upload your textures to your harddrive and then catalogue em using a media album...you can flick through all the textures in your album without needing to look through em all in sl...then just put the name of the one you want in your add textures box takes time to get em all to your hardrive though...

From: Skell Dagger Rha, if they're full-perm textures, don't put them in a prim. That takes ages. Notecard them You can write on the notecard what they are, and notecarding textures has added bonuses: you don't have to rez and unpack a whole prim (or dig through a prim's inventory) to find one or two textures, and with a notecard you only have to click to load the texture, then you can re-save it to inventory for use, and delete it when you're done. I always forget about this option with stuff. I had wanted to do this with many of my LM categories - the ones that I don't use constantly. I did do this with many of my pictures quite a while ago.

This still leaves all of them as individual inventory items though, and I think part of the goal is to reduce that number.

I found the inworld texture sorters to be of little use.

I'm so happy to see this thread - this has been driving me insane..... I'm almost certain it has to do with the number of textures, my friend who has only a few hundred has no problems. I have easily 3 or 4 thousand and I can order a pizza and have it delivered by the time my texture picker loads.

I tried the notecard thing, found it awkward
I like the way it works with the prims
(I build a cabinet and inside it has the prims that the textures are going into, which when clicked changes the texture of the prim to show the active texture, and after not being touched for a specific time, they default to my logo texture)
I like the system I built, but just not sure if there is a limit as to how many textures can go into the prims
not interested in uploading them to my hd, as most of them are textures I created myself and are already on the hd
just interested in cleaning out the clutter, by putting them into prims (not notecards, as mentioned I tried this and did not like it)
eventually I want to have the script give the active texture when the clicked on and held

I was just unpacking a bunch of boxes of textures to do some experiments based on inventory size - one of the boxes had 800 textures in it. It took a while to load the contents into the Open window and a few seconds to copy it all to inventory, but otherwise all seems fine with that amount.

The alt with roughly 10k inventory, but practically none of it textures, can open new inventory windows pretty quickly and gets the Texture selection window pretty fast for object editing. My second alt has practically no inventory - less than 1000 items to start with. I took his inventory up to roughly 10k with all of that addition being textures. A second inventory window opened just as quickly as before and even the Texture window popped up pretty quick. I then took that texture count up to roughly 20k and everything started slowing down a bit -- not horrid, but enough to notice the difference. My primary account has an inventory of probably around 50k or so, but probably less than 1-2k of that is textures. Yet when editing objects, it also takes forever to open that Texture selection window. I am guessing that the number of textures may play in the equation, but that total inventory size is actually a bigger factor.

I wonder what it is that makes the texture selection open so slow

A very interesting discovery. I logged in using a previous Nicholaz version (BE for 1.18.5.3) and without doing anything to my inventory, it popped up a second window almost instantly and it opened the texture window in edit almost instantly.

After crashing at least 25 times this morning and getting to a point where the project I was working on crashed my viewer anytime I tried to do anything with the texture picker or color picker, I finally uninstalled SL and installed the current RC. Still lagging when loading the texture picker but no longer crashing.
