Hello all,

Yesterday, i was travelling searching for lands in sale in Dreamland and i found some nice group of islands, when suddenly while i was flying appeared the typical message of some Orb security device: "This is a restricted land, you have 6.00000000 seconds to leave this land or you will be exterminated".

I tried to fly out of the property but was big and before leave it i received a ban.
3 seconds later appeared a couple (man and woman) flying and the man shouted me: who are you? why you are here? what do you want?

I don't understand what's the problem with the people. I understand if you want privacy, but this is paranoid. Those guys were watching every move inside their land, thats why they appeared in 3 seconds.

Well, my question is: there's any real reason to be paranoid in SL? if i have a house, the robbers can enter and steal your furniture or jewels? the unique reason that i know is when you dont want people using your stuff, but i think that with a basic security system is enough.

Probably would be a good business creating devices for paranoid avis. I saw once an ED-209 in SLX (the huge robot in the first movie of Robocop). If that's the case i want my own Terminator to protect my shop ("hasta la vista baby";).

Maybe they were just paranoid but maybe they have had someone causing them major hassles and they thought you were the same person.

OR maybe they have a broken trace of a former LM throwing people at them all the time (very annoying from my personal experience).

Still, somewhat stunted social skills in the way of handling it.

Some people may think you are spying on them with disable camera contraints and have had prying eyes focused on their private world. been griefed or heaved upon with drama in the past. So this would not necessarily be paranoia in SL.

SL just might be the last bastion of the sick imagination. The whole thing is designed with peeping Toms in mind.

Just because they're paranoid doesn't mean you weren't watching them.

Yeah sure, i dont say that they must allow visits of all strange people.

Just i say why that reaction? the security device told me to leave the land, but also i was banned and also i was chased by the owners, when the unique thing that i did was fly over the land. Probably they have a bad experience with griefers.

I remember that the last time that some griefer attacked me was when i was in a public land and this guy started to use some device to control my movements.

Instead of use my orb gun i just said him: hey, stop, dont that. And voila!!! he stopped and left the land.

Gotta watch out over the bedroom communities. They crank up the orbs. Prevents those ugly ban lines.

I can say its a really weird feeling when your with someone either intimately or just building together and hanging out to have someone hovering over your head.. 2's company and all that ;)

That said, I do agree there are politer ways to deal with things.. though I would be loathe to judge them just in case they have had a history of being griefed and thought you were someone coming in for another go..

I don't get the parnoia either really. Yes in over 2 yrs, i have been greifed, spyed on etc. But i have found most of the people are just explorers. I get countless IM's on i had an "inturder" while i was gone. I alway want to ask.. did they not flush the toilet?? Drink your beer?? Then the ever popular.. someone "scared me" Scared?? of what?? This is a Cyberworld.. see that X at the top of your screen.. click that problem solved. Then there is the "naked" parnoia. Wow seen your naked pixel butt did they? Meanwhile the skin u bought is up there for god and everyone to see naked as a new borne babe in the shoppe you purchaesd it from. I really just don't undestand it.. so many need to do some serious rl/sl seperation.

some people react differently to the same situations. keep in mind there are avas out there whose sole purpose is to grief and grief again, so maybe the couple in question was goin thru that, or you get those avas who show up, and you greet them, and they don't even acknowledge your presence, yet will get naked and proceed to do as they please. it is a bit creepy to suddenly look out your window and see an ava floating there, sayin nothing, but has his prim penor out, while you are changin clothes, some get over it, some erect banlines.

until we fully know why the couple reacted the way they did, i wouldnt call em paranoid.

I don't think they are paranoid, but I do think they were overreacting a tad. I lock my doors and if I am bothered by someone while on my land, I give them the eject and banning. I see no need to take it further than that. Well, except for when I'm in a really bad mood and need a laugh.. then the first griefer gets a taste of my prim skirts.

But that's the extent that I go. I also can't say that I have any social skills..

I think SecondLife being a microcosm of Real Life you are simply going to meet all sorts here.

In RL we are largely insulated from each other till we have a reason to communicate. We will gravitate towards those of similar background, disposition, views maybe.

In SL we are all thrown into the melting pot. Race, lifestyle, attitudes, gender are all unprefaced except from what you might glean from profiles. We are, without warning, facing someone from the other side of the planet. It might seem they are from *another* planet .. might look it too! ... but a lot of people can't see that and assume we're all of the same attitude. That's my take on it anyway.

We *can* get on with each other but we need to respect the other's wishes. It isn't compulsory :D

and yes, they may have just been griefed to Hell and back!

To me its suprising how some people react to being on their land. Its as if the concept of exploring is totaly alien to them. If everyone followed their line of thinking id be afraid to leave the welcoming area because I really dont want to upset anyone but using common sense I usualy dont fear commiting a mortal sin by walking around sims and looking for interesting things.

When my first had property in SL (rented) the 2nd day I had it, some stranger tp'd in (dunno how) and started shooting me and the place with a paintball gun. I had the door set to only allow me..yet he got in anyway. No one was on who could help me.

The next place I lived, even though I had the house locked, all day every day there were strangers constantly trying to get into my house, and if they did, they'd be all over my furniture, trying to steal what they could, using the rest. They also dumped things all over my property.

The next place I lived, I allowed people to come on the property, but I had a security orb that just pushed them back onto the adjoining land. Someone used camera angles to control my furniture, and turned a nice cuddle and conversation into a sex session and we couldn't turn off the couch. it was not fun, it was violating.

The next land I owned, I logged in one day to find it full of bright pink and green "jacks" prims all over it.

I haven't met a "kind" explorer on any of my properties who was "just looking around" It's ALWAYS been a greifer.

So now, I have ban lines up. They are ugly, but after a year of griefing by strangers for no reason (I'm a human AV, not that great looking, and I keep to myself) I have no tolerance for anyone. If you stand on the edge of my property for too long, I"ll ask you what you want, who you are, and why you're there. It's my right.

You wanna explore and make friends? IM me, make friends with me, ask me to show you around...and I probably would. Otherwise, too many people have jilted me so that it's guilty until proven innocent. I hate being this way, but being the slightest bit nice allows one to be stomped upon by those who don't care about anything but themselves.

It probably wasn't you. They probably have been griefed to the point of aggrivation also.

That's a very sad case. I remember that only once a griefer annoyed me a lot shooting me with and orb gun, but after that i learned that i must need be prepared, that's why i have a nice pack of dissuasive guns :) But until now i only needed to use them just once.

Maybe is my short time in SL, but i dont have so much cases of griefers. Anyway, it's sad that your experience in SL that is suppose must be good and positive changed and now you need more protection that in RL.

This is really, really sad. Some of my best, longest lasting friends in-world were met when one or the other of us was exploring. I fear times have changed. :(

Even though I've been caged, shot, orbited, and verbally abused by griefers at home in the past I certainly don't shout at them. Don't need to. Security orb, eject, ban, are all I need now. Any innocent passers by have time to have a quick look at my home and then time to leave.

Imho these people treated the OP rudely, whatever their history with griefers is.

Times aren't really changing, Qie.

I still have my property open to all. I do lock the doors to my house, but we know how much that stops people *smirks* The security orb in my workshop in the sky functions so it only extends to the walls +/- a few meters maybe, with a 20sec delay. So if they get booted by my orb, they were deffinately going into a place that is designed so anyone short of a brainless griefer can tell it's meant to be private.

On the ground, I meet a lot of new Residents. I'm not sure why, as there's really nothing in the surrounding sims to attract them *Shrugs*, but I put out a newbie gift pack of mine with a few notecards and helpful hints and LMs. If I'm there, I'll answer questions. I do meet the occational idiot, but most are very nice...just very new.

I still think fondly of a girl I met when she was so new she squeaked. Wanted to build a demonic avatar but there is that L$ thing at the start. She was estatic when I built her a set of horns in a few minutes (nothing fancy, cut, twisted, tapered torus with shiney. Not even any textures, just colors). Well, I met up with her about a year later. She was STILL wearing those horns I gave her ^.^ Gave me a warm fuzzy.

Like a lot of things in RL, I think people in SL focus on the bad, and overlook the good. That old adage "One rotten appel spoils the bunch." is sooooooo true. At least with our perceptions. The reality is that if you pick up that rotten apple and toss it out, then the rest of the bunch is perfectly fine.

Why people over-react is never going to be explained. They may have had their reasons (some examples stated in previous posts), or they may just be world class buttheads. The world may never know *grins*.

Just pick yourself up, dust off the pixel booted-dust, toss that "bad apple" experiance in the trash where it belongs, and go enjoy a juicey red delicious somewhere else in SL. Or give a few to Ann and she'll prolly bake you a nice hot apple pie =^.^=

I don't understand the paranoia. Occasionally if I'm busy building stuff I take myself off to my sky platform where I'm unlikely to get disturbed, although the disturbances I get are mostly from well-intentioned and curious people. Other than that I normally stop and chat. Anyone can wander round my house, especially the new one as I'm quite proud of it.

(Sorry for the long post . . .)

You folks should be careful posting these opinions. I've puzzled before in these forums about this topic and had strong reactions that my "exploration" is nothing more than an intrusion, that I am just a peeping tom and a griefer.

Well I'm not going to stop looking for new, interesting places in SL just because someone has been griefed in the past. As to being a peeping tom? If I needed that, couldn't I just rez a couple of my own avatars and have at it? Do people actually think I'm going to see anything more than a bunch of vague gray shapes in the 10 seconds it takes me to fly by, even if I was trying? It takes far longer than that for textures to rez. Do they really think they are THAT interesting that I would go to the trouble?

I much prefer security orbs to ban lines though, and I would encourage their use for those so inclined. However, I have just recently stumbled into one orb that gave me 10 seconds to get off the land. Well -- I don't really know which direction is the quickest way off and with severe lag sometimes I can't take 3 steps in 10 seconds. It didn't just eject me, it orbited me -- I mean 8000 meters in an instant. It may have banned me too.

Now this is a cyber world. No harm was done to me whatsoever in the incident. So if it makes people feel more at ease to block out even the cartoon virtual people in world, I wouldn't let my opinions or lifestyle stop them. It is their world, their imagination too. And if they're that troubled, I don't really want to be a part of their world anyway.

But I WILL continue to explore -- and without the quotation marks.
