Because you're a masochist?

Obviously, to some degree- aren't we all? We deal with SL :)
But I was referring to the wide range of personalities and manifestation of the human spirit. Thanks you for adding your self to my experience.

Yup. When people have better stuff than you, it motivates you take that stuff away from them and then you end up with more stuff. Perhaps not the most noble of uses, but that's what it's there for all the same.

I disagree. Jealousy does not motivate you to do anything, it just makes you bitter. It's -greed- what motivates you to take that stuff away from them. It is entirely possible (even more likely, in my experience) for people to be jealous without having the greed necessary to do anything about it beyond feeling sorry for themselves. Such peoples' lives revolve around others - what "they" have done to me, what "they" SHOULD be doing for me, etc.

The thing that amuses me the most about the whole emotion conversation is that Conan, who purports to make decisions without consulting his emotions, spends his life caring for another human being. (Presuming his post was truthful.)

I'm having trouble getting the logical and emotionless self-serving purpose this life choice fulfills for him.

I tend to stick with my little mantra "My actions are my only true belongings." I'm sure Conan will now come back and fill posts after post telling us all how emotionless and self-serving this essentially compassionate act is.

Me, I'll judge the action...

I consider her an investment as she will hopefully provide me with an heir.

Precisely my point. Loyalty is the logical choice also, regardless of emotional attachment as one will no doubt have invested significant time, energy and resources in the family unit which would be wasted were one to switch allegiance.

I had a feeling you would say this. I agree with you. And, really, my family members are more logical than most people - but I still feel a bit safer knowing that they love me and value my love for them. :D

And As for caring for me when I get old; if I ever got to the stage where I cannot support myself and be of use to society I will take my own life (and that is the only set of circumstances where I would) - not out of despair but out of the simple logic that if I am not useful, then my time is up.
I don't want to be a burden on anyone either but I'm pretty confident that my love for them and their love for me will be something worthwhile in their lives even when I'm not good for much else.

I disagree. Greed motivates you to acquire new stuff - but only jealousy motivates you to deprive others of it. Jealousy implies that not only do want something someone else has, but you also begrudge them having it aswell. If one were simply greedy, one would be content for one's enemies to have stuff, just so long as one had the same stuff too. Keeping in mind that life is a competition with others (FACT) - be it other tribes who have more goats than you or other countries who have more oil than you - jealousy and greed combined ensure that you always strive to be at the top of the heap; and so long as you have more than your enemies have, all is well.

Or maybe you actually have just the right amount of emotion, which because it is not too much emotion feels to you like no emotion.

Finding someone who shares the same views on how much, or how little, emotions should play a role in a relationship is the difficult part. I've learnt over the years that I am much more emotional then I thought. I just held it all in.

Angry? Leave.
Sad? Pretend it doesn't matter.
Scared? Don't tell anyone.
Bursting with joy? OK, that one was easy. Laugh.

I am much 'softer' now. Less embarrassed to show my emotions. I still laugh way too much during the most inappropriate times...

That's a matter of personal choice. At no point in the whole discussion have I told anyone else what they should be doing (except the bit about not wanting to hear people talk about their emotions - but the emphasis there is on me not wanting to hear it.) This whole discussion began when I mentionned that in my younger days I took a pragmatic approach to looking for sex that didn't involve wasting time getting to know girls. I've never suggested others should do the same (I think they should, but I've never actually said so).

Oh right... being the dispassionate judge that you are, you considered carefully and decided that your best choice for the genetic code of your heir is a person so depressed she can't get out of bed.

A temporary set back. Besides - I didn't say my conclusions were correct; merely that I followed a logical process to arrive at them.

No, because greed realizes that stuff is in limited supply, and often the only (or the easiest) way to obtain more stuff is to deprive others of it.

True. I should perhaps have used a hypothetical where stuff is abundant. I mean't to distinguish greed from jealousy - as jealousy compels one to begrudge others having stuff even if that stuff were in infinite supply.

An Outladish Knight - An attempt to inject levity back into the thread...
04-21-2008 16:19
An outlandish knight came from the northlands;
And he came wooing to me;
He said he would take me to foreign lands
And he would marry me.

Go fetch me some of your father's gold,
And some of your mother's fee,
And two of the best nags from out of the stable,
Where there stand thirty and three.

She mounted upon her milkwhite steed,
And he on his dapple grey;
They rode till they came unto the seaside,
Three hours before it was day.

Light off, light on, thy milkwhite steed;
Deliver it up unto me;
For six pretty maidens I have drown'd here,
And thou the seventh shall be.

Doff off, doff off thy silken things,
Deliver them up unto me;
I think that they look too rich and too gay
To rot all in the salt sea.

If I must doff off my silken things,
Pray turn thy back unto me;
For it is not fitting that such a ruffian
A naked woman should see.

And cut thou away the brimbles so sharp,
The brimbles from off the brim
That they may not tangle my curly locks,
Nor scratch my lilywhite skin.

He turned around his back to her
And bent down over the brim.
She caught him around the middle so small
And bundled him into the stream.

He dropped high, he dropped low,
Until he came to the side;
Catch hold of my hand, my fair pretty maid,
And thee I will make my bride.

Lie there, lie there, you false-hearted man,
Lie there instead of me,
For six pretty maidens hast thou a-drowned here
The seventh hath drown-ed thee.

She mounted on her milkwhite steed,
And led the dapple-grey;
She rode till she came to her father's house,
Three hours before it was day.

The parrot hung in the window so high,
And heard what the lady did say;
What ails thee, what ails thee, my pretty lady,
You've tarried so long away?

The king was up in his bed-room so high,
And heard what the parrot did say:
What ails thee, what ails thee, my pretty Polly,
You prattle so long before today?

It's no laughing matter, the parrot did say,
That loudly I call unto thee;
For the cat has a-got in the window so high,
I fear that she will have me.

Well turn-ed, well turned, my pretty Polly;
Well turned, well turn-ed for me;
Thy cage shall be made of the glittering gold,
And the door of the best ivory.

Wiki isn't a trademark; Wikipedia® is. Wiki, apparently, is Hawaiian for "quickly". I don't know if that's true, but that's what Jimbo Wales claims.

Wikipedia® and Jimbo Wales® are trademarks of some dude or other who thinks articles about Jedi® and Sonic the Hedgehog® are important elements of man's accumulated knowledge.

Jedi® is a registered trademark to some other dude.

Sonic the Hedgehog® is a registered trademark of some Japanese furries.

I respect your choices and your logic. I'm sorry if I've seemed otherwise. I actually think that too much emotion is often more of a problem than too little. Each of us probably has some more ore less "right amount" which for many of us probably changes as time goes on. I'll accept that for you none is best.
