From: Treasure Ballinger I haven't muted anyone inworld either, but there, it's because I don't know how. I have been on SL for nearly 2 years and don't know where the mute button or box is for IMs. If I did, and also if it could be easily removed, I would do it, on occasion. Only because I am doing something, and being distracted by it. Hello Treasure. I had to just check because I'd forgotten, but to mute someone inworld there's a button on bottom right of their profile. Sometimes it's been known for people to hit that by mistake and accidentally mute instead of pay cash to another av. It's also easy to remove anyone again from your mute list, which is opened from the menu on the communicate button at bottom of screen. -- Aes

From: Treasure Ballinger I did know about the pie 'Mute' but was thinking more of IM where the avatar is not around you ... If you click on the avatar's name in the IM field (highlighted in purple before anything he or she says), it will open the profile box and the 'Mute' button is in the bottom right corner. The menu stuff I mentioned above can be used to add or remove avatar and object names later.

I don't have anyone on "Ignore". I use selfcontrol instead. Many times I write a reply, but delete instead of posting it.
I am old enough to realize that I can't "win someone over on my side" in a forum like this.
Besides, this forum is not so high on my priority list that I have time for fights. Sometimes I wonder how someone can claim they work in RL and SL, and still post here so much. I wish I had their energy!

No need for an Ignore button. I can do that on my own just fine.

I am far more likely to end up on the ignore list of other people than them on mine. I don't use the ignore button, I attempt self will instead. Works with some, not so much with others.

With time you get to know the participants with a, shall we say, lower signal to noise ratio. It's easy to jump over their postings just by scrolling down. No need to explicitly ignore anybody.

Ignore takes all of the fun out of it. Someone says something stupid then tell them that it was a stupid thing to say.

From: Brenda Connolly And then someone will complain about stupid responses to stupid statements........ And if it is certain people in the forum, a humorous multi-page argument ensues between them and certain other people in the forum and you get to sit back and watch it all unfold even thou you were the one that started it.

I haven't really felt the need to ignore anyone. There are a few posters that I skip past their topics but no one on ignore (yet).

The ignore feature reminds me not to waste my time typing a blistering reply that I won't send anyway. Then as mentioned above I get to read the quote if I choose.

I don't use the Ignore feature to keep from reading comments of idiots. I use the ignore feature to keep myself from contributing to the stupidity! I am simply of the mindset that if I can't post a response that doesn't set off World War III in a forum, then maybe it's better if I don't have the temptation to respond...

From: Argent Stonecutter It doesn't work like a proper killfile, you still see "so-and-so has posted something, but you're ignoring them". Plus it doesn't make a cool "plonk" sound. And there's no "Pie" option on the poll. Plonk ftw! But seriously, I don't use the ignore button. I have never had occasion to really need it here or anywhere else. Yes, people do get under my skin - very much so; but it's very rare for that feeling to last much longer than a few seconds after I've left the thread in question. It takes me longer to ignore than to dismiss.

From: Marianne Little Sometimes I wonder how someone can claim they work in RL and SL, and still post here so much. I wish I had their energy! I am in the fortunate position where I work from home on the same machines I use to negotiate SL so it isn't hard for me to juggle the two. Mind you, I haven't been very busy in RL or SL since New Year so I have been sloping around from one thread to another over the past few weeks: the variety of opinion and technical knowledge fascinates me to the point where these forums are becoming more absorbing than SL itself. From: Brenda Connolly "It's only a Forum. No one dies." The same thing could be said for disagreeable behaviour in-world, surely? I've murdered several avatars that piqued my joie de vivre in the past but the buggers insist on walking and talking afterwards. From: Tabliopa Underwood I dont ignore anyone. Im to nosey for that and I might miss out on the gossip =) My sentiments exactly. In fact I often tick the 'Show muted text' box and scan recent chat in-world just in case a muted avatar has said something interesting or even "Hi". For Treasure's benefit: the muted text is greyed out in chat so you can distinguish it very easily. This might work for IMs if you have them set to show in chat but I can't say for certain. From: Gabriele Graves I am far more likely to end up on the ignore list of other people than them on mine. Also one or two of my victims had the temerity to mute me. I stay muted while they get to walk around? Where's the justice in that? Even psychopathic mamma's boys have rights, you know. From: Paola Delpaso With time you get to know the participants with a, shall we say, lower signal to noise ratio. It's easy to jump over their postings just by scrolling down. No need to explicitly ignore anybody. From: Ralektra Breda I haven't really felt the need to ignore anyone. There are a few posters that I skip past their topics but no one on ignore (yet). I wish I had that much discrimination but I can't resist having a peak anyway. Aside from the possibility that I may be surprised by an unexpected insight or an unexpected flash of wit, interesting replies from other residents might be tucked away in the thread. From: Jesse Barnett Ignore takes all of the fun out of it. Someone says something stupid then tell them that it was a stupid thing to say. The essence of a good discussion. From: Jesse Barnett From: Brenda Connolly And then someone will complain about stupid responses to stupid statements ... And if it is certain people in the forum, a humorous multi-page argument ensues between them and certain other people in the forum and you get to sit back and watch it all unfold even thou you were the one that started it. What a mixer!? Brenda I can believe but I never would have figured you for having a streak of mischief like that, Jesse Barnett. From: 3Ring Binder it's best for ME because i have a big mouth and i cannot NOT make a remark when something is SCREAMING out for me to hit it with a stick! (insert maniacal laugh here) It occurs to me that a 'Kick Ass' button would be more useful to help people of challenged blood pressure deal with off-colour posts. The 'kicker' could add a permanent message right under the OP's post to the effect that 'So-and-so has kicked Whoever's skinny derrière for having the gall to post this bullshit'. The only way the OP could remove the indignity would be to delete the offending post completely. It would have to be a chargeable item of course: say 10 lindens, to avoid extraordinary abuse. From: Weston Graves The ignore feature reminds me not to waste my time typing a blistering reply that I won't send anyway. Then as mentioned above I get to read the quote if I choose. I often abandon posting my objections, usually because I have argued myself out of the trap of wasting my time on the ideas in an objectionable post. I don't consider the time spent drafting a reply wasted, however, because I have examined my opinion on the matter at least and regulated my blood pressure at the same time. From: Raudf Fox I am simply of the mindset that if I can't post a response that doesn't set off World War III in a forum, then maybe it's better if I don't have the temptation to respond... I believe Neville Chamberlain adopted that attitude but they still had to have WWII when he eventually came to his senses. From: Katheryne Helendale Yes, people do get under my skin - very much so; but it's very rare for that feeling to last much longer than a few seconds after I've left the thread in question. It takes me longer to ignore than to dismiss. I wish I had your self-control because I can seethe for days - often over remarks that were not even deliberately offensive. I guess that ought to teach me to weigh my own words more carefully.

From: Ephraim Kappler For Treasure's benefit: the muted text is greyed out in chat so you can distinguish it very easily. This might work for IMs if you have them set to show in chat but I can't say for certain. Thanks! I appreciate everything I learn on the forums. Yeah I know it's DUMB to have been inworld 2 years and not know how to use the Mute feature. I just never had a huge need. I'm pretty easygoing and don't make enemies easily. What about muting groups temporarily? I am finding when giving presentations, (in text) that's it's very distracting to have a group suddenly start chatting. (Mostly because I want to read what they're saying and plus it's getting mixed up with my presentation text). Is there a way to temporarily mute group chat?

From: Treasure Ballinger Yeah I know it's DUMB to have been inworld 2 years and not know how to use the Mute feature. It's just a matter of where your interest lies and I don't think there's anything dumb about it. I didn't know we had an 'Ignore' option on this forum, for instance, and I've been posting for a year or more. As for muting Groups, I don't think there is a way to do that although I very much wish there was. I stopped group memberships - including some really useful ones - because there were too many distracting IMs from idle members just looking for chat.

No, I never use an ignore option on a forum. I learned long ago to ignore most trolling posts and disagreeable individuals, and I dislike seeing other people's replies to the muted person, now out of context.
For the same reason, the only time I use Muting in-world is if an individual or object is flood-spamming the chat so badly that it amounts to a denial of service attack.
