married in the real world.

In recent years, virtual lives have had consequences in the real world. In August, a woman was charged in Delaware with plotting the real-life abduction of a boyfriend she met through "Second Life," another virtual interactive world.

In Tokyo, police arrested a 16-year-old boy on charges of swindling virtual currency worth $360,000 in an interactive role playing game by manipulating another player's portfolio using a stolen ID and password.

Virtual games are popular in Japan, and "Second Life" has drawn a fair number of Japanese participants. They rank third by nationality among users, after Americans and Brazilians.

So she's held for breaking into his account and messing up stuff which is, you know, kind of illegal regardless of whether it's a game or government databases. Of course she got arrested.

All the rest is sensationalist fluff put together by people who were having a slow news day. The reason behind killing the damn pixels is not a legal matter and in this case it's not even that interesting a story.

Probably more directly related to our SL lives is that one European country is prosecuting two boys for on-line theft when they finagled another player in an on-line game to give them two items. Man, could they ever go over budget if they lock onto some of the SL scams...

If he *gave* her the password, surely this can't succeed

I doubt she is going to get a maximum sentence for hacking since more than likely he gave her the password and log in info..
you never know though..they could make an example out of her..

either way it just shows you can't trust anyone with that information..

Indeed the article makes it sound like he gave her access to the account. In that case it sounds like destruction of property or something, not hacking. If I give someone permission to edit my objects and they end up deleting my property, I'll search up the results of this case :D

Another rumor control on that one:
They threatened him with a knife and kicked him in real life, so the only weird thing in that case is how it is considered theft and not robbery or assault.

LOL Maple Story!!!

But seriously: She HACKED his account (didnt sound like he gave her access). That's why she's been arrested - you left out that part. The why is for her therapist to handle lol.

Maple Story. That's like saying she hacked him on Habbo...

Well I went and signed up for Maple Story. I got caught up in how cute everything looked, and then i found the wedding link and *swoon* quickly the thoughts of dragging nina to Maple Story for a wedding there was on my mind! But then I ran across the "Cash Shop", and several references to buying this and buying that and paying for appearance stuff and i felt *drained*. I guess you kind of have to adventure too. I would love to explore but combat is rather bleh.

I think there should be RL ramifications if someone purposely destroys someone else's inventory, avatar etc (permanently). At the very least that is destruction of property. People invest a lot of REAL dollars in their game.

I just think it's kinda crazy when someone destroys someone else's stuff because they're angry. At least this woman had a real life beef, though, I'll say that. The people who have an 'in game problem' and hack somebody are more than a bit detached from reality.
