Its Friday so I thought Id follow up my failure to get the identity of the mystery man because that one short post in this thread was not really sufficient to guess it by setting a question: Great American Shakespearean Actor - a contradiction?

My 5c worth is that in Much Ado About Nothing Thomas underplayed as usual Keaton overacted wildly as usual and Reeves acted as woodenly as usual. All of them got lukewarm reviews at best which is not surprising considering the comparative quality of the British members of the cast.

I cant comment on Barrymore but I seem to remember a couple of brave attempts at Othello and also remember that Patrick Stewart is English

edited because I said Thomas not Leonard

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BORING!?

Obviously, YOU have not seen Michael Keaton in Much Ado About Nothing!

/sulks

Or Kenneth Branagh in Henry V - one of my top five movies. Great acting, great movie as well, better than the Sir Larry version, which was way, way too stagey. Best Saint Crispin day speech on tape or film IMO. And final battle scene done extremely well - watch it in surround sound just for the arrows overhead...

And he absolutely nails the surrender of the town scene, the threat, bluff and near collapse. If you haven't seen it, rent it or better yet, buy it.

It's the accent. American accents do not lend themselves to the meter, and inflections required of Shakespeare.

So...you have the over-arching statement that Americans can never be good Shakespearian actors.

Branagh and Thompson (I believe that is who you meant?) did a bang up job with Benedick and Beatrice. When they weren't on screen, the film lagged. But that was to be expected...they far outstripped the others in talent. :)

Haven't seen the Othello's. But I did enjoy both Hamlet, and Henry V. (Both Branagh productions)

Oh! Leonard!

I expected more from him...I was a huge fan of Dead Poet's Society.

Oh Cael, I am with you on Henry V. Kenneth Branagh was astonishingly good. That Saint Crispin Day speech was fabulous. I wanted to join his army!!

And the scenes between Henry and Catherine made me smile.

Oh yes...Leonard. Yes, I was disappointed with his performance, as I have liked his work in other films.

Branagh is now appearing on British TV as Wallander the most boring Scandinavian detective in the world. If you are feeling suicidal dont watch it. If you cant sleep then watch it.

edited to add that he would give Columbo a run for his money for the most boring nonScandinavian detective too

If Keaton had wanted a role model for a Shakespearean comic role he should have watched John McEnery as Mercutio in Zeffirellis Romeo and Juliet. I was told off by the weeping 15 year old girls sitting behind me for laughing so much at him because it was supposed to be a tragedy.

Honestly, a better movie than I expected. Danny Devito actually acted most of the movie. Still, I have to say KB was better than the kid. And he had a sword to wave...

On purpose? I mean, if he meant to be the most boring Scandinavian detective in the world, then he's still great. As to boring detectives, Jessica had to be the worst - only interesting to watch Murder She Wrote like Name That Tune - I can name the murderer in three minutes. OK, I can name the murderer in the opening credits.

'Course, she has fans and laughing at the wrong points can make them deadly. Which is what she was - the murdering Enterprise. Enterprise found a planet in every solar system, Jessica found a murderer at every stop. World would have been safer to lock HER up.

Maybe you should make another calendar with thread people posing as Shakespearean characters. On recent reading I can see lots of competition for the Romeo and Juliet page. Amaranthim and Damian, Elora and Ghosty, Maureen and Jerboa or even Skell and Daros. Brenda is a shoe in for Lady Macbeth though.
