Hmm, there's nothing really helpful there, but thanks for pasting.

Come to think of it, I haven't even LOOKED at my calling cards in a while. I know I cleared them out a month or two ago.

What I'd like is a way to organize my calling cards and friends by color. Blue means friends I talk with a lot, green means someone I chat with on occasion, maybe a group member, red meaning business contacts/associates, and white being, "OMG, who ARE you people?!"

Hmm.. and make gold your partner. That works well for me.

Calling cards have their uses.. I just don't use them.

If it really was a bussinescard, I'd be able to put some logo on it, and add some text about office hours or whatever.
If it really was a bussinescard, I'd be able to include some kind of location or whatever.
If it really was a bussinescard, people would be able to pull it up and view it without starting an IM session or opening my profile.

If anything, callingcards could be merged with LM's, and made editable (to some degree) by the creator only, be given properties (link to the creators' profile, location(s), advert(s), etc.), allow for changing it's picture, set online notification of the card on/off, have copy/transfer permissions editable, you get the idea....

You can do almost all these things already...with your Profile. In fact, your Profile really IS your SL business card. Like a business card, it contains (or should contain) everything you want a new acquaintance to know about you.
- Logos: You can put a logo in your 2nd Life or First Life tabs, or in one of your Picks.
- Office hours: Put them in one of the text entry boxes.
- Location: Picks, again.
- People can pull up your profile through Search, or by clicking your av, or with a calling card (in fact, the calling card = the profile). They do not have to IM you.

Once you realize that a calling card is really just a way to access your profile, all your objections go away. Or so it seems to me, anyway.

To the OP: If calling cards are cluttering up your inventory, either sort 'em into folders (so that long, long, list doesn't open) or just delete them altogether. You won't have a backup if your friends list gets borked, though...

Why does it matter? If they are not on your Friends list, then the calling card will no longer show your online status (which you can stop showing prior to that anyway by just un-selecting the appropriate box for that person on your Friends list). The minute you un-Friend someone, the only things the card is good for is:
1) shows the date when it was originally received
2) makes it a little quicker to pull up your profile

Assuming you delete the cards from your inventory (which I never found to be a difficult or time-consuming task) then the card is only cluttering their inventory.

So, I guess I still don't get why LL should devote any resources to this when there are so many other things that really need fixing or changing.

I'm confused. I've looked in my inventory and seen the calling cards of former friends light up noting they were on-line. Did that change?

The difference being.. Everybody can see every part of your profile, while a callingcard could be a lot more specified, to place things that don't fit in your profile, that would make the profile too cluttered or bloated, or that you for some reason don't even want to be in your profile, but reserve for specific people only.

Calling cards could offer more features, I'd love to design my own card... I could even make it a business. :) But what is necessary beside that is knowing they exist. Apparently, very few people actually do, and I really would prefer the friendship request to mean 'people I really want to know the online status of wherever they are'.

So in my opinion, if it counts, the first things to do to calling cards would be to swap them with friendship offers in the pie menu, and add an option to the "will you accept the card" menu to "accept and reply with my own card". These little things would go a long way in making the card system more useful.

They may no longer be in your friends list, but you might still be in their list?

I don't think it works that way. I've never removed anyone, but I've had people remove me, and their name was taken off my list. Still have their calling card though.
