I will get new. I am not skilled enough to use second hand if not set up correctly.

How get graphic card not part of computer?

ok, now I really am sounding wobbly.

You can also get Brand New Machines on ebay. I got my Dell Desktop there, brand new, sealed with all warranty cards. It might be worth looking into.

That excerpt sounds familliar, I believe I have read that book. I too love Stephen King and The Stand is possibly one of the best books I have ever read. You have to read the full version though because the shortened version is just rubbish imo.
I don't think abridged versions of books are ever a good idea. If it's worth reading it's worth reading the original.

Do you mean Nvidia with Vista? Because I used Nvidia graphic card for more than a year without much trouble. Granted my laptop melted, but I didn't crash every ten minutes in that year.

Wobbly under confusing computers. Cannot wrap head around this stuff. I do not know what a "seek time" is or means, for example.
Nvidia under Vista is what I was talking about, Nvidia under XP is much better bet generally.

Good thing is you don't have to understand seek time to find it quoted and pick the lowest number there :) It is the time it takes the drive to find where it needs to go on the disk btw when loading a piece of data and it is quoted as an average.

The hard disk numbers to look for are the seek times (lower the better) and the amount of cache ram they have (8mb, etc...)
Other than that an easy guide is if you are paying more for the same size for the same computer then it is likely to be a faster drive :)

Hope your wobbly time passes soon :)

Regarding the hard disk, the spin speed, such as 5400rpm or 7200rpm is another way to judge. Higher numbers are better.

Good point though I thought all laptop drives were 5400rpm due to the 2.5inch form factor? Obviously for desktop that is true though.

They've been getting faster recently. You can indeed buy a 7200rpm laptop drive.

Great, then Lexxi, a 7200rpm is definitely what I would be springing for if I could afford it. You would not believe what a difference to SL a faster hard drive can make.

*smiles* Sorry Mo, the trouble is that buying a new comp is a nightmare, the only real ways to get what you want and you expect is to either know someone who knows this stuff or take the time to learn it yourself and believe me the latter is not easy. However I have a confession, I really don't like to depend on things that are expensive without understanding enough to make a good choice when buying and I refuse to buy blindly, couple that with not having a resident geek handy for when I needed to buy my equipment I decided to tackle it myself. So far so good :)

I do not think Dell gives out those numbers, I guess. I do not see that on there.

I do not trust getting a computer that way for myself. Though I understand others have luck going that route.

Hi Lexxi, I am at Dell.com and I have chosen to customize the Vostro 1710 laptop, there seems to be several options available:

1) 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive [Included in Price]
2) 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive [add $40]
3) 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive [add $90]
4) 160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor [add $10]
Free Fall Protection: Detects free-fall events and takes action to prevent damage
5) 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor [add $90]
6) Dual Hard Drives, 640G (2x320) 5400RPM SATA HDD [add $435]
7) Dual Hard Drives, 320G (2x 160) 7200RPM HDD [add $85]

If you can afford option 5) then that would be the best option (no need to go dual drive), otherwise next best is option 4).

Good catch. This option is a no-brainer.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

No in fact though the Intel graphics aren't anywhere near as good as the Nvidia, they are perfectly usable if you turn down the settings. I didn't mean to rubbish your choice Amara I was just wanting to give you an explanation for the reason why your Dell did not go as fast as you expected is all.
