I have just learned that we have an 'Ignore' button and, before anyone wastes their time telling me where it is, I am not interested in finding it. The purpose is obviously much the same as the in-world 'Mute' button. I find 'Mute' to be a very handy feature, which I use on a temporary basis to cut out avs who think it's a good idea to discuss their RL laundry arrangements/dining habits/bowel movements in open chat or spam the channel with a rigmarole of ASCII emotes rather than risk saying something of interest. I don't much care for individuals who insist on chatting to me in IM while I am standing in front of them either so ... Nevertheless I usually clear my Mute list at the end of a session because I have yet to meet anyone who deserves to be permanently muted in-world. I can't see 'Ignore' working like that, however: if I put another contributor on 'Ignore', I would have to keep them in that state because the thread is not going to be wiped when I log off. And would I still see their odious comments quoted in other posts? And why bother? Am I going to shrivel up and die at the sight of the name or the drivel they spout? And what if he or she actually says something of interest? Would I want to miss that? So I opened this poll because I was wondering if many contributors use 'Ignore'? And when is it necessary to use it, apart from cases of gross bad behaviour, that is?

I said 'NO' but only because there was not a 'NO, NOT YET' option.

I use it. Not often, but some posters just get under my skin/raise my blood pressure. My fingers itch to write scathing replies to their obviously ill-conceived and insane notions, even though my brain realizes the futility of the effort.
So, in those rare cases, I used Mute for my own peace of mind.

Why wouldn't you use it? It's your forum given right to ignore people you can't stand reading. I'm not one for pissing matches. I usually say what I need to say and move on. Very often though, I hold back quite a lot. That is when ignore comes in handy. Keeps me from being banned and losing my SL account.

I often feel exactly the same way, even as I find myself typing the reply, but no response is ever futile for the very reason that you have expressed your opinion. Also, I really appreciate the supportive responses of posters who might have disagreed with my views elsewhere, however strongly - and more than a few of those might have been on my 'Ignore' list if I had one. I would not like to miss that.

It doesn't work like a proper killfile, you still see "so-and-so has posted something, but you're ignoring them". Plus it doesn't make a cool "plonk" sound. And there's no "Pie" option on the poll.

I don't use an ignore feature - but *not* because I don't want to miss a thing. Life is way too short to read every single thread anyway. I just decide what to read and what to ignore. Simple. If someone's opinons are annoying me, it's always possible they -might- have something interesting to say another day. If they do it's a bonus; if they carry on being annoying it confirms the judgement. Either way it's not difficult to exercise choice of what to read and what to skip over. Can't say I really see the need to use an ignore unless someone was being really, REALLY offensive somehow, which doesn't generally seem to happen around here. I used to read several USENET newsgroups where flamewars can get seriously heated, and only ever felt the need to put a very few persistent foul language using trolls in the killfile because they were cross-posting several groups. So far I haven't ever muted anyone in SL inworld either, although I would do it if I had need to. -- Aes

I dont have anyone on my list, but I've always liked knowing I had it. It would be handy for people who came in and caused serious trouble, IMO.

I can't put myself in a position where I'm so far above someone that their words are completely invalid to me. That said, I may tune people out. But I don't use the ignore list here. And, I've only used mute inworld for repetitive noises and breaking communication in hope that a bit of peace can help tame the drama in a friendship. (>_<

I should apologise to you myself, Marianne, because, I can recall a pretty vehement post on the matter of child avs for which I would not have been surprised if you had subjected me to the personal purgatory of 'Ignore'. Then again, it occurs to me that you may not even have read the post in question. Ephraim Kappler roars laughing. At any rate, you have my sincerest apologies if you did and my undying respect for witholding the 'Ignore' option in that case: there are days when my generosity toward humanity is strained, to say the least, and the occasion of that post most certainly was one of those.

Right now, there is nobody on my Ignore list. I fully believe in using it, I just personally have found it to be non-effective since so many people use the "quote" feature and I wind up reading what was posted that I didn't want to see anyway, ad nauseum. My only other choice was do just learn to use Ignore in my own brain. Which I do all the time now. I've learned not to respond to those who are not worth my while. I may have no choice but to read their drivel, but I do have a choice as to whether or not I want to respond in kind. Oh and I've never used the mute feature at all. As my mom used to say: "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything".

No. There is one person that I would love to ignore, but I refuse to give him the satisfaction that I have done that

I know there's a text version of SL available, for example, but otherwise 'Mute' is just a question of right-click on the av in question and choose ... You guessed it ... 'Mute'. Otherwise, you can clean the list or remove an avatar by simply going to the menu at the top of your screen and choosing View > Mute List.

I did know about the pie 'Mute' but was thinking more of IM where the avatar is not around you. So I suppose then the View/Mute List would be the way to do that, an add option, I presume. Thanks.
