Cool, we can all return to living in mud huts and paying homage to the strong man who leads the village. Of course we will have to face times of famine and all those "women's rights" will have to go by the wayside. Of course with life spans falling to the late 30s we won't have to live as long under the conditions.

Capitalism is the best thing that ever happened to the human race.

Yes of course it is. I mean people cant eat or feed their families, cant afford healthcare , basic education and live in stinking shit filled slums where they whore their own children and eat rotten food from rubbish dumps. 80% of the worlds population live on less than $10US a day and more than 10 percent live on less than $1US a day but as long as you can afford a nice new plasma and a new pair of nikes then its all good. :)

Probably you can even afford a computer fast enough to run SL, and a broadband connection?

Don't get your thong all in a bunch, Vulva. I'm sure over-sized prim boobs and silicone breast implants will still be available even after we're all forced to eat out of trash cans.

.....

I think also that sometimes the focus on newbies is misplaced in that many owners dont look beyond the new newbie (of whom there are zillions) when trying to grow their businesses. I think the most important new person to SL is the person who after a few days/weeks of exploring and trying it out, have decided to make a committment to their new-found joy and put their own money into it. If only because when they do theyre buying.

I totally agree! Comes down to LL conversion rates....invite 100 people in and hope 10 will stay.

I don't see anything in the BlueMars info that would indicate it's going to be any more controlled than SL other than some "cities" will be pay to play and some won't. Content will be whatever the creators decide it should be. EDIT: I'll also add that if their website is any indication of quality, they're in trouble already. Borked. Missing links. Etc.

Really what's driving the freebie culture is the accumulation of things people have made and set free into the wild. Pixels are unlimited. Unlike that real world clothing store you mentioned, it costs me no more to "make" 1000 articles of clothing as it does to make the first one. So there's no good parallel with a RL economy except software to a certain degree.

But really, how many people want to spend $5 US (say $1250L) over and over on pixel outfits for their pixel barbies and kens?? A LOT of people are just here for the chat and other stuff that has little to do with what they look like. My stuff generally sells at "afterthought" prices. Like hmmm -- that's cute -- it's cheap -- I'll take a shot on it. :) (And yes I put a lot of work into them but it's a labor of fun, not profit.)

I wouldn't place much store on a few borked links on a Website....Second Life has been borked ever since it was launched. On any given day you can experience some sort of difficulties on the grid......even if it's just waiting 5 mins for all the grey matter to rez. We put up with it because overall we like/love the game.....so our patience is on a different level than say that of a RL business entering this 3D enviroment.

It really depends on what your goals are in SL......if it's just wanting to tootle around create a few things....set it for sale and hope those sales covers the tiers on your land...then this thread is pretty meaningless to you. To some that means being "Successful"....as you're enjoying a quality SL life at no further outside cost. For others success might mean running a business or businesses and garnering almost a RL income from it. Someone like the owner of Fantasyland who purchased 800 sims from LL after investing a couple hundred thousand USD....it becomes big private business. We all play on different levels.

i see no problem with this, personally.

i still buy more expensive items with some frequency if i'm confident the quality is there. or items made by a fairly unknown that is unique and interests me.

extremely cheap items, like mentioned will tend to have me buying them often out of curiosity. and i'm often pleasantly surprised.

i know many content creators in world who are selling stuff just fine. all of them make fairly unique, interesting items, however. so i'd imagine they might do better than another person making fairly lookalike jeans, shoes, another mustang or lamborghini derived car, etc, etc..

(I was sent that email, but i didn't reply to it.)

Nothing to worry about....let's resume flooding the grid with more freebies! :p

Price cops? Someone can't sell something at 10-25L ??? Perhaps Obama should take over XStreet too? I just don't get what you're driving at.

What does Obama have to do with XStreet? At least he is trying to find solutions to the mess we are in with the economy that he INHERITED!

You said "than L$10 if that's what he decides his time is worth"....there lies the problem initally that time was worth 1000 L to that same person......by the time the SL door was being slammed it became 10 L

So what? People aren't allowed to change their minds? I sell a boat for $2200. It's not selling well, so soon I'm going to lower the price, likely to around $1500. If it still doesn't sell well, I'll cut the price more. That's about a 30% drop in one day. Holy smoke, somebody call the SEC on me, there must be something funny going on.

The boat cost me NOTHING to make, zero, zilch, nada. I can sell it for a dollar if I want. I can sell it for L$10,000 if I want. I can do both on different days. What's the big deal? So you decided to build a boat too. Maybe you decided to build a boat before I had even thought about it. Again, so what? Because I came up with the idea to build and script a boat, that makes the livelihood of all other SL boatbuilders my responsibility? I don't think so. It's my property; I can use it however I please, within the TOS.

No, its legitmate alright just in the same way "Lava Inside" decided to swamp the market with all their "Free" products for 3 weeks before switching off SL. I have to say i felt rather sorry for those that are in the business of making Club and camping gadgets .....i guess in a few months time everything will be back to normal for them!

Poor them.
