From: SuezanneC Baskerville It appears that after they take your avatar data they show you the 3D files that would be used in the 3D printer and don't bill you and produce it unless you approve. I wonder what the preview files look like?
Some of the models in the gallery look ok to me.
Maestrom said "Various companies now offer to replicate your avvy in 3d."
No one has mentioned any source other than the one I mentioned.
There aren't any other companies offering this service, are there? Had a look around and couldn't find any other. Although I wouldn't pay for what they're offering I must admit I couldn't do any better myself... Sorry Maelstrom, I guess your out of luck - no one has had one done for themselves yet or maybe they simply do not care to admit it. At a lower price, perhaps I would think about getting one - just for fun.

I have pondered creating a clay sculpture myself...I am quite good at sculpturing (in RL! my prim work isn't that good). It's just painting it that bothers me. I can draw and paint but only on paper, not on anything in 3D.

How much would they charge to capture the spiny maelstrom pony tail though I wonder and I bet the price would rise phenomeally if I kitted up in my space suit

Cheapest way would be to create an alt in your image and stand it in the corner.

I've heard they're mega-pricey. I wouldn't do it because Oryx changes clothes every day and i would hate to have to choose one to represent her for all eternity.

How about something like this? I suppose you could get one of these and put on some new clothes. It's a porn star figure by a company called plastic fantasy. Don't know if they're still around.

After several minutes of googling I found that it's a 7 and 1/2 inches tall. I suppose you could just get a barbie.

So could SL lead to even more new words and phrases? Meta-narcissism or virtual narcissism, perhaps.

Owning a 3d version of your AV (in other formats) would be pretty cool. This way, if you are creating any ads, paintings, or pictures, you could use your 'high rez' version as the model...that would be handy. Instead of having to do a ton of PS post production, you could create some great Fx, lighting, and shadowing within a 3d app of your choice.
Also...other people may find it cool to just have...many people collect items like they are going out of style...having your AV as a .obj (or what have you) might be another great addition.
Also, if you are familiar with skinning and rigging...you can use your AV to make an animation outside of the SL engine.
Of course...I could be completely misunderstanding what '3d AV' might mean...are they creating this AV to be imported only into the SL engine? Or are they creating the AV in another app like Max or Maya?

It would be a good place to put the First Bling that I imagine has been flying off the shelves.

Heck...you could even start a business selling the more popular characters in SL...that is, after you got permission from each person.

From: Conan Godwin I want a figure of Trout's avater and Anshe Chungs avatar so I can make them makeout I've been working on her for ages. She won't return my calls. I just don't think she's up for making out with me, so this may be the only way. Digital Baseball cards would be sort of fun. I don't know whym, other than I have a ridiculously oversized box of baseball cards in my closet and trading SL cards would be sort of goofy and fun for about 10 minutes. I don't know about an actual 3d model of Trout, though. I'd do it under one condition - it has to be about 30 feet tall, and I want to be wearing some silly uniform and brandishing a saber. When the revolution comes, I want hundreds of people with pitchforks and torches to tear it down and beat it with their shoes. Then I want the pieces sold on eBay. At some point, the head has to end up in a hotel room in Vegas, where myself and 4 armed friends will break in and steal it, thus resulting in a huge trial that will make me famous forever. Edit - and I want it to be a bobble-head sculpture.
